Albert Fish is known for being one of the vilest pedophiles and child serial killers and cannibal of all time. After his capture he admitted to molesting over 400 children and tortured and killed several others, however, it was not known if his statement was truthful. He was also known as the Gray Man, the Werewolf of Wysteria, the Brooklyn Vampire, the Moon Maniac, and The Boogey Man. Fish was a small, gentle-looking man who appeared kind and trusting, yet once alone with his victims, the monster inside him was unleashed; a monster so perverse and cruel, his crimes seem unbelievable.
Albert Fish was born on May 19, 1870, in Washington D.C., to Randall and Ellen Fish. Fish’s family had a long history of mental illness. His uncle was diagnosed with mania. He had a brother that was sent to a state mental institution and his sister was diagnosed with a “mental affliction” Ellen Fish had visual hallucinations. His parents abandoned him at a young age and he was sent to an orphanage.
The orphanage was, in Fish’s memory, a place of brutality where he was exposed to regular beatings and sadistic acts of brutality. It was said that he began to look forward to the abuse because it brought him pleasure. When asked about the orphanage, Fish remarked, “I was there ’til I was nearly nine, and that’s where I got started wrong. By 1880, Ellen Fish, now a widow, had a government job and was able to remove Fish, at the age of 12, from the orphanage.
He had very little formal education and grew up learning to work more with his hands than his brains. (C. Montaldo, Biography of Serial killer Albert Fish) Albert’s crimes in 1890 he relocated to New York City and began his crimes against children. He made money working as a prostitute and began to molest boys. He would lure children away from their homes, torture them in various ways, including his favorite, the use of a paddle laced with sharp nails, then rape them. As time went on, the sexual fantasies he would act out on the children grew more fiendish and bizarre, and often ended in murdering and cannibalizing his young victims. In 1898 he married and later fathered six children. The children led average lives up until 1917 after Fish’s wife ran off with another man. It was at that time the children recall Fish occasionally asking them to participate in his sadomasochistic games. One game included the nail-filled paddle Fish used on his victims. He would ask the children to paddle him with the weapon until blood ran down his legs. He also found enjoyment from pushing needles deep into his skin. After his marriage ended, Fish spent time writing to women listed in the personal columns of newspapers. In his letters, he would go into graphic detail of sexual acts he would like to share with the women. The descriptions of these acts were so vile and disgusting that they were never made public even though they were submitted as evidence in court. On June 3rd, 1928, when Fish came to pick Edward up for the job, he met Grace and his supposed plans quickly changed. He informed the family that his sister was having a birthday party for one of her children and that he had to be leaving. He invited Grace to come to the party with him, and that was the last time the Budd family saw Grace. To this day it remains a mystery of how many children Fish actually killed. However, it is believed that he had anywhere from five to fifteen victims that he followed through with killing. When the crime scene of Fish’s house was processed, over fifty legs, fingers, and various other bones were found. (C. Montaldo, Biography of Serial killer Albert Fish) Alberts punishment On March 11, 1935, Fish’s trial began and he pleads innocent by the reason of insanity. He said there were voices in his head telling him to kill children that made him do such horrendous crimes. Despite the numerous psychiatrists who described Fish as insane, the jury found him sane and guilty after a short 10-day trial. He was sentenced to die by electrocution. On January 16, 1936, Albert Fish was electrocuted at Sing Sing prison, reportedly a process Fish looked upon as “the ultimate sexual thrill” but later dismissed as just a rumor. Fish, smiling as he described the grizzly details of the tortures and murders, appeared to the detectives as the devil himself. (c. Montaldo) John Wayne Gacy was an American serial killer and rapist who took the lives of at least thirty-three young males in Cook County, Illinois, burying most under his home. Gacey had an abusive childhood and struggled with his sexuality. After being convicted of sexual assault in 1968, his murders were uncovered. He was released on parole in the summer of 1970 but was arrested again the following year after another teen accused Gacey of sexual assault. The charges were dropped when the boy didn’t appear during the trial. By the middle of the decade, two more young males accused Gacey of rape, and he would be questioned by police about the disappearances of others. The heavy-set serial killer came under suspicion in December 1978 when authorities investigating the disappearance of Robert Priest discovered that the teen was last seen with Gacey. After learning of Gacy’s sex-crime conviction in Iowa, police searched his Norwood Park home. They noticed a strong stench coming from a crawl space but at first thought, it was from a damaged sewage pipe. Several items, including a store receipt, were later found at Gacy’s home that linked him to the priest and other young men who’d been reported missing. After Gacey confessed, investigators recovered 29 corpses buried on his property, as well as four more that he’d dumped in nearby rivers when he ran out of the room at home. After his conviction, Gacey spent 14 years on Death Row, during which time he made paintings of clowns and other figures that sold for thousands of dollars. On May 10, 1994, having exhausted all his appeals, the 52-year-old Gacey, who the media dubbed the Killer Clown, was put to death by legal injection at the Stateville Penitentiary in Joliet, Illinois. John’ Punishments on December 11, 1978, 15-year-old Robert Priest went missing. On December 21, a police search of Gacy’s house in Norwood Park Township, Illinois, uncovered evidence of his involvement in numerous horrific acts, including murder. It was later discovered that Gacey had committed his first known killing in 1972, taking the life of Timothy McCoy after luring the teen to his home. As both anti-death penalty forces and those in favor of the execution made their opinions known, John Wayne Gacy died by lethal injection on May 10, 1994, at the Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill, Illinois.
