Discuss About The Journal Network And Computer Applications.
Cloud computing indicates to the delivery of various computing services. This includes analytics, software, networking, databases, storages and servers on the Internet. There is no doubt that companies have been gaining huge profits through cloud computing.
Besides, it has been coming up with many drawbacks also. Businesses need to take time in order to understand the various advantages and disadvantages of the technology. This helps to get most out of their business technology irrespective of the cloud chosen.
In the following study, the project scopes and objectives regarding research on different advantages and disadvantages of cloud computing are chosen. Various prior published literature are reviewed here and lastly, a conclusion is drawn highlighting the findings retrieved from the overall discussion.
In this project there are various things that are needed to be considered while making a decision for using cloud storage services various top IT professionals are dedicated to engaging their energy and time to assure that the data is secured and safe. The various objectives of the following research are highlighted below.
Here, the project scope is restricted to the peripheral computing complexity and business. It must provide the business with a clear understanding of various challenges. The research also has a wider coverage useful both in this current digital world. For example, a recent survey has shown that above 800 business decision makers and users have gained a huge competitive advantage through this innovation. Further, cloud adoption has doubled in the past few years. The study is very much significant due to the fact that the present state of cloud computing and issues have been affecting the adoptions. However, the report must show that cloud computing would never be of an utmost solution to every business IT needs. Besides, the paper must deliver a holistic view of cloud computing impacting the business enterprise compared to conventional IT solutions.
Cloud computing is present for almost two decades. Despite that, the data has been pointing to different business efficiencies, cost benefits and competitive benefits. As per the research conducted by International Data Group, about 70% of the businesses are utilizing cloud technology and about 18% of them have planned to implement the solutions at any point. Simultaneously, Dell has reported that organizations investing security, mobility, cloud and big data has been enjoying up to 50% of quicker growth in revenue than that of their competitors. According to this data, the rise in a number of tech-savvy business and leaders of the industry has determined various trends of cloud computing. However, Avram (2014) states that this technology has been used more effectively in running organizations better serving their customers and drastically raising the overall margins of profit. These factors have seemed to indicate that as provided with an apparent direction where industries are moving, there has never been any better period to get into the cloud. The term “cloud computing” has gained a widespread usage in the past few years. The data in use has been rising exponentially and accompanied transition of the society into the 21st century of the digital world as shown by Rittinghouse and Ransome (2016). Thus it has turned out to be more complex for companies and individuals to keep every important information, systems and programs running and up over in-house computer servers. Here, the solution to the problem is that Internet has not been present there for long. However, it has recently gained widespread application as per as business is concerned.
The cloud computing technology has been operating on the same guideline as that of web-based email clients. It has been allowing users to access every features and file of the system instead of having to keep a bulk of that system over their individual computers. For all the beneficial services of cloud, users have been sending their personal information to servers hosted by clouds. It has been hosting information for later access. Sadiku, Musa and Momoh (2014) mentions that, since these applications have been for personal use, they have been more valuable for business needing to access the huge quantity of data over a secured online network. For instance, the employees are able to access customer data through CRM software that are based in the cloud such as Salesforce from their tablet or smartphone at home or during travel. This helps them share the data quickly with additional authorized parties from any place in the world. However, Botta et al. (2016) mentioned that there are many leaders who have been hesitating to make a commitment towards various solutions for their business.
The first advantage of cloud computing is saving the costs. One the business is in a cloud they can gain easy access to data of the company and save time and money in the start-ups of the project. The pay-as-you-go system is applicable to the space for data storage required to serve clients and stakeholders. The next benefit is the security. González-Martínez et al. (2015) highlighted that this is helpful to protect the programs, files and additional data that are not kept securely in a cloud. The job of cloud’s host is to monitor the security carefully that has been more effective than a traditional in-house system. Here the organizations should divide their efforts between myriad IT concerns where security is a part. RapidScale has claimed that about 90% of business has witnessed development in security after they switch to cloud and the same percentage said that the cloud has made them easier to meet various requirements about government compliance as mentioned in the article of Ahmed and Hossain (2014).
The next benefit of cloud computing is flexibility As the present IT solutions force the business to undertake extreme attention to computer and data storage issues, they can be unable to focus on reaching business goals and satisfy customers. Yan et al. (2016) write that the next advantage of the cloud is mobility. It allows mobile access to corporate information through smart phones and devices. With the help of cloud, one can offer conveniently accessible data to various sales staff for a better balance of work-life. As per the business, insights are considered by Ali, Khan and Vasilakos (2015), with the data stored in a cloud, one can the implement tracking mechanisms and create customized reports to monitor information around the organization. Moreover, the cloud also helps in rising in collaboration. Besides cloud also help in a rising in collaboration. Team members are able to see and share data securely and easily around cloud platform.
With all the people analyzing the same data, one can maintain data consistency, avoid human error and acquire a clear record of updates or revisions. When it comes to disaster recovery, one is the factors that have been contributing to the success of a business is the control. In the current market a small quantity of unproductive downtime has a resoundingly adverse impact. According to Marinescu (2017), about 20% of cloud users have been claiming disaster recovery within 4 hours or in less time. Here only 9% of the non-cloud users have been claiming the same. As per as a current survey, found in the article of Jo et al. (2015), 40% of the IT executives revealed that they have planned to invest or develop loud-based solutions for disaster recovery.
Apart from all this cloud is beneficial for loss prevention. As the business is not in the cloud, the company is at risk to lose all the information that is locally saved. Along with a cloud-server, all information uploaded to the cloud stays safe and easily accessible from any computer with Internet connection. Further, a cloud is also helpful for automatic software upgrades states Yan and Yu (2015). It saves expensive money and time of IT employees that are spent on IT consultation. As listed by PCWorld about 50% of cloud adapters cited needs some internal IT resources as cloud benefit.
Furthermore, cloud is helpful as per competitive edge is concerned. As cloud is rising in popularity, there are still who has preferred to keep all the things local. As one implements cloud-based solution prior their competitors in market, one can further go along the learning curve by time they catch up. For instance a very recent survey of Verizon study found in the article of Whaiduzzaman et al. (2014), highlighted that about 77% of business has felt that cloud technology has provided them with competitive benefit and 16% has believed that the advantage has been very important. Lastly, the cloud has been highly beneficial as per sustainability is considered. Provided with the present of environment, it has been no longer sufficient for business to place a smart recycle-bin within the break room and claimed that they have been performing their responsibilities to help the society. Here, real sustainability has been needing solutions that denote wastefulness at all business levels. It must be reminded that hosting over cloud has been very much friendly for the environment. This it has been resulting in less carbon footprint. Cloud infrastructures have been supporting proactively. It has been empowering virtual services instead of hardware and physical products. It has been cutting down paper wastes and developing energy efficiency with a reduction in commuter-related emissions. According to the research conducted by Samanthula et al. (2015) the Poke Research report, has predicted that consumption of data center has dropped by 31% from 2010 to 2920. It has been based on the adoption of cloud computing and additional other virtual data options.
The accessibility and convenience of a cloud have resulted from many business people to adopt the content management model. It has caused many companies to implement cloud computing model and implement the capabilities institutionally. However, there have been various drawbacks of cloud computing that are needed to be considered proper considering the steps. Here the risks of insecure interfaces and theft of account credentials have been raising mentions Jararweh et al. (2014). This occurs while depending on cloud computing for the data and content management needs. As the organizations have been working on proper cloud computing consultant, one must be able to help to avoid all the viable concerns has been always vital to assure the proper consultant for the job.
The first disadvantage of a cloud as shown by Arpaci (2016) is the abuse done by thieves and hackers. They have been taking benefits of vulnerabilities of computing services that are cloud-based. For example, encryption keys have been easy to break than they have been as the information stored simply in computers or any physical data center. Further, the cloud providers have been also vulnerable to those elements such as malware attacks as highlighted by Calero and Aguado (2015). While storing, accessing and working with and collaborating on cloud’s contents, it is vital to be aware of the threats that have been out there.
The next problem is the data breach. The companies should be more specifically concerned regarding data breaches within their system of a cloud. It is identified by cloud security alliance that the data has been the most important threat to cloud security till last few years, stated Serrano, Gallardo and Hernantes (2015). As the business thinks that the hackers are interested in stealing most of the complex data, one must carefully think about the options before storing that within the cloud.
Then the most important has been the DoS of Denial Service. It is a huge threat for companies depending on cloud services for the current world. Particular vulnerabilities of services of cloud computing have been making that simple for attackers to flood their network with various connection requests till it has been no more functioning for their end users, as analyzed by Madni, Latiff and Coulibaly (2016). There have been all kinds of malicious of malicious entities present there. Moreover, it has been present among their competition who has wanted to see the service decline. This has been a problem for various cloud data centers that has not seemed to slow down.
Further, Shiraz et al. (2014) there have been various lacks due diligence. It has been often avoidable and has been far as too many companies have been falling into the trap of under-preparedness as they move towards to clouds. The reason is that they never know what to expect and what they have been getting into. It has been vital to know what the risks has been and what the potential benefits have been. This also includes various options under the spectrum of cloud services. As one needs to switch their data to cloud-based platforms to seek what has been going against their contractual conflicts or obligations with their operational functions. However, many companies have been doing that as they fail to do that has been because of their due diligence prior getting to the cloud.
Moreover, Sheikhi et al. (2015) discusses that the cloud computing has been leading to loss of data. The businesses need to worry regarding hackers altering and stealing data. Further, they have been worrying about data to get destroyed and been lost, this has been keeping a trace in this world. There have been various reputable providers of cloud service offering ,top-notch protection from their data loss. However, there have been still many kinds of errors that might take place. Here, the most common reasons for data loss have been just because of human mistakes. It has been making a good cause to back up every data on physical devices prior they work on that in the cloud.
Apart from this, González-Martínez (2015) writes that there have been various spiteful activities. It has been one of the most unfortunate drawbacks of cloud computing. This provides the potential for a various spiteful individual to do damages. It has been very hard to do with physical servers. Moreover, there are various former employees, unhappy contractors, disgruntled employees, displeased business partners and also industry insiders who have been working for competitions who are interested to hard the system, network and data. This type of malicious activity has been going far very often than most of the people can imagine. Lastly, Marinescu (2017) states that there has been a presence of weakness of various shared technologies. The cloud computing has been posing potential weakness which most of the conventional computing models has not been possessing. Here the vulnerabilities of a technology of cloud computing system have been stemming from usage of shared infrastructures, platforms and applications.
First of all, a hybrid approach must be considered for a start. Various enterprises users and applications have not been fully ready for the cloud. However, there have been still various methods of leveraging the advantages of the cloud. The agencies must be migrating towards cloud through a hybrid approach and start in a simple way instead of going all in. They can start with any department. This can be the IT itself for seeing the bad or good or might be some users and applications. Further, there are very efficient vendors helping organizations to deploy that approach mentions Ahmed et al. (2015). Moreover, businesses should try to stay away from those vendors who have been there for short term. Here, a cloud is a latest innovation and business must stick to that which would bring those benefits in long-term.
Next, the businesses should be a focus on policy-based intelligence, security and management. Here, the cloud deployments have been including focus to manage a data center, networks, devices and users. Further, they should ensure access control, authorization and authentication. All these must be done in an integrated way. Additionally, Fortino et al. (2014) demonstrate that they must be assuring a contextual intelligence or location-based services. This would be very must vital for a cloud. Here, the users must query regarding how they must achieve the outcomes of those searches and the delivery of applications.
Further, an open-standard methodology is vital as mentioned by Madni, Latiff and Coulibaly (2016). The open standards are the critical aspects towards the success in cloud computing. Companies should deploy the cloud solution for their organization. They must keep in mind that their companies might get sold or they can hire new people having distinct perspectives on cloud and changes in the business model. The public cloud, all of a sudden might not be suitable and need to bring that data returned to the private cloud. One can move from the cloud back to the methodologies of cloud servers.
Conclusion:
The report helps in understanding that despite the fact that drawbacks of cloud computing is worthy and have their own future prospects. The organizations who need to create their individual identity should be switching to the cloud must control the new challenges for their future. The above report shows that more one grows, more they should be attracting. Hence to offer better, different fine-tuned resolutions and services must be valuable for the customers. This must help to go live to cloud. It can be concluded that cloud technology has been proving a huge resource for the business. However, it can damage or behave in an odd manner as it is misunderstood or not taken seriously. This is the reason why so many popular organizations of the current era like IBM, Netflix, Microsoft, Coca-Cola, Google and Amazon has entrusted cloud. Here the effective drawbacks are to transfer to a cloud. This can be neutralized with the knowledge that is needed by the company and appropriate research about Cloud Company. For the best-suited company, cloud helps in saving time with the minimal disadvantages. The report clearly shows that without any doubt, the cloud computing has blessed the IT field with new innovation.
