This assignment is versatile to suit students who are currently employed in a healthcare workplace and also students who may not be currently employed. Where possible, request access to the current policy and procedure documents that are in place at your workplace or education institution. These may be available via the website for your organisation, an intranet site for employees only or in paper versions stored by administration staff. You can ask your manager, supervisor or colleagues to assist with accessing these documents.
For example, Queensland Health has a section for Health systems & governance in the footer of their website (https://www.health.qld.gov.au ), in that section there is a link to Policies and standards.
From here there is information on the types of policy documents in the organisation and access to an alphabetical list of all organisational policies and related supporting documents. |
Under take a review of the policies and procedures that you can find for:
Question 1.1
Where did you source the policy and procedures that you accessed for your review?
If possible, provide a link to where these documents are published on the Internet or upload a copy as a separate file with this assignment. Detail how you searched for and found these documents.
I reviewed the health policies and procedures of Victoria via internet. While searching for the required documents and policies, I used specific key words like child-protection AND Victoria Victoria’s Child Protection AND government policy. This brought all the policies and procedures that were most relevant and I got ideas and points which I needed. From the many options brought, I selected the one I needed. Child protection is the policy for my in-depth review. |
Select one of these policies for an in-depth review; where possible choose a policy that is relevant to your current work responsibilities. Alternatively you can imagine a future job role and select a policy that you believe would be relevant to the work responsibilities of that role.
Question 1.2
What is the job role that you are detailing and the policy you have chosen for an in-depth review?
How is that policy relevant to the work responsibilities the job role detailed?
My job role is social work and the policy for in-depth review is child protection. My job and the child protection policy go hand in hand. Being a social care worker, it is my duty to help the children and their families in difficulties and challenges they face like child labour, child malnutrition, child physical assult, child trafficking and other accidental incidents. It is also my duty to asses if the policies and procedures of child protection are fully met and undertake any investigation required. Another responsibility under my social worker resume is to check the needs of the children and work towards their needs to keep the children safe and where their families are unable to care for. All these responsibilities go hand in hand with my job specification |
Question 1.3
For the policy of your in-depth review, outline a situation that could occur if the related procedures were not performed correctly or if there was another type of failure scenario related to the policy. What could be the consequences of a policy breach? Should such an incident be reported? How?
If a person in charge of child’s care does not exercise proper control to protect the child from a misconduct about which he or she is aware of like physical, emotional or psychological abuse and neglect then this act of ignore or staying indifferent is considered guilty. For instance, where the child is discriminated on the basis of race by the caretakers who are expected to prevent them from such incidences. The consequence of breaching this policy is imprisonment up to a period of 10 years. Such cases should be reported by calling the Child Abuse Report Line on 131478 which is open in 24 hours a day or one can make emergency call on 000 . |
Task2.1
Effectively washing hands is a most important consideration for those working in a healthcare and community services workplaces, it is also relevant information for the general public in maintaining good health. For this task you are required to produce a guide, brochure or poster that relates to how to effectively wash hands. Your document needs to be designed to:
You can include details for personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, if you wish.
You will find useful information and resources from the website of Hand Hygiene Australia:

Task2.2
There are a number of means by which you could circulate your hand hygiene document. Consider a communication platform that may be in use in the community or health services and explain how you would circulate (and possibly revise) your document for distribution via digital media (such as website or intranet, social media, podcast or video channel etc.) Are these any organisation policies that may need to be considered in the process of publishing the digital communication?
To circulate my hand hygiene document, first I will revise the document into an image and make brochures. The first platform is placing the brochures in the health centres’ noticeboards. Here it will be accessed by both the community and health service members. The brochures will also be given to members in person to help them take it personal and make a point of going through it. The other platform to make use of is the school website. Here it will be accessed by various groups of people, those in school as well as those visiting the school website from different parts of the world. All these should be considered especially in publishing digital communication because many will be in a position to get access to the idea being promoted and thus worth considering. The publishing the brochures in the healthcare notice board or making community based campaign will be important to spread awareness among the Australian aboriginals because social-economic, physical and cultural barriers in remote communities make it challenging to promote hand washing regime among child and adults with soap via television advertisements. The approval guidelines as proposed by the Government of Australia in the domain of digital communication include process

Locate a copy of the role or position description (PD) for your current work role or look for a position description for a healthcare or community services work role that you are interested in. Upload a copy of the position description with this assignment. You may be able to find a relevant position description:
Question 3.1
Does the PD include information that details the industry and related award for the role?
Where else could you go to find relevant information for industry standards and award rates?
The position description includes all the requirements in my job industry and is hand in hand with my job role. For instance, the PD provides the class of clients that I am likely to work with and the typical tasks accompanied with the job. Furthermore, the PD provides the general salary scale and the options of work hours. I can as well obtain the same information from the various social workers unions, department of labour or the human resource department of various community centres. |
Question 3.2
List one of the responsibilities of the role detailed in the PD that would have legislative requirements or accreditation standards that apply. Provide a link to the standards and/or detail what they are.
Maintaining accurate records and preparing reports for legal action. Accredited by the Australian Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics and Standards. AASW provides Accreditation Standards to ensure that social workers practise is legal and law abiding |
Question 3.3
What other healthcare professionals would this work role cooperate with in performing the job responsibilities? Would this include dealing with different levels and sectors of the health industry?
Other healthcare professionals that work hand in hand with Social Work include field of paediatrics, psychiatrics, palliative care as well as maternal health. Having gone through the initial training of being a Social Worker, with direction one is fit to work in these areas within the same level and sector of health industry. Furthermore, the social worker works hand in hand with the respective physiologists for offering guidance and counselling |
Question 3.4
What type of issues could be encountered in performing the duties of this work role? What would you do if you identified an area of improvement with how the organisation handled a certain issue?
Emotional responses, lack of cooperation especially from parents who have psychiatric illness and lack of confidence from the affected person while explaining him or her. The personal level issue that is frequently encountered among the social workers is compassion fatigue and burnout. In case I find an area which needs improvement among these, the best thing is to try to tackle the issue as long as it is within my care and ability otherwise I will write a proposal and forward it to the management of the health centre. In case of compassion fatigue, experience by my co-workers, I will try to motivate them so that they can work with more empathy. |
Question 3.5
What type of personal skill maintenance or development would be relevant to continuing in this work role? Where would you access information or advice on how to set goals and plan for skill and knowledge development in the role? How should future work goals be focussed?
Social work in the domain of children welfare demands a wide variety of psychological and emotional skills along with formal academic training. While knowledge and practices are two main domains which define the profession, some of the most important skills that are require sustaining in the profession and to deliver care in a comprehensive manner is developed during the course of internal practice. Some of the personal skill maintenance that I feel will be relevant for continuing in this job role include 1. Taking detailed note: this will help to track the experience of the client and develop appropriate interventions and strategies. 2. Organisational skills: Being organised is an important criterion to work under the hectic schedule of a childcare worker. This will help to multi-task in an effective manner and thereby helping to reduce compassion fatigue 3. Proper knowledge in developmental strategy and interventions: This is critical in understanding the psychology of the child through the various developmental stages and thereby developing interventions accordingly. 4. Developing a sense of empathy: empathy is extremely an important skill for a social worker however, it may increase the chances of developing compassion fatigue. 5. Critical thinking skills: This will helpful to make effective decision 6. Verbal and written communication skills: This will help to easily interact with a diverse group of population. In my domain it will help to interact with the child and their parents and thereby helping to understand their problems and address the situation accordingly. I would access the relevant information in the grounds of child social care for the proper planning of skill and development from the website of the Australian Human Rights Commission. This website contains detailed information in the domain of role of social workers. Via going through this website, I will be able to understand the human rights of children in Australia and this information will be extremely helpful while addressing the needs of the children suffering from mental or physical abuse or are the victims of the child labour. It will also help me to get a detailed insight about the rights and the sufferings of the Australian aboriginal people and their children along with the rights against racism and discrimination. I will also go through the Speech to Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) Queensland State Social Work Conference by Mr. Edward Santow, Human Rights Commissioner in order to plan my future goals accordingly. My future planning in the domain of social work will include 1. More focus on Community based social work. It will help me to identify the areas of improvement for communities and thereby creating and implementing plans to remedy the problems and then accordingly measure the effectiveness to foster new growth. Moreover, working in community based care setup will help to address the problems and sufferings of the aboriginal people and their children, 2. I will design awareness campaign in community setup directed towards importance of mental health and issues related to mental illness, child abuse, child trafficking and importance of education in a children life. This awareness campaign will mostly be generated via pictorial poster presentation in order to attract the mass especially the aboriginal people residing in Australia. 3. I will also target advance care planning (acp), including related concept of anticipatory care planning. Such ACP will mostly involve process of finding out simultaneous recording of client’s preferences on how they want to be cared for are liked to be treated by the health and social care services in future. I will also make sure that these processes are distinguished from the other care planning regime as part of case or care management in providing care services. |
