CAS Reflection Essay
During the first visit to PDK Putrajaya, we started it off with an ice-breaking session with the trainees. Then, a few of us help this wheel-chaired girl with her physiotherapy session while the rest of us assist the preschool and adults group with their learning by the usage of interactive flash cards. During the second visit, we sang patriotic songs since it was the Merdeka week. One of my group mates and I continued the day by teaching the preschool kids about colors and how to differentiate them.
We also played with some toys too. Meanwhile, the other group mates had a ‘Creative Learning Session’ with the disabled adults group.
We played with balloon, did some drawing and learnt how to spell their names correctly. After that is the dancing session with all the trainees and teacher. Before we wrapped up for the day, there was a work presentation by the each of the trainee where they had to present their art work in front of the class.
During the third visit, my group mates and I helped out the teachers to repaint the classrooms at PDK Putrajaya. I interacted with the trainees at PDK Putrajaya by many ways, depending on the age and the type of disability. For example, I interacted with the preschool kids one-on-one, because he/she has a lack of communicative skill and so I had to focus on one kid at a time and spoke directly to him in a clear and intelligible way.
Then only, he/she would respond to me. Other than that, I interacted with the teachers by teamwork and cooperation when we painted together. I really felt like we had bonded really well with the teachers.
Throughout the whole activities carried out during the three visits, I hope to shrink away from having the usual perceptions of the social norms towards these people with disabilities. I want to be able to understand them, thus connect with them wholly. Besides that, I hope that the trainees will have fun and enjoy themselves with the joyful activities that we carry out. More importantly, I hope new knowledge will be gained and improvements in their abilities, thinking skills and social skills can be achieved little by little. With the new painted walls, I hope it will be like a breath of fresh air, thus making the trainees more enthusiastic to go to school.
I could say that the activities that my group organized went well and smoothly with only a few minor difficulties and challenges. From my opinion, I measured the level of success achieved by the perspectives of the trainees themselves. How well they interact with us? Do they feel happy and comfortable in our company? Do they learn something new? So, by the way they remembered most of our names, including mine, and how each of them had their own favorite person among us, I could say that we had succeeded. In terms of the difficulties that I encountered, problems came up when I had no clue how to deal with some of the trainee with a certain type of disability such as ADHD and autism. I overcame this problem by consulting with the more well-experienced teachers. I also had to be more patient but at the same time be stern. Some of the trainees were also very shy so I always tried to encourage them and assist them in the activities. My group mates and I also had some difficulties when we had to paint the classrooms because none of us has ever painted before. We divided ourselves into small groups and made the best of our different abilities and heights.
There are a few things that I have learnt about myself and others through the previous activities. First of all, I discover that I have a good leadership skill by how I lead my group in conducting and planning the activities to be held. I also learn that I am not prejudiced towards these disabled people and that I can be very understanding towards them. Plus, I also learn that my group mates are very supporting and my advisor is a very sporting, helpful and kind teacher that makes the teacher-students relationship more meaningful. Besides, I come to realization that it is not these people’s choice to be born that way and be different than we are. We as the normal people have to do our part to make them feel home and as a part of our society. More exclusively, I feel amazed and proud by the strength and patience the teachers at PDK Putrajaya go through day by day helping them. I have developed patience, tolerance and teamwork skill throughout these activities.
The trainees helped me think about my learning during the previous activities. The trainees, in some way, helped me to be grateful for who I am and at the same time make me more willing to help them. I became more patient with life challenges because of them.
My group’s overall activities help benefit others by lessen the teachers’ at PDK Putrajaya burden with the repainting of the classrooms. Many hands make light work. My group also help supply the demand of the KMB students’ needs by selling food to raise fund. In addition to that, the activities broaden the trainees’ view and they learn how to interact with the society. They also make improvements on their problems and disabilities.
