Food has always been an important part of my life, as obviously it is important as a matter of life and death, but also as it can make life so much more enjoyable. Food has always been a key part of my life, but as a younger child I was always much fussier as to what I ate. Since I started been more adventurous with foods, I always like to try new flavours, spicier curries and more exotic taste sensations. Food has never been a struggle for me, although I have only liked a few foods as a younger child.
I have never worried about what I eat, and I feel that people worry too much about what we eat, yes we should be conscious but there is a level when people have to accept that we should be able to eat what we want. That has always been my thought and I’m sure I will always believe that.
A Taste Of Childhood
A food that springs to mind about my childhood instantly is mushy peas.
My favourite food for what must have been two years, I am instantly able to remember it now because of the sheer hatred I have for mushy peas now. Those sneaky green peas, trying to hide themselves between your chips. Don’t think I don’t see you there trying to ruin my wonderful meal, and vinegar. Even worse for hiding between your chips, almost unnoticeable until you taste its bitter flavour, and yet I used to love it.
Another taste I used to love and now detest is jam. As a young boy the coming home from nursery or school to a freshly toasted thick slice of bread, smothered in the sugary taste sensation that is strawberry jam. At first the taste hits you of the warming softness of the bread, and then that gorgeous sharp strawberry flavour soothes into your mouth. When I recently tried what was once my favourite flavour, all that I could conjure was that how on earth did I used to like that. It’s old, sharp, fruity taste felt bitter and unappealing.
A Taste Of Family
Two foods spring instantly to mind and leave me drooling when I think of what I eat with my family. Roast Dinner, and my Auntie’s chicken curry. Never once have I eaten either of these meals without at least 5 family members, and these are almost certainly my two favourite meals.
In my family, mealtimes are a time that we get together and talk about what’s happened during the day. We all sit down and talk while roping into whatever meals In front of us.
Chicken Curry. Surely it is the best flavour in the world. But one vital matter is that bit of spice, a bit of chilli thrown into the pot always works a treat. The initial fruity flavour of all the extra ingredients put into my aunties pan, and then the instant kick of the spice hits you, the rich flavour of mango chutney combined with the flavoured naan bread, or texture of the freshly boiled rice, is enough to make anybody drool. But not only is it the curry that makes eating at my Auntie’s such a pleasure, but the dessert.
The first dessert that springs to mind at the thought of a family pudding is my cousin’s chocolate brownies. A taste that I am sure I could always eat, the rich chocolaty flavour combined with the smooth texture of the freshly baked base. They even look like perfection, presented on a plate stacked like a pyramid, drizzled over with icing sugar for that professional touch.
The other food of my family has to be the roast dinner, whether Christmas or birthdays, lamb, pork or beef. It is always an absolute delight to eat. All the combined flavours packed together create surely the greatest meal and taste ever made. Whether it is any of the three above meats, or my personal favourite that is a chicken dinner, it is always a true family meal. Potatoes are another vital factor. Roast, boiled or mashed they never fail to spark your taste buds, combined with a light herbing of garlic or mint really kicks the meal up to the level of great. Obviously a bit of green (or orange) is important, I’m not too keen on vegetables but throwing a bit of carrot and peas onto the plate just makes it that traditional roast dinner.
Now for me, meat is the most important part of a roast dinner, and it always has been. The succulent roast fresh out of the oven always tastes phenomenal, whether it is the dark look of beef or lamb, or the lighter colour and texture of chicken or pork, I will still always love it. My mother’s chicken dinner is a meal to die for, everything is cooked with such effort, and it is normally only eaten on special occasions, it is that good. The one part that makes it something special is the gravy. The gravy is always the perfect texture and flavour, the juice from the roast of the meat combined with all the other vital ingredients from a good gravy is just the greatest way to make a roast dinner incredible.
A Taste Of Friendship
My friendship food might not be healthy or good for providing all the nutrition I need, but whenever I eat it, it is always with my friends and it always reminds me of my friends. The first meal that springs to my mind is hot roast meat sandwiches from a shop in town. A choice of any meat, or speciality meat of the day always lures me and my friends to its delicious smell. Tucking into the roast beef sandwich, with a small quantity of gravy, just to kick it a little bit, the taste you get hits your mouth and always makes you want more. It is a flavour that is amazing and always fulfils the rich taste of your mouth.
Another food that is even unhealthier is the burgers down at the seafront. The guilt you should get while eating them instantly disappears when you get its plain yet lovable flavour. The flavour is bland and to be honest not very appealing, but just the feeling of tucking into a burger is enough to make me want one. When going into town, we always end up arriving outside the burger bar at the seafront ordering four burgers with onions.
A Taste Of The Future
What will I be eating in the future has always come across my mind, will the world turn to only organic food. Salad replacing roast lamb, fruit for a traditional Sunday breakfast instead of a full English. What’s going to happen is a weird thing to think about. But I know one thing, that I will always, always keep eating meat dinners, bacon sandwiches and anything involving chicken. Whatever happens I am positive they will always be my favourite food, and all I can say about the future is that I hope the future generations aren’t deprived of the mass array of tastes and rich flavours that we had today.
The other side to the story is that we might forget all about healthy eating, costs may become the priority and food might get worse and worse until the sausages are about 10% meat. What’s going to happen no one knows, but the equilibrium we’re at now should stay forever. It provides the perfect choice for anyone to choose, whether they always want to eat healthy or whether they aren’t bothered about what they eat, it is their choice, and it should always remain that way.
Final Feast
My final feast would be the perfect combination of three completely different meals, each in their own right amazing and exciting, yet each with a different array of flavours and spices.
My starter would be roast duck, glazed with an orange flavoured sauce. A full roast duck is always a sight for my sore eyes, and the flavour that follows doesn’t disappoint. It’s incredibly smooth texture for meat is amazing, and the sharp, yet soft flavour of the sauce that accompanies it keeps the sensation in the category of fantastic food.
My main course would be chicken fajitas, with spicy tomato flavour. Another meal that is always made with family, it is the perfect combination of spice and flavour. Small chunks of chicken thrown into the pan with a combination of peppers and other veg. Then added the tomato sauce, the chilli and the marinade powder for the chicken, each slightly spicy and packed with a powerful flavour. Although the inside spicy chicken is the most important taste, with the biggest impact, another vital part is the outside.
Whether wraps, or pita bread, they must be toasted warm and served while still mild. That is a key factor that my family never fail to disappoint with. The initial flavour of chicken fajitas is that of a smooth texture, the spice then makes contact with your taste and sends down a flavour that can only be described as amazing. The warm exterior and the spicy hot interior combine to be surely one of my favourite dishes.
My dessert is a difficult one; it would have to be a selection of a few of my personal favourites. First in the ‘pudding line-up’ would be my cousin’s chocolate brownies, as previously described. Served alongside that would be a selection of ice cream. Ben & Jerry’s cookie dough is a favourite of mine, combining all the textures that you want in your ice cream, and another of my favourite is Haagen-Dazs strawberry ice cream. It is the perfect flavour of strawberry ice cream, and the little pieces of strawberry are particularly enjoyable.
The final part of the dessert would most definitely be fruit salad. Strawberries, oranges, apples, peaches, kiwi, banana and mangos. Fruits that mixed together create the nicest, sweet taste in the world. But it is not just the fruit that make it amazing, but also the juice at the end. Yes, I like it so much that I poured the juice into a pint glass and drank it all! The perfect combination of sweet flavours and different textures are enough to say that we are only allowed a proper fruit salad on very special occasions, but by gosh is it worth the wait.
