Effective communication skills
There is a strong association between the miscommunication and poor patient’s outcome (Foronda, MacWilliams & McArthur, 2016). Proper use of the effective communication skills like verbal and the non-verbal communication skills between the nursing professionals and the patients is important in order to attain successful health related outcomes. In order to achieve this, the nursing professionals must assist the patients while demonstrating respect, kindness, courtesy and sincerity towards the specific mental, physical and cultural needs of the patient (Kourkouta et al., 2016). Murray and Buckley (2017) are of the opinion that use of the effective communication skills by the registered nurse leaders helps in effective conflict management and at the same time helps in maintaining a positive flow of energy within the team. Banerjeeet al. (2017) statedthat a nurse leader who can communicate effectively is more likely to hear the concerns of the subordinate nurses. Such that the team mates feel that their issues are heard or being addressed and thereby helping to build trust and satisfaction and increasing the overall nursing strength by decreasing the nurse turnover.
Conflict is a consistent and unavoidable issue in healthcare organization. In spite of giving training to the nurse managers and leaders for the conflict resolution, the problems like relationship between the staffs, stress and staff retention are persistent. Thus proper skills of the conflict management among the registered nurse are important to maintain a positive work-environment. Conflict mainly arises from issues associated with the interpersonal relationships and poor leadership skills (McKibben, 2017). Novice nurses entering into an already established healthcare team must be integrated and supported to provide mutual role respect between all the team members. This process is mainly done by the nurse leaders with the execution of proper conflict management skills. The main skills that are important for the effective conflict management include promotion of the positive team dynamics, application of the effective communication skills while fostering mutual respect for the promotion of the positive work environment. Reduction in the conflicts among the team members will help to increase the team bonding and this in turn will help in the promotion of safe and effective delivery of care while encouraging therapeutic relationship among the colleagues and managers (McKibben, 2017). Almost et al. (2016) stated that conflict is inevitable, and apart from the nurse leaders, the other nursing professionals must provide active participation in order to minimize conflict management. However, it is the duty of the nurse leader to encourage the team mates to indulge in active team building for the reduction of the chances of the conflict management.
According to the score highlighted in the leadership inventory scale, I scored 28 in the human skill. This is regarded as a high score. Thus it can be considered that under personal skill as a nurse,I have effective communication skill above the perceived limits. However, I would like to further improve my effective communication skills (verbal and non-verbal skills) in the domain of mentoring skills. Murray and Buckley (2017) stated that in the profession of nursing, role transition leads to the development of anxiety and stress and the condition is sound among the novice nurses. This can be reduced with the help of proper mentoring by the registered nurse leaders. For improving the mentoring communication skill of the nurse leader the use of the simulation based training is found to be effective. I would take help from my senior leaders and would participate in the simulation-based training in order to improve my mentoring communication skills.
I scored in the conceptual skill within the band of the moderate score (22: Moderate range). Thus I would like to increase by overall concept in the culturally competency in the nursing profession and how the concept of the culturally competency differs while handling patients or nurses from the indigenous nursing background. Dauvrin and Lorant (2015) stated that social relationship along with the leadership effects within the healthcare profession must be given importance while generating and applying the culturally competent approaches. This requires continuous approach as the majority of the aspiring nurse managers are not always the same person like that of the formal leaders and thus lags mentioning skills.
Selecting particular service area: Aged care
Australian Government Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission replaced Australian Aged Care Quality Agency and the Aged Care Complaints Commission on Jan 1 2019. This organization protects and enhances the safety and quality of the aged care services while giving proper respect in maintaining privacy and confidentiality of the patients’ information in the medical records. At times engaging older adults in the informed decision making process become a challenge for the nursing professional as the odder adults especially those who are suffering from dementia lack the required cognitive thinking skills to participate in the decision making process. Moreover, at times the majority of them do not have the power-of-attorney and thus it become difficult for the nursing professionals to share the medical records or access the medical records of such patients and share the same with their family members in order to extract the informed consent for the treatment(Bynum, Barre, Reed & Passow, 2014). According to the privacy and confidentially rights, a nursing professional can never share the medical information of a patient without their consent (NMBA Standards of Ethics 2018). Under such circumstances, it the duty of the nursing professional to access the individual’s capacity to provide consent for the treatment of the healthcare related decision. This task is challenging and requires delicate balance of person’s right to privacy and confidentially while respecting the autonomy. Four-component model of decisional capacity that includes understanding, appreciation, reasoning and expression of choice is used in order to access the decision making capacity of the older adults and thus helping to upheld the concept of privacy and confidentially(Elliott et al., 2016). If it was found that the older adultsaresuffering from the cognitive impairment then the right of the power of attorney is used. Under this right, a trusted family member who is being selected by the client is asked to provide informed consent on behalf of client (older adults) in healthcare decision-making process. The private and confidential medical information must be shared with the power-of-attorney apart from the older adult (South Australian Government, 2019).
Digital Health in Planning in Patient Care
Digital health or the application of the digital health technologies for the health has become a salient feature of healthcare practice. This further helps to bring innovation in the information and communication technology in order to address the healthcare needs of the population. I think implementation of the personalised yet integrated healthcare system can help to reduce the pressure over the human resource of the current healthcare system and it might result in the delivery of quality care irrespective of the age, location and type of disease of the patient. The innovation that I consider can enhance the healthcare practice and increase the provision for patient centred care is the use of huggable robot. Huggable robot can playfully interact with the child and thus providing socio-emotional support under paediatric care setup (Jeong et al., 2015). However, I think further innovations must be undertaken in order to customise the robots based on the age of the child as the psychological milestones of the children changes with age. The research conducted by Jeong et al. (2015) highlighted that not only in the paediatric field, the use of huggable robot is equally helpful under the aged care setup. The main issues that the older people experience include decline in the physical and the cognitive skills while facing complex psychological issues like social exclusion and lack of family support. The presence of huggable robot helps in meeting the psychological needs of the older people to a certain extent (Robinson, MacDonald & Broadbent, 2014).However, I think there are still gaps in the meeting the personalised identified needs of the older adults like health education and cognitive stimuli moreover there are barriers in acceptance of hugging robots. I would enhance my practice by introducing animal robots for older adult care set-up it will act as a substitute of pet and thus helping to satisfy the psychological needs of the lonely older adults. In case of the paediatric care, I would make use of the soft-toy for increasing its acceptance among the children.
Role of conflict on register nurse
Role conflict is defined as the incompatibility of requirements and the expectations from the role where the compatibility is analysed based on the given set of condition that cast a significant impact on the overall role performance. Conflict might occur when the people disagree about the expectations against any particular role. Alternatively role conflict can be defined as the feeling of torn apart in multiple directions and being unable to find the way to satisfy the role partner. Generation of role conflict results in decrease in productivity, increase level of dissatisfaction, tension and complete psychological withdrawal from work(Rovithis et al., 2017).The study conducted over the acute care nurses highlighted that the nurse managers are vulnerable towards experiencing substantial role conflict. The main reason behind this is inadequate definition about the job role along with unexpected ethical complications and dilemma along with lack of proper insight about the case manager role. Role conflict increases the level of job dissatisfaction among the registered nurse manager while decreasing the level of job performance and increasing the level of nurse turn over. Smith (2011) are of the opinion that nurses transitioning to care giver to the nurse manager must be prepared systematically in order to highlight and specifically manage the ethical challenges that care commonly encountered by the nurse manager. Further development of the theoretical foundation of nursing will be helpful in assisting the caregivers for understanding their role as nurse manager with the all the inherent rights and thus helping tp increase the overall performance while decreasing the turnover.
Self-care strategies
In order to cope-up with stress, I will regularly practice yoga (ashanas and meditation) along with mild to moderate physical activity. Eslami, Elahi, Mohammadi and Fallahi(2017) are of the opinion that regular practice of physical activity helps to remain physically fit. A healthy physiological parameter helps to increase the job performance and at the same time helps in improving the self-coping skills like effective management of job stress. Medication and practice of yoga helps will help to calm my mind while regulating the proper blood circulation within the body and thus helping in effective stress management. Akbar, Elahi, Mohammadi and Khoshknab (2017) highlighted in their study that comprehensive effort to calm stressed condition (physical and psychological strategies) helps to facilitate situational coping and thus helping to stay emotionally and physically well.
During my graduate nurse year I will practice culturally competent attitude. This is relevant to by job role because this will help me to work with a diverse group of professionals from different cultural backgrounds. I order words, it can be said that positive workplace behaviour through culturally competent atmosphere will help in facilitation of working with multidisciplinary team. The presence of multidisciplinary team members and international nurses will help to enrich the healthcare workforce and thus helping to improve the outcome care (Dauvrin & Lorant, 2015;Murphy, Curtis & McCloughen, 2016). During my graduate nurse year I will also practice the compassion, respect and understanding. This will increase my scope of continuous professional development and thus helping me to achieve excellence during my professional life span. As per the NMBA (Nursing and the Midwifery Board of Australia) standards of nursing (2018), creating the scope of continuous professional development is an important of aspect of the nursing profession as it helps in improving the personal skills. Staying compassionate towards the seniors in order to learn from them will also help me to generate a bonding with my seniors and this will facilitate team effort further(Bengtsson & Carlson, 2015). While staying compassionate I will also execute the use of the effective communication skills in order to listen to the guidance of my senior attentively and thus will help to increase bonding with seniors.
