Confidence is one of the most attractive quality a person could have. No one can see how great a person is, unless that person sees it himself or herself. When it comes to an interview, nervousness and fear of failure overtake confidence, but maintaining a positive attitude and holding confidence is really important. Academic degrees, certificates and previous experience in the field only add weight to the resume and today’s job interview world became very competitive. The crucial factor in convincing the interviewer that one is the perfect fit for the job is that person’s confidence.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines confidence as “a feeling of consciousness of one’s powers or of reliance on one’s circumstances […] faith or belief that one will act in a right, proper, or effective way”. Basically, confidence is an unique product of an individual, shaped by its conscious, experience and self-esteem.
Experts advise on tips about how to become confident during an interview and they refer to eye contact, body language, handshake, tone of voice, dress code, suggested answers and questions to ask back.
The body language makes the biggest impact, because not only gives the interviewer an image as a first impression, but also communicates non-verbally the individual’s perception and state-of-mind. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, body language represents “the gestures, movements and mannerisms by which a person or animal communicates with others […] movements or positions of the body that express a person’s thoughts or feelings”. The body language boosts people’s confidence by making them feel better about themselves and also by creating a positive image of them in relation with others.
Posture smiling and eye contact have a big contribution to the overall concept.
An individual’s body language, its physiology, plays a crucial role in building self-confidence. Amy Cuddy, a social psychologist, demonstrates in her TED talk that “your body language may shape who you are” (TEDGlobal, 2012). The golden rule of body language is to take up as much space as possible. When feeling anxious or worried, people have the tendency to shrink and cover themselves, and when feeling confident, people open up and relax. For example, while sitting, a confident person should have the back against the back of the chair and feet flat on the floor, with a slight 90-degree bend or lightly crossed, while the hands resting on the lap, shoulder relaxed and head up. When first greeting someone, direct eye contact and smile are suggested, but keeping too much eye contact might creep people out, while giving no eye-contact reveals insecurity.
Confidence, through the way of speech, gives wings to a person’s abilities and skills by making him appear positive in front of an experienced interviewer. A good example of “Say it wrong but say it with confidence” was related by Vaishnavi Gadde through Quora (2018). Vaishnavi witnessed how a candidate to a job interview took the position by simply not being intimidated by the fact that he did not know the answer to a technical question. Instead, the candidate used some random acronyms which he pretended to have knowledge of, made out some random meanings of the acronyms and impressed the interviewer through his confidence.
Positive thinking while attending an interview builds up confidence. For instance, a candidate should think more of the reasons why the interviewer would hire him for instead of eliminating him, the same way a hiring manager gets into the job interview hoping to find the right match.
While a job interview is a big opportunity to a dream job, confidence is the master key. There are endless resources of advice and how-to answer questions or to make an impression, however confidence in an interview helps a candidate to stand out of the crowd.
