An expat in a new school Free Essay Example

I never thought of myself being an immigrant and joining the high school in a new country. I remember I would watch movies in order to see how American high schools looked like. I was so excited because I thought that life is the same everywhere you go. I didn’t think that language played an important role. It wasn’t until I joined high school and realized how important language was. Being passionate is one of the things that kept me going and staying motivated by an English teacher.

September 13, 2017, was the first time I entered high school. I was so nervous at first because I didn’t know anybody and I had this thought running my mind what will people say about my color. But nothing of that kind happened. I was warmly welcomed and directed to my classes. It was tough for the first days but all I did was just try my best. I never asked any questions about any problem because I thought maybe people won’t know what I’m trying to imply or what I’m trying to say.

I remember when someone came to and could ask where I’m I from, I could pull a piece of paper and write on it. They could scoff at me but I kept my head up and keep doing work.

While I was in high school I learned that the important thing is language, because it’s one of the main ways to communicate and interact with other people around us. It keeps us in contact with other people.

So I knew that it was time for me to learn this language,English. I decided to take a few tests online to test my ability in English. For the first time, I scored a low grade and I really felt discouraged. I sat down to hold my cheeks thought for a while and I decided to retake the test again. Luckily or not, I scored two points better than the last one, which pushed my esteem a little bit but still needed to put more effort. Life became a little easy when I was placed in an English class. I was forced to remain after school in order to keep practicing one-on-one with my teacher. He kept on telling me stories about how his former students didn’t know how to speak English at first but now they’re so fluent. That motivated me to keep pushing and it was another way to tell me that I can make it.

Five months later, I had to sit on my ACT. it is an exam that you do in order to graduate. It gets released after twenty days. I had spent each and every day practicing and hoping that one day I’ll sit for an exam an do well. You could find me sitting with my teacher after everyone else is out of school,practising how to write sentences and reviewing different types of essays. I felt comfortable and ready for a test. I sat the first two hours and I felt good about it, but at the same time didn’t want to count my chicks before they hatch.

Twenty days later an email notification popped on my phone and it was the results of the exam. I was nervous that maybe I didn’t do well and I thought I did perfectly fine. Luckily, I had a 90th. Tears of joy started running down my potato-like cheeks. I made a legacy in my high school. Everybody knew me. I did that to prove the stereotypes of people who thought that immigrants can’t make it. I was shocked. My hard work of remaining in school never went unrewarded. From that day henceforth I loved English and spent all of my time reading articles. I became an inspiration to my friends. I also speak fluently with no struggles. I made lots and lots of friends. My passion for English grew a better version of me. All in all, I couldn’t achieve these results without having a passion for English.

In conclusion, staying focused and being passionate helped me to be a good student. I have been using this strategy since I came in the US and it has really helped a lot as a student. It has also changed my identity and I’m able to speak English it is my second language. I can now express myself in any way. I’ve also maintained my interest in learning new languages anywhere new I visit. I hope to instill anybody with stereotypical thoughts that it’s hard to learn a new language. So if you think of what is going to change your life English could be just the ticket you need to change your life.
