Using your prescribed text and a text of your own choosing explain how text present distinctively visual images and how these images shape meaning in the texts The text of my own choosing is “The Coral See” which conveys many distinctive experiences typical of the Great Barrier Reef. This visual uses a variety of techniques to visually represent the connection humankind has with nature and the serenity of nature.
A text relating to “The Coral See” is Henry Lawson’s “In a Dry Season”, where many distinctive experiences of the Australian bush are conveyed.
Similar to “The Coral See” Lawson’s “In a Dry Season” has many techniques which help to visually portray the distinctive experiences in the story such as the hardships faced by people in the bush and the similarities or sameness of the bush. One distinctive experience presented in “The Coral See” is that of the connection between mankind and nature.
Firstly the positioning of the couple in the visual is one technique which shows the connection mankind has with nature, by highlighting the people’s importance in the text through positioning we are able to see how people work with nature to ensure its preservation as well as enjoying the beauty of nature as well.
The use of background is also a key technique in the text to show the connection between mankind and nature.
For example, in the image, the land in the background is undeveloped which allows the reader to attribute this to the will of mankind to preserve the reef and in doing so allowing mankind to be rewarded with the benefits of the reef.
Therefore we are able to establish that the background is a key technique which shows the connection between mankind and nature. Another technique which emphasises the strong connection is the use of salient imagery.
In the text the salient image is the people, and the use of this image represents the power mankind has over nature, but also shows that mankind isn’t willing to demonstrate their power because they don’t want to damage the reef and the ecosystem around it. Therefore through the use of the salient image the connection between mankind and nature is further highlighted. From the techniques in “The Coral See” it’s evident how the distinctive experiences of the connection between nature and mankind occur.
One distinctive experience Lawson presents in “In a Dry Season” is that of the hardships faced by people in the bush. Lawson uses emotive words and adjectives to portray the image of the hardships faced by people in the bush, for example in the Quote “we crossed the Macquarie a narrow muddy gutter with a dog swimming across” we can see how Lawson depicts the brutal aspects of the bush, which then allows us to establish a sens of sympathy for people living in the bush.
Lawson highlights those traits he views as honourable through his characterisations, and allows the actions of the “quiet looking bushman….. who took the liar down in three minutes” to show his sympathy for hardworking bush people as opposed to city “dwellers” , however through the accumulation of Lawson’s characters through characterisation we can see how Lawson depicts the bush and also how he depicts the hardships faced by these characters through either theft, death or other circumstances , therefore allowing us to establish the hardships face by people living in the bush.
The use of third person narration in the text also allows us to see Lawson’s view point, and as he passes each town and describes each character, the hardships faced by people accumulate and evidently allow us to understand the hardships faced by people in the bush, therefore allowing Lawson to formulate these ideas about the hardships faced by people in the bush. Ultimately from these techniques we are able to establish how Lawson shows the distinctive experiences of the hardships people face in the bush.
Another distinctive experience conveyed in “The Coral See” is the serenity of nature. One technique used to emphasise the serenity of nature in the visual is the use of colour and its connotations. The colour blue is predominantly used in this visual to convey through its connotations how the visual conveys its peacefulness and beauty, which ultimately allows the reader to establish the distinctive experience of the serenity of nature.
Another technique is the use of vectors in portraying the serenity of nature through the ocean. There are many different vectors in the image but the main vector is created by the coral which spreads diagonally across the image, this draws your attention away from where the waves are breaking and focuses on the still water to further emphasise the serenity of the ocean. Finally the use of contrast between the land and water and how they work together in harmony further emphasises the serenity of nature in this image.
Therefore from these techniques we are able to establish how the distinct experience of the serenity of nature is achieved. Another distinctive experience Lawson presents in “In a Dry Season” is that of the sameness of the bush. Firstly one technique that emphasises the sameness in the bush is the use of descriptive language, for example in the quote “Draw a wire and a few ragged gums….. then you’ll have the bush all along the New South Wales western line from Bathurst on” where Lawson uses descriptive language to convey the sameness of the bush.
Another technique which emphasises the sameness of the bush is the use of accumulation of characters. The accumulation of characters in “In a Dry Season” helps Lawson convey the sameness of the bush by highlighting that each character was found in each town which ultimately shows the monotonous style of the bush. Finally another technique which shows the sameness of the bush is the. Finally another technique which conveys the sameness of the bush is the use of adjectives and emotive words.
When Lawson talks about the towns he visits he uses negatively connatated emotive words as well as adjectives to display how monotonous and one sided life in the bush and the actual bush is. For example in the quote “The railway stores only seem to exist in the shadow of the pub…. from its half obliterated sign, seems to have started as a rival to the railway store” shows how Lawson compares each town to being the same but also compares the building towards one another referring them as dilapidated and undeveloped.
Therefore from these techniques we can see how the distinctive experience of the sameness of the bush is represented in the bush. Therefore we can see from the techniques that convey the distinctive experiences how both texts relate to one another by the way they convey their distinctively visual aspect weather it be the relationship between mankind and nature, the serenity of nature, the hardships faced by people in the bush or the sameness of the bush.
