Sweatshops are places where workers do not have fundamental rights and worked out to exhaustion. They date back to similar occasions that transpired in the 16th century although the events began to uncover themselves in 1889 where; people worked in filthy, cruel and unfriendly conditions but have to put up with this type of settings because it is their only source of income and they were grateful. To correctly describe what a sweatshop is, “it is a working environment that damages more than one government and state work law and their representatives’ work for extended periods, under poor conditions, while paid low wages.” (Garyfalakis). Most of the people who are employed in sweatshops are women and children. This paper aims to evaluate whether working in sweatshops can be a positive experience for both women and children, and present my personal views as to whether working in this areas has a positive effect on them. The paper will gather adequate evidence from authors who have explored the issues.
The nature of sweatshops is hard to get and understand since the exploitation suffered by women and children is not unseen to everyone. These shops are unethical as they make people work in poor conditions violating the internationally agreed labor rights and the low wages and payments or salary they receive. “The poor working conditions of sweatshops are dangerous and socially unacceptable for people to work”, (Van Rys, Meyer & Sebranek, 2011).. The absence of adequate safety and the healthy working environment is not put into consideration in most multinational firms that indulge themselves in exploiting workers through sweatshops. Most companies that unethically involve themselves towards workers are criticized for their actions. “Nike and GAP received a lot of pressure to amend and change their practice of labor and counter the negative publicity from media.” Garyfalakis, p.301). In sweatshops, workers are exploited through all ways possible. Companies accumulate profits in sweatshops at the expense of providing workers with minimum facilities and harsh working conditions (Powell, 2014). The author of ‘No Sweat’ claims that big companies have published laws, code of conduct as well as guidelines for protecting workers from any exploitation but this only looks pleasing one the wall for it is not enforced or applied in the companies’ operations.
Sweatshops go against globally recognized laws such as the freedom from forced labor as well as rights that empower workers to object to any form of mistreatment. In some occasions, workers are even denied their wages after working for long hours without being let to leave the factory areas. Of all, the most serious incidents that have been associated with sweatshops is that of child labor. Children have been deeply incorporated in the processes of these businesses at an age that the constitution does not allow to partake any activities of a company. Employers have been accused of employing children aged 9-14 years because they can easily mistreat them and even fail to pay their wages. According to CD Meyers, “the common sense moral presumption against economic exploitation which is supported by the dominant moral theories of today.” (Garyfalakis, p.300). This is a clear indication that companies accumulate more revenues and profits by squeezing it out of women and children from the sweatshops making overworking them.
Women and children make the larger population of a worker in the sweatshops. They are exploited blatantly by being subjected to a lot of work as if they are adults. This is because the society does not educate women as it does to male. Sweatshops prefer employing women and children because they will exploit them as they want and pay them less. If one happens to go to the washroom and the company notices a decline in the production, their salary for the entire month is not paid. Workers in this companies lead miserable lives and strain to put food on their tables because of the low wages given to them (Sollars & Englander, 2018). Sweatshops deal with consumers by presenting them with an ethical and moral dilemma of who undertakes the production of the products. “It is the effect of triangular manufacturing” (Garyfalakis, p.303).
Conclusion
In conclusion, many companies in developing countries run as sweatshops but in a skeptical way. This makes it difficult for people to realize that they are overworked and underpaid. Claims are put forward that sweatshops make women and children go through a positive experience. In a small percentage, I agree with this claim as they make them hardworking. However, the negativities of sweatshops such as poor working conditions, low wages, exploiting women and children blatantly and failure to pay them to surpass their benefits to the society. I, therefore, disagree with the claim that working in sweatshops can have a positive experience with women and children because of the suffering they experience in this companies cannot be associated with anything good in their life.
