This week’s readings had the themes of prejudice and oppression. These themes are displayed in “The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master’s Hous” + “Age, Race, Sex, Class” and “The Uses of Anger” in “Sister Outsider” by Audre Lorde, “If Men Could Menstruate” by Gloria Steinem and “Real Women Have Bodies” by Machado. 2017. In Lorde’s speeches she addresses the absolute essential of intersectional feminism, equality for women of color and the significance of women using their voice to speak up for their rights of intersectional feminism up against injustice.
Her writing goes deep into the composition of racism and sexism and offers many solutions for every women to follow under male dominated society.
Themes of racism and sexism and all her emotions are portrayed in the writings where she takes out her anger while expressing herself. In Master’s tools essay, she has a unique perspective that we all should not be grouped together instead women should find strength in their differences and from their come together and fight for the positive change.
Everyone has their own strength and weakness, one woman’s weakness can be another woman’s strength.
Woman need to find the strength to open up about a topic like this instead of turning away and then unity is needed in the female community no matter size, color, or ethnicity. In “The uses of Anger” Lorde focuses on how emotion of anger in a women toward these topics can be very powerful and useful in fighting for justice. Steinem’s article is very interesting where she writes on how it would be different if men went through menstruation rather than women.
It would be very different, it would be known as a manly process and there would be nothing “disgusting” about it compared to what a women has to go through every month and it is viewed as part of a female’s lifestyle. Many do not understand the pain a woman goes through every month for around 5 to 7 days. Steinem’s states how would it look if men had to go through it, “The answer is clear, menstruation would become an enviable, boastworthy, masculine event.” She states that women aren’t allowed to have a conversation freely about their period but if it was men that had to go through the same process, they would have full freedom to discuss it and it would be totally be a normal aspect of life.
Also, it is frowned up by some people and culture to talk about menstruation and is kept to themselves as if it is a secret. The menstruation cycle is almost considered as “taboo” because the menstrual cycle is unclean or embarrassing. If there is blood on the figure, most people wouldn’t have a strong reaction to that but hearing that a woman is on her period triggers some people because it is in a area which some may not like to talk about openly. This article mainly display the sense of acceptance on how every woman should know their role and know how to act when they are on their period. It’s an idea she wants us to think about that if the role was switched, would the men be treated the same as how women are treated now in society? In simpler words, it’s unfair for all the womens and what they have to go through and they still aren’t treated equally or can behave the same as men.
Finally, we have Machado article where she directly focuses on violence that society put on women bodies and how they silently deal with it. Sexism isn’t something that people focus on their daily life, it is being ignored as women are expected to be polite and just deal with the situation in respectful manner. Machado shares many stories where women are victims of domestic violence and their also blamed for the violence. It doesn’t make sense but it’s the reality and it’s taking too long for people to realize that women is the ones who gives birth to new generation and without them the world would be a whole new place.
The author’s point is that people have to realize that women suffer lot of pain and there are those women’s who are suffering both racism and sexism simultaneously. In today’s society, we see culture plays a major role when discussion is raised on this topic. Mothers and daughters seem to have a stronger connection in a topic like menstruation because they both understand each other. Depending on the upbringings of the family, mothers may advise daughters to not to tell their siblings or specifically brothers or friends who are boys because the menstruation cycle is feminine and private that men shouldn’t know about.
