This story happened to me in 5th grade in August 2014 when I had to move from my old school to my new school which is Hill Creek Elementary. It was my first time switching to a new school which was a big obstacle for me since I didn’t know anyone there and I have to leave my old friends behind as well as the teachers. When my parents first told me about me going to a new school I started getting dizzy and butterflies in my stomach.
I thought that day would never come but it eventually came.
When I first arrived at my new school my hands started shaking I was so scared of meeting my new teacher and my new classmates I wanted to start walking back but my mom was there telling me I shouldn’t be scared and that it’s gonna be a fun new experience.
“MOM!” Do you think the new kids will like me?” I asked panicky.
My mom smiled as she responded by saying, “Yes I am sure you’re gonna like them and they’re gonna like you no need to worry everything’s gonna be alright!”
I hugged her and said “Thank you!” as I headed on
There was 10 minutes before the bell would ring and I started getting nervous because I didn’t know where my classroom was. Not until 5 minutes before the bell would ring I found my classroom. Everyone was outside lined up in a single file line as I was still clueless about the whole school about where people go and eat at lunch where the playground was.
After everyone went inside the classroom the teacher told us that we can sit wherever we wanted to because he didn’t have a seating chart made. Everyone in the whole class seemed to be talking to each other like they were best friends while I was sitting there and thinking about my old school about my friends and teachers. Suddenly my eyes started getting teary from thinking about my past and at that moment it was the loneliest I’ve ever felt in my life. When recess time came everyone was playing with each other from all different classes while I got a ball and went to play basketball with myself. The whole school day I didn’t talk to anyone because I felt anxious and felt like I didn’t fit in. So once the final bell rang I felt so happy to get out of school it was like a feeling of a summer vacation, no homework, carefree.
When I got into my moms car she looked at my happily from seeing a smile on my face.
“So how did the first day go?” She asked me.
“It went very well!” I said knowing well it was a lie
The whole ride home I was lying about my school experience just so my mom would be happy knowing that I am doing good. When it was the next day I knew where I need to go so I wasn’t as clueless as I was on the first day of school but still felt really lonely. Today in class we were doing a group activity and the teacher told us to get in pairs, everyone did so but me because there was one kid missing so the whole time I felt like I was excluded and hopeless. The recess time came and I did the same thing again go and play basketball, while I was playing I was thinking to myself “I don’t wanna be here anymore.” This day felt like a year because all I could think of is going home. When the final bell was ringing I stormed out of the classroom. Nearly crying I ran to my mom’s car ready to tell her that I didn’t want to be here anymore.
Once I was in the car my mom looked at me concerned.
“What happened?” She said worryingly.
I told her “I wanna go back to my old school I hate this school.”
“Why so? She asked me.
I told her “Because I don’t have any friends here” while wiping my eyes from tears.
“Did u try to make friends?” she asked concerned.
“No” I said
On the way home she told me everything was gonna be fine and that all I should do is just come up to someone introduce myself and everything is gonna be fine from there. I listened to her advice and the next day at school during lunch i saw two kids playing basketball from looking at their face I recognized them both from my class. I stood up from the lunch tables and started walking towards them.
“Hey guys my name is Alan” I said with a crackling voice.
“Sup man my name is Joe” One of the kids said.
The other kid said, “Hey man my name is Richard”
“May I play with y’all?” I asked.
“Sure man” the kids responded
Later when I was home I told my mom all about it she seemed very happy with me. I thanked her for giving me such good advice that helped me find friends in the new school. The whole week just got better for me because I wasn’t feeling lonely anymore and I made friends that love to do the same things as me. Coming to school wasn’t painful anymore and became my favorite part of the day, as all I would think about is playing basketball with my new pals. It was also comfortable being in the classroom knowing there are people I can talk to finally.
At last, coming to a new school was a really big obstacle I had to overcome with many barriers in the way for me like anxiety and being shy. But throughout this emotional roller coaster I had my mom helping me and giving me advice the whole way. In the end, I made really good friends who were always there for me, they helped me throughout the school year and all the life challenges I faced.
