“I don’t want a friend like you anyway!” screamed Danni.
“You need a friend like me, because I’m the only friend you’ve got!” retorted Nikki angrily.
“Stupid cow!” shouted Danni.
“Don’t think you’re staying at mine tonight!” Nikki threatened.
“I wouldn’t want to,” with that Danni grabbed her bags and stormed out slamming the door behind her. She stood on the doorstep for a split second to catch her breath and calm down, before she continued down the path. Danni was tempted to turn around, but she resisted it, she didn’t want to seem weak.
It had been a stupid argument, she was supposed to have taken her to a concert, but took her cousin instead, as it was her cousin’s favourite band. It was also Nikki’s favourite band and she had not been best pleased not to be her first choice. It had turned into a massive argument and resulted in her storming out at twelve o’clock at night.
Nikki and Danni had been best friends for ten years, and it hurt Danni every time they argued.
She wasn’t sure how Nikki felt; she was hard and tried her best not to show her feelings. Nikki was noticed everywhere she went, she was a stand out in a crowd kind of girl, not just from the way she looked, but by the way she acted, When she walked into a room everyone would turn and look for a second. Unlike Danni, when she walked into a room people ignored her, not even a glance in her direction.
Nikki had strikingly bright blonde hair that hung down her back like a glistening waterfall.
This went with her bright blue eyes that could send a shiver right through you if she gave you one of her cold stares. Most of her money was spent on hair paraphernalia, that she needed for the wacky styles she put her hair in every day, and makeup that she went through by the bundle (not that she needed it). Danni on the other hand was plain, her hair was cut just above her shoulders, and would never go in the style she tried to put it in, even if she went through a whole can of hairspray. Nothing stood out about her, her eyes were plain brown, her skin was pale with the occasional spot, she was not ugly, but she went everywhere with Nikki, so people would always look straight past her and see Nikki.
Danni knew where she had to go. She had to go to their special bus stop, it was quite out of the way, it backed onto a field and it was about a five minute walk from Nikki’s. She passed a row of trees and made her way down the alley to the bus stop. This is where her and Nikki’s friends would always meet at night, there was a cement patch with all their footprints in it. She couldn’t ring her mum and dad they would kill her, because Nikki and her were always having stupid fights and her parents were sick of it, no matter how much she didn’t want to, she to had go.
When she arrived there she just stood and stared at the writing, paralysed, from the cold, the fright of bring out this late on her own, and the shock of what had just happened. The writing was hers and Nikki’s, it had their names all over it. `NIKKI AND DANNI BEST FRIENDS FOREVER, NIKKI AND DANNI WOZ ERE 9T9. ` It brought tears to Danni’s eyes which spilled over, her warm fat tears trickling down her face, splashing on the floor like a dripping tap.
It was so quiet that she would have been able to hear a pin drop, she began to feel very vulnerable, she was on her own late at night, it was dark, she had no phone and very little money. Frightening thoughts started to flash through her mind, things that could happen to her. She could be RAPED, MURDERED, ROBBED, ATTACKED, anything if she was all alone. It was a really cold night. She put her freezing cold hands in to her jacket pockets to reach for her gloves and put them on rubbing her hands together at the same time to keep them warm.
She zipped her coat up to the top and put her hood up, which was fleecy inside and kept her ears warm. She stared at the bus stop which was half metal and half glass, the paint over the metal used to be grey, but it was so chipped and scratched that it had returned to it’s silvery, grey colour. She turned around and looked out on to the field that the street backed on to, it was so dark that she couldn’t to see the other side.
The field contained horses in the daytime, but they were kept in the stables at night. Danni would often visit them with a bag of bread. The whole field was surrounded by barbed wire, all bent out of shape. She turned around and looked up and down the street to see if she could see anyone coming, there was nothing, just deadly silence, which was occasionally broken by the howling of the wind, or rustling of the trees. She took a deep breath and she could almost taste the cold air, as it sent a tingle down her throat. She leaned back on the wall, to rest her tired legs, but quickly jolted up again, as she felt the cold wet stone through her thin track suit bottoms. She took one more look around, just to reassure herself that there was no one else about, when suddenly she heard lots of shouting from the alley near her, and she froze with fear.
She looked around terrified, but she couldn’t see anyone near her, She ducked behind the bus stop that hid her from sight. The shouting was coming nearer and nearer. She was shaking like a leaf, she sat on the floor in perfect silence. Waiting, she wasn’t sure what for, to live, to die, to laugh at this moment in ten years time and think of how stupid she was to be scared of such at little thing. The shouting seemed to be staying in one place. She didn’t dare to lift her head up and see where they were.
She wanted to just close her eyes and pretend she was at home in the comfort of her own bed, but a cold breeze brought her back to reality. She slowly lifted her head up, and through the glass she could just see the people. It was a group of men, they looked in their thirties and appeared drunk. She started to become hysterical, what if they were getting the bus somewhere? What would they do to her? This is what she had been praying wouldn’t happen. She shrunk down again thinking. Would they see her if she ran? She knew that they would. It was a wide alley and it stretched across the whole bus stop. They would see her no matter which way she ran. She sat there for what seemed like hours, waiting for her fate. She was frozen to the spot.
The crowd sounded like they were beginning to grow rowdier. She lifted her head up until she could just see the gang of men. They were shouting at each other, but she couldn’t make out what they were saying, as they were too far away and their words were slurred. She couldn’t move her eyes, they were transfixed on the group of men. Then suddenly one of the men pushed one of the other men and before she even realised it, they were fighting. One man was hitting another.
There were about five of them, she wasn’t sure if they were all fighting each other or if they were just beating up one man. One of them was thrown against the wall and she felt a shudder go down her spine as she heard him crack against the stone. The man scrambled up and started shouting at the one of the others, he then punched him and the man was down again. She wasn’t sure if he was going to get up again after that. What is going to happen to this man? Are they just going to leave him there?
She suddenly heard one of the words they were saying “Cocaine!” they were drug dealers! She realised now how serious this was, she was frightened before, but now she felt so sick she thought might throw up. Her head was spinning round and round she felt dizzy like she might just collapse.
Then in the moon light she saw a flicker of metal, she gasped and stumbled backwards she saw all the men look around and she ducked from site. Holding her breath as though one little sound could kill her. The men turned their attention back to themselves. It had gone quiet, and she was crouched there motionless. The man was now talking in a whisper and holding the knife to the other mans throat. He seemed to be talking for ages before the other man finally spoke. He kicked the man with the knife, in the leg and attempted to make a run for it.
A rush of relief ran through Danni’s body. The man ran after took hold of the knife and thrust the knife into the man’s back! He fell to the floor with a loud thud. Danni wanted to scream, but it just caught in her throat, the gang of men had another quick look around then ran the opposite way from the bus stop out of the alley. Danni was so petrified she could barely breathe, she knew that she had to move or get help or something! She just couldn’t get her body to move.
She started to run towards the man, but then stopped. Should she just go and get help or see if he is dead first? She approached the man cautiously and peered at him lying in the floor. At first she couldn’t bring herself to touch him, but she forced herself to feel his wrist for a pulse. He was still alive. This spurred her to run as fast as she could to the nearest house. She stumbled at the gate, fiddling with the lock and banged on the door, no-one answered, she kept banging and banging till her hand started to bleed from banging on the edge of the door. A man came to the door in a dressing gown and gave her a frown>
“There’s a man in the alley, he’s just been stabbed,” she gasped between breaths before she collapsed in a heap on the floor.
The next thing she heard was “She’s coming round,” it was her mum and Dad. She opened her eyes, she was in a hospital bed.
“Are you ok love?” asked her Mum “Do remember what happened?”
Danni nodded her head.
“What’s happened to the man in the alley?” she croaked.
“He’s alive, just, you saved his life, if he had been left any longer he would have died,” soothed her mum, “You were very brave. Just think, all this happened while you were waiting for the bus.
Her mum continued to tell her how she should have rung her for a lift, and for her never to scare her like that again, but Danni just blocked it out, closed her eyes and fell asleep.
