Teenagers have a tendency to get out of control, sometimes worse than others. Putting dish soap into a public fountain is an example of how teenagers can act without thinking of consequences. Dish soap can have numerous negative impacts on both the environment and other citizens. Public fountains generally are set far away from any water pipe or source. However, there is the odd time when they are beside a major water pipe or lake. When dish soap enters the fountain it creates a giant pool of bubbles, which then overflow the fountain onto the surrounding ground.
If there is a water pipe or lake nearby, the bubbles can enter them and cause harm. If dish soap were to enter the lake or river, it is toxic to all animals and fish in the lake and could cause them to get sick or even die which could really screw up the ecosystem. Likewise, if a major water pipe was near the fountain, bubbles would be entering and perhaps causing damage to systems.
Either way, the chemicals in soap can enter water systems and can possibly be harmful. Chemicals in dish soap can cause harmful reactions to users.
Some people have allergies to the scent of them; some people have allergies to the chemicals within them. By putting dish soap into a public fountain, one is exposing the public to chemicals that can be harmful or irritating to their bodies. This could be a serious problem for anyone dangerously allergic to the lime scent or chemicals.
Spreading the bubbles around by means of bubble fight also heightens the risk of someone having contact with the dish soap. Putting dish soap into a public fountain can be harmful to the public if they have allergies to the chemicals in it.
Soap can be a very slippery substance. Which is why if there is ever soap on the ground/floor a sign is put up to caution the public from walking on it and risking slipping and falling. When dish soap is put into a public fountain, the bubbles overflow onto the ground and cause a slippery area. This risk is heightened when the bubbles are thrown about. If someone were to walk by, perhaps not notice the soap on the ground, they could slip and fall and really hurt themselves. They could then sue the city for failing to protect them or caution them that the ground was slippery.
Also, even the delinquents who participated in the “bubble fight” could have fallen and hit their head on the fountain and really hurt themselves. By putting dish soap into a fountain, everyone is at risk of slipping and falling on the suds. Fountains are meant to be monumental objects. They can be either a gift to someone, or from someone to the city. By putting dish soap into the fountain, one is disrespecting the image that the monument carries. This is extremely rude and childish of someone to do and by participating in throwing the bubbles around; it is only enhancing the disrespect for the community.
It is a source of vandalism along side graffiti and egging and can be a criminal offense chargeable as ‘mischief’, which is a summary offense and can land someone up to a lofty $5000 fine or even minimal jail time. On top of being a sign of disrespect, the bubbles must be cleaned up as soon as possible by a city worker. This could take hours as the fountain must be drained, then cleaned out and filled back up. As well, the surrounding ground must be scrubbed and cleared of all soap to eliminate any possibilities of the problems stated above. Not one of those tasks would be easy, or fun and all are very time-consuming and annoying.
The one who acts in putting the dish soap into the fountain does not think of the person or people who must clean up after them. If people come to enjoy the fountain, they are unable to do so as their experience is interrupted by the bubbles and the thoughts of the young delinquents who thought they were having fun one minute, and don’t realize just who they are upsetting. By acting in throwing bubbles around or putting dish soap into a public fountain, one is not thinking about the lack of respect for the community and even tourists visiting the city, they are showing.
People learn by watching, therefore if any child or easily influenced individual were to have walked by and seen someone putting dish soap into a fountain, they could think that it is OK to do so and will follow these wrongful actions. Anyone who does this is not only a poor role model but is also putting other people in danger if they believe that this is an okay thing to do. Putting dish soap into a fountain is the wrong thing to do and can negatively impact both the environment and the community. If the soap gets into the water, it can contaminate lakes and water supplies.
The bubbles may trigger allergies and cause walking surfaces to become very slippery, which could result in someone getting injured. Foaming a fountain is a huge sign of disrespect for the community and the image that the fountain is trying to portray. All in all foaming a fountain has many negative consequences and should never be done. Now, I realize you are probably not going to read this, and that it was a mammoth waste of my time and yours. I apologize sincerely for wasting your time last night and whenever you receive these essays.
However, thank you for not punishing us to a higher extent. Despite the fact that we did not actually foam the fountain ourselves, playing in the foam in the fountain was the wrong thing to do, and, although it was fun, I have learned the consequences of my actions and that it may be fun for me for an hour, it is a huge job to clean up and poses a problem for the community.
