Diver safety training program has become necessary with the increasing numbers if road accidents (Glendon & Clarke, 2015). Highlighting the current situation faced by the United Parcel Service, the study has identified that ensuring a safe drive, training program has become necessary for the people. On the other hand, it is true that more than 800 deaths in the road accident has impacted on the global logistics company. The purpose of the study to analyze different situation faced by the organization and its training need analysis process has been discussed. Analyzing the issues, which has been faced by the company, measurable recommendations have been provided in this study.
As stated by Danyo, Dasgupta and Wheeler (2018), it cannot be denied that in America, the long haul trucking has become very dangerous due to increasing death in the roads. Due to lack of proper training and increasing workload, training has become necessary for the drivers for avoiding such incidents (Glendon & Clarke, 2015). As the employees are the backbone for every organizations, therefore, introducing the effective initiatives for providing the safety to the drivers have become necessary. In that case, the company has decided to introduce technology in the training program. By sharing the skills of disaster management as well as different machinery equipment in the training program, the company has aimed to increase the efficiency of the drivers. Online driving training and customer service training are the important initiatives adopted by the company. In the five days training program, the company has decided to provide the knowledge regarding basic safety, driving techniques as well as driving ethics. In order to make the outstanding learning session, the company has focused on introducing the cost benefit training program. Both the theoretical and practical aspects of learning are the significant part of the training program.
Analyzing the current situation of the training program, it has been identified that UPS has introduced the defensive driving course for the driver. It is true that the company has pointed out the communication process of the driver, however, in the training need analysis process, self-analysis is very important for identifying the weakness of individuals. In that case, determining the performance gap is very important as learning capacity of each and every driver cannot be same. Depending on the weakness of them, the training needs to be provided.
Technology is being considered as the common training method of learning, however, group discussion is also very important for increasing the efficiency of the employees (Panadero, Jonsson & Strijbos, 2016). If the drivers will discuss the situation faced by the, with their colleagues, it will help them to understand view of individuals. In the words of Berry et al., (2018), lack of group discussion in the training method, can create the learning process slower. Analyzing the training evaluation methods, it has been identified that Behavioral application evaluation method needs to be added. Due to lack of implementation of outcome evaluation process, the awareness regarding the training program has not been increased.
It cannot be denied that depending on the latitudinal and longitudinal values, the traffic rules may different in different locations. As the company has become a global brand, in that case, it is very important for providing a separate session to the employees regarding the current traffic regulations and road ethics to the drivers. Analyzing the current state of training program, it has been identified that lack of knowledge regarding the traffic regulation can be the cause of the failure of training program.
According to Wood et al., (2014), group discussion is being considered as the method that helps to maintain the communication as well as interaction between the people with similar background. In case of improving the training program in United Parcel Service, group discussion is needed. With this initiative both the suitable and unsuitable candidate can be identified. By supporting this Dragomir et al., (2018) stated that by following the typical group discussion technique. Semi-circular and circular argument can be introduced during the training. As the training has mainly focused on providing the safety to the drivers as well as improving their knowledge regarding different types of road situations. In this process, the trainer will nominate one person, who will discuss about the road situation he has faced or how the person has handled the situation. It can be assumed that with this initiative, it will help to develop proper interaction process between the employees. It is also true that through the group discussion process, the knowledge sharing process can be improved (Milne, 2015). Through the training program, the company has aimed to increase the knowledge of the drivers regarding the disaster management. It can be assumed that the group discussion process can help to increase the cooperative behavior among the employees, where each can provide their opinion regarding a particular disaster. With this initiative, skill of the participants can be increased.
In the words of Hawe and Dixon (2017), self-assessment is being considered as an effective process in which individuals can understand their strength and weakness. Therefore, in order to introduce an effective training program, self-assessment is needed. By supporting this Sierra and Frodden (2017) stated that it cannot be denied that an effective training program considers the significant factor to determine the organizational efficiency, which is dependent on the employees’ capabilities. In order to introduce an effective training program, it is needed for the company to increase the capability of the participant for analyzing the situation.in that case, the participants will be able to understand their transferrable skills , values, priorities, passion, interest, strength and weakness (Panadero, Jonsson & Strijbos, 2016). If the self-assessment program can be introduced in the workplace, it will be easier for the participants to understand their capabilities for do their job efficiently. Using this technique in the training program, the trainer will also be able to understand the performance gap of the participants. As the training is mainly based on improving the knowledge of safe driving techniques, using self-assessment tool in the training program the previous knowledge regarding course can be analyzed. After identifying the weakness of the employees, the trainer will be able to prove proper training depending on the needs. In this process, the candidates will be different psychometric tests, so that their psychological condition for handling disaster situation can be analyzed.
Analyzing the gap of training evaluation program, it has been identified that in order to implement the training program in right manner, the company needs to focus on introducing the behavioral application method in the evaluation process. It helps to understand the behavioral changes, which can be seen after the process of learning. This method is very important for evaluate the behavioral aspects of the learner. After the knowledge acquisition process, the behavioral evaluation method is needed (Leonardi, 2017). It is important for utilizing the modeling, instructions and feedbacks for learning process. It cannot be denied that ensuring an effective behavioral application method, it can be easily analyzed if the participants will apply the skill or knowledge, which have been provided them during the training process or not. In the words of Berry et al., (2018), the behavioral application can be done in three phases such as alignment phase, assimilation phase and application phase. In the case of Alignment phase, pre training arrangements are being discussed. In this process, understanding the behavioral characteristics of the participants, there interest towards learning can be analyzed. During this process, the trainer gets to understand what the participants expect from the learning session. It also helps to understand the capability of the participants in order to achieve the goals and objectives. Eyler and Giles (2014) opined that In the phase of assimilation, the behavioral characteristics of the participants, during the learning process, can be analyzed. It is true that the process defines the engagement of participants towards achieving the goals and objectives of the learning program. in case of United Parcel Service training program, if the trainer will be able to understand if the employees are enjoying or engaging themselves in the training program or not. Application phase is being considered as the after training situation. In this process the application of the learning skills are being analyzed. In this process, the trainer involves the participants in different tough situation and observe if they are being confident to manage the situation or not.
At the end of this study, it can be recommended that knowledge regarding the traffic rules and regulations are required for implementing an effective training program. In the words of Li and Tay (2014), it cannot be denied that it is very important for the driver to be aware of the traffic rules and ethical boundaries while driving in the highways. It has been highlighted that the company has not given much importance to take a separate session on the traffic regulation. In that case, it can be suggested that a separate session needs to arrange on for the participants. In that case the training program can be extended for 2 days. Before starting the training program, the knowledge of the participants regarding the traffic rules and regulations will be analyzed. After that the significance to understanding the traffic regulation will be discussed with the participants. In that case several learning materials can be used. Using the digital technology and presentation, the trainer will describe the importance of understanding traffic regulations for handling different kind of situations in the road.
Conclusion
In this study, it can be concluded that analyzing the current situation in United Parcel Service, it can be said that the training program has become necessary for maintaining the safety of the employees. Analyzing the current situation in the organization, it has been identified that the training initiatives which have been adopted by the organization, it has been identified that there are few more areas in which the company needs to focus, it has been suggested in this study that group discussion, self-assessment, behavioral application evaluation method and knowledge regarding thee traffic rules and regulation are needed to be added in the training program. if such initiatives can be implemented by the company, it will help to reduce the rate of road accidents while driving.
