Reading the title of the case, I would think it’d be about bears, however it was one of the most confusing murder cases in history. The Bear Brook murders were female murder victims, two being discovered in 1985 and the other two in 2000, at Bear Brook State Park in Allenstown, New Hampshire. All four bodies were mutilated and partially skeletonized; believed to have died anywhere from 1977 to 1981. Thanks to always improving technology, Terry Rasmuessen has been identified as the murderer, and sentenced to death.
This case was especially stomach-churning because of how long it took to identify Terry and how no one ever knew anything about him. He could have killed so many more people and no one would ever know. Another strange detail of this case was how there was never any missing person reports documented for any of the victims. After listening to all the podcasts I started thinking more and more about the case.
One thought that kept popping into my head was how many more cases are there like this that no one knows about.
I live by tons of field, thousands of acres covered in long grass, trees, and ponds and everytime I drive past or through them I think about if there are any barrels or bodies in those fields, hidden, waiting to be found. This case made me feel as if I didn’t really know truly know anyone, I only know their surface information and what they want me to know.
I might have come across murdered in my lifetime but would never have any idea because in reality what do you really know about a person.
Yes, this podcast has made me want to start listening in on more podcasts. They are really interesting and full of information waiting to be heard and absorbed. All in all, listening to the Bear Brook podcasts in class was entertaining and made me think about stuff I hadn’t been thinking about before and has inspired me to listen to more podcasts.
Genetic Genealogy is the use of Genealogical DNA tests, i.e. DNA profiling and DNA testing in combination with traditional genealogical methods, to infer biological relationships between individuals. Genetic genealogy involves the use of genealogical DNA testing to determine the level and type of the genetic relationship between individuals.
This process was used in solving this case when the authorities were able to match DNA strands of one of the victims to Terry Rasmussen, who was also connected to the disappearance of victim Denise Beaudin and her daughter. After already being a suspect then having DNA similarities with one of the victims made it obvious to the police that Terry had murdered all four of these women.
Justice was served for Terry. In 2010 he was put to death after receiving the death penalty for mudering at least 4 women. It is harsh to take a life but he himself had no problem in taking multiple lives without regard, and if he wasn’t killed then he would’ve killed more people after being released from prison, or he would’ve caused issue with other prisoners. Obviously you can’t say that someone deserves the death penalty because no one deserves to be killed but he was a killer, he enjoyed killing people, he wanted to.
