Nightingale Hammerson is a charity home that is registered and has been in existence since 1840. The home provides shelter and caters to the older people from the Jewish community and people who are suffering from dementia. The Nightingale House had a change in its location in the year 1907, which was donated by Lord Wandsworth so that it could be used for charity purpose. In the month of April 2012, the Nightingale and the Hammerson house got merged together and the charity home was established. Currently the home id located in the south west end of London, which is accessible from Clapham and Wandsworth Commons. It is also a ten minutes walk from the Clapham South Underground Station and from Wandsworth Common Mainline Station. They provide facilities for the friends and relatives of the members to come and stay overnight in the house (Nightingalehammerson.org, 2017).
The trustee who keeps an overview on the daily procedures that is taking place within the organization on a daily basis does the management of the home. The Chief Executives along with a management team that is efficient in caring services and the various departmental heads manage the charity home. The house also employs more than three hundred staffs to look after the residents and manage their daily activities, finances, housekeeping, physiotherapy and the various residential services, which is required by the members (Finke, Howe and Huston 2016). The care services department employs a large number of people who helps the house by meeting all the gaps that are present in the organization. The staffs present in the house is committed towards their work and helps in achieving the best quality by delivery the best service when they are employed and even training the new staffs that are employed.
The house maintains a strict law when it comes to diet and complies with the flavors of the Jewish community. No food is allowed from the outside except for fresh fruit that is allowed within the premises of the house. The house comprises of an in-house restaurant that provides various range of foods, which includes rolls and sandwiches, soups and salads along with main course and dessert that is served during the lunchtime (Kulik et al. 2014). There is also a provision for breakfast, which can be utilized by the members that are present in the house. It also comprises of a gym that is fully equipped along with lounges both rest and television, and the staff kitchen is fully equipped with the modern amenities that help in serving the members in a better way. The operations within the house strictly follow a no-smoking policy because of the harm that it can cause to the old members. The staffs are not allowed to smoke anywhere within the housing premises but are allowed to so in some designated areas. These areas are present towards the rear end of the house and comprises of the car park. The staffs are authorized to smoke only during the break times, as it may not hamper the quality of service that is provided to the house inmates (Turner and Clegg 2014).
The service that is provided in the old-age sectors has to adhere to the framework that is concerned with equality and the security in the society, which includes health, welfare and essential care services. These values and principles are tangible in form and serves in the long-term planning and budgeting of the operations. The principle value is to respect the dignity of all humans. The members of the home are entitled to enjoy the best treatment, irrespective of where they used to live and what are the requirements for the service that they are rendering (Nicholson et al. 2013). The main principles for safeguarding the life of the elder people are the self-determination, which explains that the people needs to be well-informed about the choices and the information that is available at that point, which will affect the decision-making capacity of the people (Higgs and Gilleard 2015). It will help in strengthening and utilizing the resources that are available with the principle of resource orientation. Another principle is equality, which helps in satisfying the needs of the humans. This ensures that equality is maintained amongst the older people, which will help in granting the principles consistently. It will also help in abolishing discrimination and intervene when there is an injustice in the system so that the differences can be accepted (Victor 2013).
Participation of the members is also important from the point of view of the individual and the society as well. From the point of view of the individual, the participation in serving the older people helps in maintaining a strong bond in the society. This ensures that the society also gains by being involved in serving the community, which in turn helps in the development of the environment. The security of the old people helps in creating a sense of mental, physical and social safety. This principle helps in promotion of the availability and the quality of services and the support that they get from the society. This helps in the safety of the old age homes and the environment with respect to fire or some accidents (Sallinen, Hentonen and Karki 2015).
The involvement of the local people as part of the staffs in managing the daily operations of the home helps in influencing the change in the strategies that are framed for the old-age home. This helps in raising the quality of services within the house. This helps in making the environment better with respect to the various resources that are available for the older people such as financial, political and socio-cultural. Active participation and successful involvement in serving the house by different people in the various departments helps in the smooth functioning of the daily operations. The people who engage in these services through various departments needs to be constantly informed about the new strategies that are being applied in the house (Ahmed, Leurent and Sampson 2014). This will help in raising the quality of work within the organization eventually. The staffs need to be aware of the relative that visit their particular members needs to be informed early so that all the arrangements can be done in a better way. The strategies that are used in the house is based on the analysis of the situation that is present currently with respect to the services and the health and welfare of the members present in the house. A good strategy will take in to account the operations, planning, transport facility and the housing policies for the older people. The vision is defined as a target that is shared and the strategies that help in making the smooth functioning within the house a reality. A better vision and a good strategy can be done based on the values that are present in and around that particular environment (Mayhew and Smith 2014).
From the point of view of the members present in the house, it has to determine the various services that are available in that locality and needs to take those in to account. The services need to be divided into local, regional and the ones that are based on a large population. The regional services are the recognized form mostly where the special skills are needed and the ones that help in adding value in the society. An example of this would be the special services that are required in caring the people that has symptoms of dementia. The guidelines of the strategies need to be implemented so that these services can help in promoting welfare and health (Grenier, Barken and McGrath 2016).
The strategies that need to be implemented require an effective leadership skill and the commitment to achieve the targets that are set in the strategy. This helps in the cooperation of the staffs that are involved in the service procedure with that of the managers on an efficient manner. A successful draft of the strategies that needs to be implemented will help in the active involvement of the staffs at every stage to improve the quality of services. There is a need for an interactive session between the staffs and the supervisors will help in establishing a link, which will help in achieving the targets on a daily basis (Bamhart and Penaloza 2013). It helps in forming a change management, which needs to be integrated closely to establish the aim set in the strategy. Communication plays an important part in this as it helps in establishing the link between the superiors, subordinates and the members of the house. The communication network needs to be in a systematic manner, which should focus on those individuals that are required in the process (Vines et al. 2015).
After the strategies have been designed and the plan has been laid out, it needs to be implemented in the old-age care house. The administrators and the supervisors need to scrutinize the outcome, efficiency, effectiveness and the satisfaction that the members are deriving out of it. A detailed report needs to be prepared, which will help in understanding if the strategies that were implemented worked out or not. These reports will help in finding out the flaws that are present in the strategy so that it can be removed when the strategies are planned for the future. The conclusions that are drawn from these reports while assessing the strategies will help in guiding the operations in the internal environment of the old-age house or will assist when the strategy is adjusted with a new one. Assessment of the reports to improve the management process helps in the development of the operations constantly. The main aim is to check the success rate from the point of the view of the implementation of the strategy in the report (Chatterjee and Hadi 2015).
The welfare and health of the people can be improved by getting a response from the old-age house about the successful planning and development of the various administrative sectors. These responses will help in making important decisions about the welfare of the house and the different aspects as well such as sports and cultural activities. An environment that can be easily accessed with the facility of transportation and access to the various public services help in reducing the cost of health and welfare services. The families and friends help the community by looking after the welfare of the older people. The service system in the job process helps in encouraging, guiding and motivating the people so that they take up the responsibility in serving for the welfare of the old people (Schwarzkopf et al. 2014). Some of the elements that help in the promotion of health and social welfare are the support that the community derives through the intense participation of the people. The advice and the guidance that the staffs receive from the supervisors of the home care helps in ensuring the welfare of the older people. It also helps in the promotion of better lifestyle by giving proper and healthy diet to the older people so that they remain fit. The members in the home are made to exercise regularly so that it prevents the onset of diseases and prevents the muscles from getting weak. Since the members suffer from dementia, they are made to undergo regular physiotherapy that will help them in strengthening the power (Sung et al. 2016).
The external environment of the house needs to be well maintained so that the collective needs of the residents are met in a comfortable manner. The ground that they have needs to be maintained and kept clean and tidy so that it will attract the service users. The entire building meets the requirement that is in accordance with the fire service department and the health department of the state and the country (Stinton et al. 20154).
It helps in understanding the environment on a broader perspective, which would help in studying the main factors that are required to enhance the quality of service within the old age home.
The political environment of the home has gained some stability due to the changes in the health and welfare services in the society in the past years. The politicians have made a major impact on the government institutions to introduce new policies that will help the social welfare sector of the country. This has helped many organizations that deal with older people to reduce their cost significantly. The organization has managed to use its finances in an efficient manner, which has led to a better treatment of the members in the house. The staffs are made to work with a hike in their salaries so that they remain committed to the organization. Thus, it is seen that the staffs are skilled so that they can manage the residents in a proper manner, which will help in increasing the quality standard of service (Duarte 2014).
From the political area, it can be seen that the increase in the salaries of the staffs has helped in the better management of the residents in the house. There has been a decline of the resignation of the staff members because of the needs and the demands being looked after by the organization. This has resulted in growth of the economy because of the investment that the supervisors have done in the old age home. The increase in the workforce and the technological advancements to meet the needs of the members has helped the organization to grow (Ralph et al. 2014).
There is an increased awareness about the old age homes that has resulted directly in increasing the demand of these services in the community. The local people have understood that if the intervention is done at the right moment, it will lead to a better quality in the lives of those people. Many communities in the country are trying to make the people aware about the various mental disorders so that they can be aware of these and prevent it when needed. The organizations that take care of these people need to be patient, as these patients need time to recover from this illness (Lloyd et al. 2017).
These organizations are always updated with the best technologies that are available because they have to look after the members in an efficient manner. The care that the patients receive in this organization has to be long-term so that the disorder can be solved. The grants that are given by the government and the various funds from charities that they receive help the old age home to purchase new equipments. This ensures that the members are provided with the state-of-the art benefits, which help them in being cured (Ralph et al. 2014).
The external environment of the house has to be maintained in a proper manner so that it is free from all the pollution. The staffs in the home ensure that the environment is well maintained so that it can be free from diseases. The smoking time of the staffs are fixed so that they can look after the property in a better way and not litter the place (Duarte et al. 2014).
A set of rules and regulations is set in the home so that it ensures the smooth functioning of the organization. These rules are made in such a manner so that the members can get the best benefit in the process. The staffs look after the needs and demands of the members on a regular basis, which helps in improving the quality of service (Lloyd et al. 2017).
This analysis will help in the better understanding of the quality in the service that the members receive in the house at a micro environmental level. The analysis will help in establishing the various internal factors that contributes to the success or the failure of the organization.
The strengths of the home are that it has the modern equipments that are needed to provide comfort to the members. The house has invested in many facilities such as lounges and good kitchen appliances so that the members can be provided with the best quality food. The maintenance of the external environment is also important because it helps in keeping the environment free from pollution and diseases (Chacko 2014).
One of the weaknesses of the old age home is the employee retention. The salary that is being given to the staffs is above. The salary that is being given to the staffs is above average but the amount of work that the staffs are putting in is more than that. This has led to a change in the members because of the constant hiring of the employees. They take time to learn the process so that they can improve the quality of service. Due to the severe illness of the patients, changing of staffs will lead to inadequate services that are rendered to the residents (Hoque 2015).
The old age home has been constantly upgrading their service so that it can maintain their service quality in a better way. The organization gets many funds and grants, which can be utilized to make the environment better in terms of quality of service and the comfort that the members receive in the house. This will help in attracting more members in the community from different places (Chacko 2014).
The organization is not being able to manage the staffs in a better way because of the technological changes that are happening in the home on a regular basis. The communication network inside the organization is not at a good level because of the low interactive session between the members, staffs and the supervisors. This has led to a burnout in the mentality of the staffs because they are not willing to work in this environment. The supervisors need to supervise the reports that are provided to them on a regular basis so that the loopholes in the system can be found out and rectified. If these threats are not managed properly, then the members may leave the premises at any particular point (Hoque 2015).
The old age care home, situated in London is dedicated to the care and upkeep of the old Jewish population of London. Nightingale Hammerson has three branches, or as they call it, three homes, namely, Nightingale house, Hammerson house and Belmont lodge. The organization provides a good quality of service to the inmates and makes them feel welcome and at home. They take good care of the inmates, most of whom suffers from dementia. The patients of dementia have to be dealt with love, care and understanding and also with a lot of patience (Borson et al. 2013). Thus, the staff members of the organization must be very calm and understanding and must have a lot of patience. The old age care home is dedicated to serve care to the elderly members of the Jewish community. However, the management of the organization must be in charge of giving proper training to the staff members of the organization (Cameron and Sosinowicz 2013). The organization is aimed at providing quality and holistic care, support and assistance to the old Jewish people. The organization provides the care and support in a protected and inspiring environment with the help of efficient staff members and volunteers. The organization provides mental and physical security to the residents as well as to their families. The organization also provides short stay care to individuals who have to be looked after during special occasions like the holidays, or during the period of recuperating after an operation (Nightingalehammerson.org, 2017).
The standard of any organization is based on the standards that are being maintained by other companies in the business. It can also exceed the standard of the service set by other companies in the industry. In that case, the quality and the standard exceed expectations. In the case of Nightingale Hammerson, too the standard of the organization is maintained in accordance with the standards set by other organizations of the same industry. The services of the Nightingale Hammerson too are at par with the industry standards. The residential care that is provided at Hammerson house, supplies services to those people who are in need for assistance for daily simple tasks like bathing, dressing and washing. The inmates of the house can enjoy the benefits of the services of a general practitioner who visit the house on a weekly basis. The organization has also arranged for a regular visit by a chiropodist, a local dentist and an optician. There are also many activity programs, which are conducted by the management of the organization. A mini bus takes the residents of the house to different cultural and social outings as well as to shopping trips. This service is essential to the residents of the organization, as the elderly people cannot move freely and in an agile manner, and thus they need a vehicle that can take them anywhere they like to go (Dewar and Nolan 2013). The Hammerson house also arranges for services like physiotherapy, and a podiatrist are provided to the residents of the house. The Nightingale house, which is a branch of the Nightingale Hammerson, provides services like an on-site general practitioner, pharmacy and a therapy department that provides the ultimate care to the old and helpless inmates of the care home. It also provides a care program that is dedicated to those residents with advanced dementia and who is towards the end of their life. Through this care program, the staff members of the organization connect and engage with the residents of the house who are helpless and are in need for some care and compassion from others. The program is also called Namaste program which takes its name from the Indian greeting. The staff tries to provide a better quality of life to those who are battling dementia at an advanced stage of life. The third house of the organization, the Belmont lodge, provides services like a civic centre, a library, an indoor shopping mall, a general hospital and many other facilities (Nightingalehammerson.org, 2017).
The standards set by the industry are more or less met by the organization. It efficiently provides care and support to the older people of the Jewish community who are in dire need of care, understanding and support. The treatment that should be meted out to the patients of dementia should be with full of love, care and understanding. The patients of dementia should also be provided with proper treatment so that no further damage is caused by the illness (Stewart et al. 2014). Although it is a degenerative disease, the impact of the disease can be checked with the help of proper understanding, care and support that should be provided to the patients. The patients of dementia have to handled with love, care and understanding. The people, who take care of individuals with dementia, have to very understanding and compassionate. The patients of dementia often hallucinate, and suffer from incontinence. The patients often suffer from low self-esteem, and lack of self-confidence and are in need for a understanding and friendly surrounding. The Nightinagle Hammerson provides all these qualities in its staff members, which are essential to be present in a person who is dealing with old patients suffering from dementia.
Nightingale Hammerson is an old age home for elderly people that are situated in London. It has around 400 staff across the two centers – one in South West London and another in North West London. The organization offers great care to older members of the Jewish community. The organization offers a great place to retreat to the older members of the community (Nightingalehammerson.org, 2017). Although the organization offers a high-class service to the older people, there are few scopes of improving the service of the organization on various aspects.
One of the ways in which the service of the old age care home can be improved is by bringing in a holistic approach to providing wellness to the inmates of the old age home. The holistic approach can ensure an all rounded development of the older people which can not only ensure their health but also provide an overall and an all round development to the inmates of the house. This option will help to find a better way to deal with the inmates (Lewis and West 2014).
The above-mentioned three options are necessary to be implemented in the old age home, Nightingale Hammerson, to achieve efficient working and a smooth operation. These few changes are necessary to be implemented in the set up of the organization to achieve maximum utilization of resources. It is also required to help the society to the maximum level. The options have to be implemented to achieve an efficient and adequate working of the care home with sufficient care and warmth being provided to the elderly inmates of the organizations. The options that are to be implemented are necessary as in the day and age of today, an adequate and efficient old age care home is necessary to take care of the old and the weak (Mortimer and Green 2015).
The quality of the services has to be maintained in order to attract more residents and also in order to provide sympathizing care and support to the residents. The required management steps have to be taken in order to achieve a superior quality of services in the old age care home. The proper evidence based treatments to the residents have to be given. The approach that should be taken to deal with the problems of the residents should be person centric or individual centric. The management of the organization must be very careful to retain staffs who are qualified for the job and is extremely compassionate and caring to deal with the residents of the house (Gillespie et al. 2012). Proper team management has to be achieved by adequate communication and proper interaction between the staff members and the management of the organization. This is necessary because happy and coordinated staff members can only achieve the smooth operation of the old age care home (Dewar and Nolan 2013)
For any improvements to take place in old age homes, the government plays an active part by supporting them and improving the facilities that are present from the infrastructural point of view in the building. This will help in gaining attention from various healthcare departments. The young adults need to create awareness about the care and the love that will help in fostering the growth of these homes. Community plays a big role in developing the homes in a better way. They can help financially or extend their care as long as possible, which will help the homes to receive support from them whenever required (Law 2015). The homes must be designed in such a manner that it can provide the members physical and psychological support. This will help in providing better care to the members. It is seen that the women members are more likely to share their rooms with another person as opposed to the males as they prefer to stay single in the rooms. The facilities need to have these so that it does not create any problem for the residents. It is seen that elder people are most likely to feel lonely and get bored. This can be avoided by engaging them in some kind of activity, which will help them in keeping their moods lifted. The best way is to invite kids in the premises as older people are somewhat mutually attracted to kids or by making; them participate in some social events. This will help in keeping them engaged throughout the day. The old age homes needs to have emergency first aid toolkit, which will be of some help during the case of emergency along with a part-time doctor so that they can be summoned whenever possible (Pan et al. 2013).
Since Nightingale Hammerson cares for the dementia related older people, they need to work with policy makers of the state and the federal, which will help in providing quality-based assurance to the members in the house. The employees in the care facility need to undergo educational and training programs, which will help in service the members in a better way. The members in the house need to have a proper consumption of fluids and foods, which will help in maintaining the health and well-being of the members (Van et al. 2014). They need to have a proper screening and the nutritional care that they will receive needs to follow the preventive system guidelines. The lunch and dinner facilities and the menus needs to be according to the members of the house, which will help them in enjoying their meals and an opportunity to interact with the other residents. The members need to be actively involved in social engagement programs, which is one of the best attributes in taking proper care of dementia patients. It will help them to maintain their functional abilities by improving their quality of life (Guarnieri and Sorbi 2015).
With respect to the physical environment, it needs to be comfortable and familiar with the residents of the house. It should have minimal amount of structures and more space so that the members can roam around in the area. They need to have easy and safe access to the outdoors, which will help them in gaining control over the exits. They need to be escorted by some of the employees so that they not feel uncomfortable while roaming around. The environment needs to be positive in manner so that the residents can enjoy their meals at all times (Nguyen et al. 2015).
The disorder is a terminal illness, which decreases the life expectancy of the patients. After being diagnosed with dementia, the person should carefully plan the future until their death. Proper communication needs to be maintained in the house, as it serves the people with dementia. They might require more time to communicate, as it is not easy for them to maintain the standards that normal people follow (Klapwijk et al. 2014). The use of short sentences and pictures need to be encouraged because they are not capable of hearing properly, which is a major drawback in the communication pattern. The old age home must have an interpreter, which will help the members and the employees to communicate in a free manner. The communication process needs to continue so that when the illness gets worse, the members can communicate about their new needs and the care that they need. Planned meetings need to be done between the supervisors, employees and the family members of the residents, which will help the communication pattern to increase in a better way (Konig et al. 2014).
The employees need to have proper pain management program in a routinely manner with the resident that will help them in getting a better knowledge of the site for the pain and the type of pain. It will also help in clarifying the effect that the pain creates on the person and if it is chronic or acute in nature (Groot et al. 2016). Various tools can help in assessing the pain that will work in treating the pain of the members. When a particular tool is identified, it can be used to determine the amount of pain that is present in a particular resident who is suffering from it. The members have a tendency to fall down due to the impairments that are caused by the neurological failure. The facility needs to provide safety so that the mobility of the residents can be free from fall, which will help in minimizing the injuries (Steketee 2016).
