Academic plagiarism, What Is Plagiarism and How to Avoid It. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJCTcL_1UWM&feature=youtu.be.
This video was very helpful in defining plagiarism intentional or unintentional. I was surprised by the fact that resubmitting a paper you personally authored is a form of plagiarism as well. Some other unlikely sources I may be at risk for is forgetting to source an article that I used immediately instead of going back and trying to find it again.
Although I don’t know the name of the guy who voices the video he did a good job coming up with suggestions to avoid plagiarism and helpful reminders to only use credible peer-reviewed sources.
Barr, Matthew. Video Games Can Develop Graduate Skills in Higher Education Students: A Randomised Trial. NeuroImage, Academic Press, 26 May 2017, www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0360131517301215.
The experiment had selected first and second year college students via email to participate in playing up to 120 minutes of videogames in a game lab every Tuesday for the duration of the experiment.
The results of the experiment were that the game-players had better test scores than the control group in these assessments: communication, adaptability, resourcefulness. The games that were available were role playing games, strategy or co-operative, they chose games that were recommended by Metacritic recommendation and available on Valve’s Steam database. I personally like how they had a wide variety of games that were available that could suit anyone’s taste (who liked videogames) from Lara Croft Tomb Raider to Minecraft.
The experiment was somewhat limited as they only provided PC games not consoles and the PC’s themselves were not intended for gaming so that could be improved. Overall I think this experiment was successful in showing that gamers have transferrable skills from gaming that leads to success in college such as communication, problem solving and adaptability.
Morgan, Hannah. “How Social Media Can Help and Harm Your Job Search.” U.S. News & World Report, U.S. News & World Report, 3 Aug. 2017, www.money.usnews.com/money/blogs/outside-voices-careers/articles/2017-08-03/how-social-media-can-help-and-harm-your-job-search.
I found this article helpful yet I was already familiar with the concept of recruiters googling potential employees. They are also looking at your profile to see your qualifications for the job and what other people post about you. Some new information Morgan introduced was that companies continue you to monitor and check your online profiles even after you are hired. I think the author did a really great job outlining specific details of what companies are looking for (good judgement, better decision making) and a strategy to increase your profile savviness.
“Cyberloafing: Cost or Benefit?” ThinkBusiness The Art of the Dumpling Lessons from Din Tai Fung Comments, 11 July 2012, thinkbusiness.nus.edu/article/cyberloafing/.
Professor Vivien Lim designed an experiment to figure out the amount of productivity (or lack there of) that comes with cyberloafing at work. The design was 3 groups of undergraduates all given a mundane task to accomplish. The results showed that the third group (cyberloafers) were the most productive and efficient, they reported having lower levels of mental exhaustion, boredom and higher levels of engagement. I thought this article was a great summary of the original research by Lim. It also provided the opinion of office managers which was kind of surprising with suggestions of performance based rewards and use deadlines, and find motivated people who like the work they do. I would recommend it to anyone in a company setting who is considering making a cyberloafing policy.
Engelhart, Ken. Why Concerns About Net Neutrality Are Overblown. The New York Times, The New York Times, 4 Dec. 2017, www.nytimes.com/2017/12/04/opinion/net-neutrality-overblown-concerns.html.
I thought this opinion article was a great article to choose from the New York TImes. Written by a lawyer who specializes in communications law. He pointed out that the cases that made headlines were rare and not as common as the media would have them appear. He also made some good points about how Internet Service Providers could lose money by trying to charge sites for access, because widespread public disproval and loss of customers. I hadn’t come across the debate of net neutrality before this course giving me the impression it wasn’t a big deal. Now I have a better understanding, there are laws in place to protect net neutrality. I think Engelhart did a great job his article was easy to read, especially for an audience like me who is unfamiliar with the topic.
National Security Agency. Best Practices for Keeping Your Home Network Secure, Department of Defense, 2014.
They covered topics strategies to protect your system by installing 3rd party security (like Norton), to using Adobe or Foxit to open PDF files you find online because they are easy to hide viruses in. Also using the administrator profile on your computer can leave you more vulnerable to attack from hackers, they suggest making an additional account that is non administrative and to use that account as much as possible for routine browsing and the like. These tips were helpful and new information for me. Some of the info was redundant, use a firewall, strong passwords, wariness of using suspicious sites and online shopping, make sure you are using a device that is the most secure, for example not your child’s computer (because they are less aware and may have a virus already, or not use anti-phishing or standard protections). I found the article in this brochure to be very helpful easy to read although probably for circulation among the military and employees of the NSA and Department of defense. The editor/author did a great job making it easy to read without too many technical terms.
Huculak, Mauro, and Mauro Huculak. “How to Customize the Look and Feel of Windows 10.” Windows Central, Windows Central, 1 Mar. 2018, www.windowscentral.com/how-customize-look-and-feel-windows-10.
I found this article very easy to read and follow the instructions on how to customize windows 10. Had a lot of good tips on how to utilize apps, tiles and live update options. I was able to take some of their advice a delete tiles and apps that I don’t use, I also was able to turn off some notifications that I found annoying. I feel they did a good job at helping someone like me whose average with computers to optimize my computer for me.
Instructables. “How to Use Windows System Tools to Maintain and Repair Your Computer.” Instructables.com, Instructables, 19 Sept. 2017, www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Use-Windows-System-Tools-to-Maintain-and-Re/.
This article had step by step instructions on how to use system software tools for both Windows and Mac in order to optimize and protect your computer. Tools included Task Manager/ Event Viewer performance monitor and Registry Editor. The article was concise and exact in the steps process. I enjoyed watching the how-to videos that came along with this article. They did a good job of addressing the audience that might not be familiar with computers.
