Effective communication and cooperative teamwork is one of the essential elements of healthcare service delivery, which contributes imperatively to providing safe and patient centered effective care to different patients (Hewitt et al., 2015). This assignment provided the opportunity to explore and evaluate the extent of effective communication and teamwork exhibited by a team of nursing professionals for a patient. As mentioned by Sacks et al. (2015), coordination of effective communication is the greatest indicator of adequate teamwork, without effective teamwork and cooperation in a team, effective interpersonal communication between team members cannot be achieved. Hence, I had chosen to explore communication achievements and errors of the MET call scenario as a key indicator of their teamwork as well, which can be considered as one of the key strengths of the report. Another key strength of the student report that I have created can be the descriptive detail for each issue or strength identified in the report. Even though the expert report was successful in discovering and mentioning a varied range of different issues and elements regarding the scenario, there had been no justifying details or discussions available regarding those factors. On the other hand my report has discussed two efficient and two inefficient communication factors in the scenario with enough descriptive detail to justify why they have been considered efficient or inefficient. Another key strength of the report had been that it discussed the impact of team work on patients, staff and the organizations as well, which was absent from the expert report (Ma, 2012).
In terms of limitation I would like to mention that my student report had missed out on some key details about team work that was successfully identified and recognized by the expert report. As for example, the expert report recognized the presence of supportive team leader, cooperative team and distributed workload. However, as per Bezemer, Korkiakangas, Weldon, Kress and Kneebone (2016), a supportive and cooperative team leader is expected to treat each team member equally and value their contribution without any bias. In this case however, Chanika and the rest of the team did not pay much attention to Katie during the call even though she was providing key information regarding the patient, which contradicts the elements of effective teamwork. Another limitation of my student report is that the reporter not mention the lack of hand hygiene on the use of PPE. Although as this discussion was critically centered on effective communication and teamwork I had omitted the part about hygiene as it seemed slightly irrelevant. Although, I would still like to mention that the expert report was clear succinct and concise and has also included certain critical aspects of teamwork such as distribution of workload and cooperative team players which are essential elements of nursing as it reduces stress and burnout (Hewitt et al., 2015). Understanding these issues have helped me realize the impact of such essentials on nursing practice and has enriched my knowledge and understanding of these aspects.
One critical aspect of effective communication that has the potential to affect my professional practice as a nurse includes the lack of assertive yet subtle communication skills. It has to be mentioned that while working in an inter-professional care team where individuals with different professional backgrounds and expecting come together to provide expert care, there can be considerable chances of conflict and interpersonal disagreements in between the team members (Arnold & Boggs, 2015). In that case it is extremely important for the members of the team to put across the point regarding the care planning an intervention so that the safe and effective care provided to the patient is not affected by any error in the team dynamics. In this case scenario as well when Nurse Katie informed about the urine output of the patient, the team members including the leader and the registered nurse did not pay attention to the information. Lack of assertive communication had been one of the contributing factors to such an important information about the patient being overlooked which could lead to potential health problems and safety risks for the patient (Watson, Hewett & Gallois, 2012). I believe that the lack of assertive communication, especially for my seniors or a leader is one of the key limitations of my professional attributes which can also affect my professional growth and can lead to potentially harmful instances for the patient that I’m caring for as well. Hence, I would be requiring to work on this skill so that I can also master the art of assertive communication in an interprofessional teamwork to enhance my competence as a nurse (Riley, 2015). As a recommendation for improving this skill, I would like to reach out to my supervisor regarding this and take my supervisors’ opinion to join a professional course to enhance my confidence and assertive communication skills (Lyndon et al., 2012). This will help me improve both my confidence and my assertive skills so that when performing in a multidisciplinary health care team, I can communication my opinion clearly and assertively so that it is taken seriously and the patient safety is protected under all circumstances.
