The purpose of the paper is to present the concept of business process management and how it applies to the business process. In order to do that first the concept of the business process will be presented. In order to understand the concept in appropriate way an article will be selected that has relevancy to the topic. The main findings of the article will be studied and the same will be presented in the paper with adequate details. Along with that the research methodology followed by the authors of the article will also be highlighted. This will help to identify the procedure followed by the authors to derive the findings or the claims that have been made in the article. This will make the analysis of the paper more detailed and authenticate. Additionally some other articles of the similar topic will also be analysed to see what other authors have to say on this and what points those authors have pointed out regarding the business process management. This comparison is not for proving the credibility of the article being reviewed in this paper, but rather making the review much stronger and resourceful. The paper will also contain a conclusion part with the summary of the main findings and a justification will also be made if the purpose of the review have been properly met or not.
The article that is discussed in this context discusses about the business process management and its implication in the organizational workflow (Schmiedel , Vom Brocke and Recker 2014). The main objective of the business process management is to consider a collection of activities which comprises of more than one input and based on this consideration the system must provide the output that is based on customer preference and value. It basically organises the activities according to the importance and time frame. The activities however need to have exact start and ending so that it becomes easier to provide the framework for organising the activities. Hence the input and the output must be defined explicitly. It basically defines a set of attributes and based on that a controlled flow is initiated that connects the inputs to the outputs for achieving a specific task.
According to the author the process that is followed within the organizational context is divided into two broad category a) operational process which aims at activities that considers the value chain of the organization b) management process that which include information processing, information coordination, information control and the communication that governs the execution of the system as a whole.
According to the authors, it is important to have the efficiency in both the process, otherwise the overall efficiency in the business process is not possible to maintain. The efficiency in both the process is essential to ensure as the process improves the functioning of the organization which in turns influence the success in the core business process. In order to do that it is important to coordinate the IT assets for improving the process view. As the improvement of the IT assets will improve certain additional features that are essential for the effectiveness of the business process.
The improvement in the IT assets will help the organization to gain insight about certain business decision and drive it with success. For example if the organization want to invest in certain areas and want to achieve success with the application of the IT resources , then the success in business process management will be closely associated with the proper management in the IT resources . This has led the organizations into rapid development in the IT infrastructure. One of the major motivation for the rapid deployment of IT solutions is the efficiency in the business process. Organizations are realising the way technology is brining improvement in business process through effective use of the business process management. The impact of IT on the business process is complete has taken a complete new dimension that synchronizes with the organizational goal and assists to shape it according to the organization need.
However Chang (2016) thinks that the business process management is more of a discipline of the management and it should be associated with management philosophy. Although the authors support the role of technology in the business process management, but make it clear that without the proper management practise in place the benefits of the technology for the controlling and managing the business process cannot be ensured. According to the article for proper execution of the business process system, it is important to ensure the quality management which shares the similarity with the earlier management theories. According the authors the actual way to operate the business process management is to create proper management practise and integrate it with the technology solutions for achieving higher success in the process. While managing the process, it is worth considering the effort of the manual workforce. The technology provides means to ease the process to some extent, but it is not wise to completely depend on the technology. The ability to manage the workforce along with the technological solutions is what it takes for successful implementation of the business process management within the organizational context.
Vom Brocke , Petry and Gonser (20116) have supported the view of the technology in the efficiency of the business process management. However the authors are not inclined towards a particular directions. The authors here somehow followed a moderate approach while choosing the alternative between whether the business process management is a technical or managerial approach. The authors makes it clear that the main objective of the business process management is to help the organization to achieve business related goal while serving the customer. Now it is true that without proper understanding of the customer needs it is not possible to derive solutions that synchronizes with the customer requirement. In order to understand that effective customer management is definitely needed. But this does not make the technology less important. One point here worth considering when making the comparison between the management vs technology for the business process framework, is that both of these are used for different purpose. The management approach is much more concerned about what to implement and the technology is aimed toward how to implement. Hence both of these approach is important based on the nature of the task being considered. Both of the approach needs to be integrated in order to get the full benefits of the business process system.
In order to conduct the research the authors of the selected article (Schmiedel , Vom Brocke and Recker 2014) have nominated various literatures for review. So the research methodology followed here is the secondary and qualitative research. The authors, while choosing the literature has made it sure that the articles are of current one. This ensures the quality of the literature selections. The authors have also made the justification why the particular choice have been made. The authors mention that the concept of business process management is already present in the industry for a quite significant time. Although the concept is not new, but the standards have changed a lot. Hence in order to make the analysis effective it is important to work with the most recent version of the literature to get idea about the ongoing research and improvement in the field. The authors have collected the literatures from various sources such as European Journal of Information Systems (EJIS), Information Systems Journal (ISJ), Information Systems Research (ISR), Journal of AIS (JAIS), Journal of MIS (JMIS), and MIS Quarterly (MISQ). Two additional journal sources have been considered as well which include Journal of Strategic Information Systems (JSIS) and the Journal of Information Technology (JIT). The author further clarifies that considering sources such as science direct and authentic journal has made it possible to examine the core management and information system that has further enhanced the research. The authors have only chosen peer reviewed articles and authenticate journals for better assessment of the concept. Literatures were searched based on the descriptors “Business Process Management,” “Business Process Reengineering,” “Business Process Innovation,” “BPM,””BPR,” and “BPI. Once the literature have been identified and collected an extensive analysis was performed to find similarities and dissimilarities in the research approach pointed out by the authors of those article and the respective research findings of those authors. The research for the considered article was conducted with comparing and contrasting those research findings.
However, Schmiedel , Vom Brocke and Recker ( 2014) think that although several authors have conducted research in this sector and provided different views based on their respective research, the absence of proper research framework is still missing. The reason behind that as argued by the authors is the lack of proper standards and variation of business infrastructure. The business needs varies significantly across the business domain. Hence it is not possible a set framework and expect it to be followed across the sectors. This is only possible if the framework is capable of handling the large variation in business needs and business process. However the task to achieve that is challenging and difficult too.
Although the article has considered the limitation of proper framework for business process management which further provides opportunity for future research, the article has not provide any solution for the problem. It has just reviewed the relevant literatures and based on that has provided independent view on the topic. This might be considered as the shortcoming of the article or the literature.
Conclusion:
The literature review has been conducted to get a detailed view about the business process management. After conducting the literature review several it is seen that several authors have presented different view on the topic of business process management. Some authors have identified it as a topic which needs managerial overview while some authors have supported the technical aspect. The authors who have supported the managerial viewpoint argues that even though there is a presence of the technology in the business process management, it is just to make the task easier. However the real job is to find the proper requirements and make it work with deriving proper solution for that. However this is not possible if proper management practise is not followed as finding the requirement for the business needs to be comply with the customer needs which in turn demands proper customer management and customer engagement. However, some authors who have inclination towards the technical point of view, makes is justified with the fact that even though proper practises are followed for customer management to find the client needs. It is the ability to provide the solution that makes the business process more successful. However the article reviewed in this paper tries to find a balance between these two approaches. This main article that has been reviewed here makes it clear that in order to find the optimum approach which maximises the efficiency of the business process management system. However the article also clarifies that the proper framework for the business process system is missing and extensive research should be carried out in this section for finding the appropriate framework.
