This present article will be based on a case study about the use and further exploration through innovation of robotics to enjoy the competitive edge in the business of a company of Artificial Intelligence the CEO of which is keenly interested in further development of business through launching of different robots in the market for domestic as well as industrial market. For this purpose the CEO has given the assignment to the ICT manager of the company with short and long term perspective of effective business. The company is facing huge competition from the market and to get the edge on competitors, the CEO wishes to launch those products in a long term measured effect. This article will emphasize the definition of robotics, the use of this technology, the ethical part of using robots in perspective of human employment and ultimate effect of robots on the community and the society. It is also to be emphasized that if those products of the company can prove sustainability in the market due to the chance of duplication of the product as it is very obvious that the products could be imitated the moment when it will reach the market with its useful features. For avoiding this, the products are to be unique with its features and the inherent trade secret of those products which is not easy to be replicated (Gerbert, Justus, & Hecker, 2017).
As per Robot Institute of America, 1979 robotics is the technology through which a designed manipulator with the features of reprogrammable, and multifunctional in the form a machine for the purpose of taking care of different works in the fields of moving, parts, materials or instruments along with type of specialized devices by different motions pre-programmed to perform different type of tasks (Canton, 2016).
Though this definition, robotics can be easily understood. The robots are the result of application of latest technologies to enhance the scope of work through mechanism which can make the jobs easier and with perfection and accuracy. The word robotics is being introduced by Runaround, a small story published in 1942. This story had contained the Law of Robotics by Asimov with alter addition of Zeroth Law which is being depicted below:
Law Zero – a robot may not make injury to humanity or through inaction, may cause harm to the humanity.
Law One- A robot may not make injury to any human being, or though its inaction, will allow any human being to cause harm if this is instrumental to violate higher order law.
Law Two- a Robot has to obey the orders forwarded by human beings except in the case such order may cause conflict with any higher order law.
Law Three- A robot must have the right to protect its own existence till such protection is conflicting with a higher order law.
The introduction of first modern robot was named as Unimates which was developed by George Devol and Joe Engerberger in the period of late 50’s and early 60’s. The initial patents were taken by Devol for machines taking care of parts transfer. Engelberger is instrumental to launch the first robots in the market. Thus Engelberger is called the Father of Robotics.
Latest development of robotics has been done through modern industrial revolution and this has increased the ability and performance through development of controller and language sensors, powered by improved machineries, sensing with the system to drive. The main impetus on the robot industry had been initiated by the automotive industry in 1980’s due to the reason of deploying large amount if investment. Although same had not shown desired result and proved to be disastrous as the quick action of introducing robots in the automotive manufacturing system had violated the economic viability along with integration. This industry has faced big ups and downs and this industry ahs faced recovery in the mid-80 so far revenue level is concerned. By this time the industry has faced substantial shakeout as in the US, there was only one company Adept who were in the manufacturing process of robot arm business. The other had either would up or switched over to other industry, or were sold to other Japanese or European companies (Riley-Smith, 2017).
In case of research community, the first automata were known as machina of 1940 by Grey Walter and Hopkins beast of John. The introduction of devices with tele-operated and controlled by remote were launched earlier as the first ever radio controlled vehicle is launched by Nikola Telsa ion 1890. Telsa is the pioneer in the field of induction motor, AC power transmission and several other electrical devices. They are also capable of envisioning smarter way of mechanism which ahs the capability as humans.
Further innovation in the field of robotics were navigated by SRI’s Shakey with high level of structured indoor environments in late 60’s Stanford Cart of Moravee was the first genuine attempt to ensure natural outdoor scenes during late of 1970’s. Since then the trend was upstart with propagation of work in driving machines with autonomous entity which could cruise at high speed and with ensuring navigation of outdoor environment in the field of commercial applications (Cs, 2015).
so far the industry of Artificial Intelligence in Australia is concerned, a survey had been conducted by The Guardian; the result of which was published on the 24th of February 2017 through their report ‘Artificial Intelligence has arrived, but Australian businesses are not ready for it’. In the same report it was depicted that survey of business leaders has observed that Australian companies are not at all prepared for accepting the arrival of AI technologies within the considered selected economies although the spending on this area of automation attracts second biggest amount of money.
The survey had been made by independent research agency Vanson Bourne by Infosys, the IT Company which are the pioneer of selling AI platform with the inherent interest to promote such technology in the country. They have chosen 1600 samples of business leaders of the category of more than 1000 human resource strength and with the annual turnover of $ 500 million across China, US, Australia, India , Germany France and UK (Chappell, 2017).
As per this survey released at the World Economic Forum last week, bog businesses of Australia had investment of an average of $ 7.9 m in AI last year, which is behind US only with the resultant spot of last position in AI skill development and plans to integrate AI.
The Infosys Head of Australia had expressed his views that AI needs proficient approach in STEM or science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills, with innovation, digital proficiency, and creativity with the ability to solving problem with continued learning (Ong, 2017).
The survey had found that 23% of Australian business leaders have the belief that their company is lacking behind the skills for capitalizing on AI. The survey also inferred that the tendency of the business leaders to make their worker redundant instead of reassigning them with other role as there is lack of skills in the human resource of Australia (Opray, 2017).
As a part of the expansion strategy with upgrading the business scenario of the AI Company of us, the CEO would have foresight to emerge as an upcoming AI company with products of market demand and with emerging pull by the customers. As instructed by the CEO I have to explore certain avenues as the ICT Manager of our company by developing some new products which can prove its sustainability in long run of AI industry. I have planned to develop some products which are based on Spiking Neuron Adaptive Processor or SNAP Technology. Feature of this technology are to make others learn autonomously, with evolving and associating information in the way which human brain complies with. This SNPA technology can be helpful if incorporated into several products which are developed by other companies who are waiting for AI style cognitive computing system. The feature of this product is through application which monitors the video stream from cameras of standard surveillance purpose around the casinos with the ability to recognize the cards played, wining hands, the rules of the specific game and ensuring correct payout. It is estimated that the Game Outcome will be able to save the industry up to $ 35 million per casino annually and this will be proved to be an emerging market as casinos will look for it to use smart technology (Smith, 2016).
The other product to be launched is as app which has the ability to help blind people to feel and see the world through artificial intelligence. This will be developed through using AI algorithm to nearly in instantaneous identification effort of any object when smart phone is held over it and describe it loudly about the product. The original concept of this APP is emerged from an assignment of Singularity University and the inventor of this concept was a student of the same. The objective of this assignment was to create something new which can have the impact for next ten years for billion of people (Sadler, 2016).
As per the case study, our company is doing business in the field of Artificial Intelligence. The company wants to enjoy the competitive advantage by launching certain products for their short and long term sustainability in domestic as well as overseas market. For this purpose, the company has to take the technology driven devices which are covered under the nomenclature of robots. There are certain advantages and disadvantages of robotics which can be discussed here:
There are certain advantages of robotics which are appended below:
There are few disadvantages too:
As the ICT manager of the company I have to consider the safety and security measure related to deployment of robotics in my organization. It is often found that proper training in this field can enhance the outcome of the technology. But improper training can result to loss of energy, time and some times with disastrous result.
To mitigate these possibilities, I have to ensure that robots are being used as per the directive provided by the manufacturer. I have to ensure that properly trained personnel will take care of the operation on the floor by the robots. The scheduled hours of work are to be strictly maintained.
Conclusion:
It is mostly found that human being is depending upon automation in their daily life as well as in commercial life also. Everybody wants to get the relief and stay in comfort zone by lesser involvement of physical involvement. This feature is mainly responsible for developing robotics. When robots are introduced in the commercial aspect, they are taking the burden of several workers and ultimately make them redundant and create unemployment in massive magnitude. To ensure that none would loose their job for use of robots, it is the demand of the situation to create certain replacement policies by the companies with proper training and rehabilitation for the employees. The use of robots are mainly found in the industrial sector of big magnitude where of people are employed in numbers. Robots can replace them in huge numbers and thus create a vacuum in the employment situation by making them redundant. Although robots are cost worthy in long term, their initial installation with subsequent operation may cause time consuming. Hence it is to be identified proper needs of robots for the industry and then arrange for deployment of the same in order to ensure better output from the machines.
The recommendations for using robots in each field of domestic and industrial segment are;
