In today’s workplace with the change in the business there is the change in the workforce. More and more companies or departments allow their employees to use mobile devices at their workplace to perform their jobs when they are out of office. It helps in increasing the productivity and effectiveness and this will helps employees in increasing their moral and satisfaction (Nadeau 2013). New technology is also bringing change in the workplace and artificial intelligence, robotics and mobility offerings are making your work less. The future workplace change will definitely use artificial intelligence in the workplace. More and more organizations are making changes in the workplace according to work. There is a demand of new changes in the strategies and in approaches. With the changes in the workplace in future there will be generation of the boomers; employees will find new places where they can work, the way of living life will be different. The paper will through light on the changes in the employees in the present condition thinking about the future changes going to take place in the organization. Not only the changes in the employees but also in the human resource management.
Imagining the future workplace employees are bringing change in the present so that they can actually be able to deal with it. Employees are constantly creating benchmark on their set goals and they are increasing their efficiency and also capabilities. With the implication of the new technology, customer demands they are finding a new way of working. For example- A company XYZ having employees who uses mobile devices and they try to learn and enhance their knowledge every day. They use internet to access details related to their work and this enhance the productivity of the employees.
Businesses are of different types and include different professions. Different professions have different demands, in some fields there is a need of the employees to be updated with the recent changes. For retaining in the company there is a demand of the personal development from the employees (Noe 2010). It is beneficial for the employees if they are up to date with the changes occurring in their field. This will increase the chances of the employee’s promotion. With the use of the technology such as mobile devices, employees can easily check the updates and this will enhance the knowledge of the employee.
With the use of the mobile devices by the employees it makes the quick communication instead of waiting for the reply on mails. It also enhances the way of working on the field and will boost job performance. The technology makes it simpler to manage the work on the real time basis that prevents from making blunders. Let’s take an example if an employee of the company wants to communicate that he won’t be able to come to the office (Park, Fritz & Jex 2011). With the use of technology and app he can update the same in the app so that the team gets to know about it.
Using mobile devices for the professional purpose is beneficial but it will also bring personal grooming of employees. That will lead to the employees to grow in that field; in future they can be on higher position. Employees can take part in the operational and strategic management. Here are some of the development ideas which an employee can apply while using the technology.
Learning and developing skills takes time, employees focus on the development while working so that they don’t feel overburden with the work (The guardian 2017).
With the changes in the technology there is the change in the working of the employees. Employees are in the learning phase they have started learning the different mobile devices which can easily be accessible to them at the work place also. This is found that the employee’s productivity will increase with the use of technology. They can get the information on real time and they can attain meetings through conference system they can also connect to the customers. At the workplace employees wait for the reply from the customer but with the updating in the technology they can focus on the other development skills that will enhance the knowledge (Aral, Brynjolfsson, & Van Alstyne 2012). They can check different task at the same time and they can utilize there empty time.
Use of updated technology and mobile devices enables employees to complete their task effectively at less time because with the use of technology they can easily do the work at real time. Employees don’t have to go back to their desk or have to work. With the use of technology, if employees find any query they can easily resolve that query, can understand the topic. If any of the employees is working on the physical location they can complete their work from that location itself with the help of the technology (Acemoglu & Autor 2011).
Employees agree to the statement that the use of technology or mobile devices is helpful in making their life smooth. Employees cannot manage their work and their personal life together. It seems so difficult to manage both the things simultaneously. For making that easy most of the companies allow their employees to use mobile at work but definitely with the change in the technology employees want to bring this change at the workplace. So, they will be able to manage both their personal and professional life (Lee, Hsieh, & Hsu, 2011).
Employee’s helps customers and spend more time with them so that they can help the customer with their services and provide quality service to them. Now a day, employees provide details to the customers with the help of technology. Customers agree to the point that mobile phone having the mobile technology with internet can give a good work control and balance the work life (Sarker, Xiao, Sarker, & Ahuja 2012).
Above points shows that with the change in the technology there is a change in the workplace of the business. Companies are investing amount in the technology so that they can get the work as soon as possible from their employees.
Human resource management plays a vital role in the business working, with the emerging the use of mobile app HR is also operating different ways to deal with the situation. HR plays a major role in the organization. HR manages the recruitment or hiring process of the company. They search and hire employees to whom they found fit for the job as per the skills and capabilities of the person. With the emergence of new technology the way HR team works is totally changed, they recruit employees by using different devices (McPadden 2012). Most of the job seekers are registered on the online portals so that they can contact to the companies who are hiring, job seekers mail there CV to the portal so that companies can directly contact them. This makes the process of HR more convenient.
Mobile devices are making the recruitment process easily. In a company generally HR appoint workforce by the direct interviews but with the technology change and development. HR is changing the way to conduct the process they are recruiting employees with the use of software (Doherty 2010). According to the Deloitte’s global mobile consumer survey, 97% of adults aged 18-24 check their mobile phone frequently, approx. 74 times a day and in which they check mobile phones within 3 hours of waking up. For the internal and external functions HR have started using mobile devices which is making the recruitment process easier. Social media platforms are helping the employees to get the job. Aberdeen study says that 73% of 18-34 year ages job seeks got job through social networks (Parker, S. 2015). Out of which, 89% of recruiters used LinkedIn to hire employees. This shows that mobile devices are not on only used by the job seekers but HR is also using mobile devices to make the recruitment process easy for them.
With the change in the technology there is emergence of the apps through which employees can easily check their details. The app help to put information through employees fingerprints, so that no one else can check the personal details of the employee. The ADP’s mobile app is allowing employees to access the data such as pay slip, leaves, week off etc. Whenever they want and wherever they want (Karhu, Tang & Hämäläinen 2014). The app is available for 24/7 and 365 days. This is keep the employee update about the changes in the timing or helps in checking schedules so that they can prepare themselves for the same. So this makes the work of HR smoother as they don’t have to tell all these details to the employees. Employees can easily keep the records for the same.
Earlier HR used to hire employees by identifying the skills and for that HR work a lot to reach the right talent but with the change in the time and with the improvement in the technology there is an change in the recruiting the talented candidates for the company. Now HR team can easily use mobile devices to hire the employees, with the emergence of mobile technology most of the employees uses mobile (Johnson, Lukaszewski, & Stone 2016). As per the study done by the ADP, 37% of the mobile users depended on the smartphone access to search for the information through HR app. Now a days HR can easily reach to the employees who have talent is just because of the mobile devices. Cloud technology will help the business to grab the opportunity of the company.
HR earlier follows the procedure to the retain the employees is by telling the positive points related to the job and related to the promotion or by providing the facilities related to the unlimited vacation days or flexible working hours, but now this way is totally changed now HR follows a new way out that is they attract more and more younger employees with the new technology. The young generation is having a different perspective related to the work and work ethics and they have different set of expectations with the company (Meister, Willyerd, & Foss, 2010). They feel so that mobility is best for them. As per the study Aruba Networks found that Gen Mobile prefers the flexibility with the workplace and with the working hours. Technology has given us a way to change the life with the use of mobile devices. This attracts the young generation towards it; with the use of mobile apps employees can easily manage their work and personal life.
Businesses are optimizing the mobile devices to reach their customer and also with the expansion in the business it is expanding to the HR department and at present this change will impact the working of the future of the company and with the change in the work place they don’t will not find any struggling face (Santouridis & Trivellas 2010). Changes will be easily adaptable for the employees and for the HR department.
In the traditional method the way of communication between the two mangers and the employees is the direct face to face communication. In this managers and employees can contact to each other face to face but for the particular fix time (Shankar, Venkatesh, Hofacker & Naik 2010). They can communicate till the time employees and managers both stay in the office. But with the use of the technology the communication between the managers and employees can be done anytime which will bring flexibility in the work (Mulder 2012).
Business needs highly structured management in which the business deals need to be on the correct time and should be in routine. With the use of the technology like mobile devices employees and managers can easily access to the information with the use of the internet and then they can combine work on it but sharing their views with each other’s (Schwalbe, 2015). This is one of the benefits of the technology that it linked more and more people together which basically helps in identifying the views of different employees together. For example- a company ABC is having different branches at different countries with the use of the technology each employee can connect to the different employees at different countries and then they can work on one project by sharing their views together. This is not only for the employees but also for the managers and leaders. There are many companies whose managers give them instruction through emails but with the emergence of the technology leader can directly get in touch with their employees at different places (Yuan, Archer, Connelly, & Zheng, 2010). For example- ABC Company, manager operation from Noida and assistant manager operate Mumbai office for the communication or discussion they will use technology which is the best way to communicate in the proper manner. Not only communicating with each other but if they want to involve employees in the discussion they can do the same. This will reduce the time on doing conversation on the email and also this will provide clarity in the work which is important for the work.
Leader and mangers plays an important role in the working of the company. They lead the whole team and give instructions to them so that they can do wright thing at the right time. Sometimes on some documents company needs acknowledgment from the employees. So talking about the tradition method they do paper work but with the use of the technology the way of doing the things is also changes now they do all the procedure with the electronic mode this will not only reduces the paper cost but also increase the knowledge and improve the way of working. It is beneficial for the managers as well as they dint have to spend time in the formalities or for doing any kind of paper work.
Conclusion
The business brings a change in the workplace where the employees work. Talking about the changes that are going to take place in the future is use of mobile phone at workplace to manage work and professional life both, the changes in the workplace impact the life of the employees and they can spend time with the family. These effects the present of the employees as they want to learn more and more about the changes in the technology so that they can adapt that at their workplace and can do their work with the change and can show how the changes can affect the efficiency (Stam & Stanton 2010). With the change in workplace system, there is the change in the work life. Employees, HR and leaders and managers have changed the way they used to work now with the change in technology they have adapted new changes.
