Genghis Khan united the tribes of Asia that had been warring for hundreds of years. He founded the biggest adjoining empire in history, the Mongols. They conquered huge parts of Central Asia and China. At their peak, they controlled over 11 million contiguous square miles. About the size of Africa.
Temujin (Genghis Khan) came from nothing. He was born in 1162 in Khentii province, Mongolia. During his childhood he was almost killed several times, survived months in the wilderness alone, was abandoned from his tribe, captured and enslaved, and yet grew up to unite Mongolia.
After that, he adopted the name Genghis Khan. He expanded his Mongolian Empire into China, Russia, the Middle East, and then to Europe. Unlike others at that time, he formed a meritocracy in his army. Meaning that higher rank was not determined by your family’s status, but by your own skills. This gave them a huge advantage.
Many people were killed during his invasions, he was responsible for over 40 million deaths.
This is how he helped remove 700 million tons of carbon from the atmosphere. Although many people were slaughtered, he granted freedom to his subjects, encouraged trade, and created the first international postal system. He showed appreciation for honesty and even pardoned someone who shot his neck with an arrow. That person later on became one of the most prominent generals in Genghis’ army. The loyalty that was bred through these types of actions are one of the reasons why he was successful.
At the age of 65, Genghis Khan died.
The cause of death is unknown and where his tomb was buried is unknown. He specifically asked to be buried in an unmarked grave. After he was buried thousands of cavalry was ridden over the area to make the exact spot indistinguishable. All the cavalry were killed and the everyone that was there were killed too so no one would know where he was buried. But it is largely believed that he was buried in his birthplace, Khentii province. This area has been guarded ever since, and is forbidden for outsiders. Many researchers and historians want his tomb to be found, but Mongolians don’t. Digging up graves in the Mongolian culture is extremely frowned upon.
Today, Genghis Khan is viewed as a national hero to Mongolians. Being a full Mongolian myself, I would know. There are many monuments and products celebrating Chinggis Khaan (Genghis Khan known to the west). Such as Chinggis Khaan statue that is 131 feet, Chinggis Khaan alcohol, Chinggis Khaan hotel, Chinggis Khaan International airport and so on.
He is a big part of Mongolia’s past and accomplished something no one could do, unite all the Mongol clans.
