To investigate the challenges that are faced by women in the workplace due to gender discrimination
As every student complete their course of education after graduation, it is important for them to acquire the knowledge and skills that is needed for them to sustain in the making of their career. The traditional training programs have been designed to fulfill the needs of career of young graduate students, which help them to get vital knowledge about the ways to deal the challenges in the workplace. The work-study methods of training are designed to provide training to all the job aspirants.
Nevertheless, it is also important for the methods that are used to provide training to the students to be updated regularly, which will help the inexperienced workers to deal with all the new challenges in the workplace. When a young graduate student gets employed in the workplace, they have high level of expectations upon themselves. However, due to lack of proper experience and skills that are needed in the jobs, it is important for them to get the proper form of guidance, which will help them in the matters related to growth of the company.
The current study aims to analyze and review the current literature related to the contemporary career and also the revenant theories including the Boundless theory and also the protean theory. The methods that are used in the investigation are also mentioned along with the ways that are used in the process of data analysis. The data for this research work is usually collected from the primary sources using the particular transcript methods and also evaluating the themes from the particular data.
At the end suitable conclusion regarding the subject is also drawn, which will help in the matter of evaluating the efficiency of the current study and also the effectiveness of the contemporary theories. With the help of the current theory, it is possible to deal with current changes in the traditional training program that helps in the matter of acquiring skills for the young graduate candidates.
Discrimination in the workplace has also been one of the major issues that have been faced by the women. This easy will also focus on the issues that are faced by the women due to discrimination in the workplace.
Boundaryless Theory
Blustein (2014), has suggested about the importance of the traditional theories of training that helps in the basic skill development of young job aspirants. With the help of the Boundaryless career theory, it is possible to imply the career developmental model that helps in the matter related to overall career build up. The implication of this theory is more relevant in the fast changing world of the modern days. The resonating power of the Boundaryless theory helps within the temporary set up of an organization and helps in the process of career development. According to Patton (2016), the elements of the Boundaryless theory helps in the process of incorporating better understanding of the skills that helps in the process of improving the working skills of the inexperienced workers. The main advantage of this theory is that it develops wide range of skills among the workers and helps them to adjust in a wide range of conditions in the workplace and they develop the skills to perform in different types of job profiles. On the other hand McMahon (2016), have argued upon the fact that with the application of this theory in the career development model, it is not possible for the candidates to acquire the skills related to needs of a particular organization. In other words, it is not possible for the workers to have specialized skills on the workplace of a particular department of the company.
Sampson et al. (2014), have mentioned about the importance of re-approacment that helps in the overall policies related to the career development process. With the help of this element, it is possible to understand the theories related to the fragmentation of the career. It is also possible to correctly interpret the needs of the career with the help of the elements of this career. Hence, it can enable the workers to deal with the needs that they have to acquire the skills that are needed to get quick promotion by improving upon the ability to learn new things quickly. The success level of the career can also be approached that can ensure that the career of the people gets enough protection from the people of the society. The success of individual career depends on the underlying theories that are applied and also on the context of the skills that are being acquired in the overall process. The definition of the career development helps in the overall process of engaging with the skills that are needed in the workplace. It is also important in the context that the success rate of the career will also depend on the learning and skill acquiring capability of individuals. The subjective and objectives role of the career are also important part that helps to develop the future of individual level of career.
Chan et al. (2015), have mentioned about the importance of different attributes related to the Boundaryless theory that can help in the process of overall success. This includes inter organizational mobility and extra organizational mobility. With the help of the skills that are developed by both intra and extra-organizational mobility, it is possible for the candidates to acquire the skills related to the job development and also have the capacity to deal with all types of work challenges. Nevertheless, one of the main issues related with the skills of mobility is that a candidate can easily switch over or change the jobs that can have the ability to deal with all the changes related to the work life balance. It is also possible to deal with all the changes that occur within the workplace. On respective from the point of view of the employers it is not possible for them to retain the workers as they have the ability to switch over the jobs.
The success level of the career depends on individual capability to learn in quick process of time. It is also possible to have the ability to deal with the consequence of most of the workers in order to help them deal with all types of process.
Protean Theory in Career Development
With the help of the application of the protean theory of career development, it is possible to describe the individual needs of the career that will help them in the process of having secured future of the company. According to Sharf (2016), this theory has been applied in the process of dealing with most of the contemporary issues in the workplace. This theory was initiated in the period of 1976, which helps in the overall process of the dealing with the matters related to lack of experience in the workplace.
Patton and McMahon (2014), have added in the context that the application of the protean career can help to deal with the matter of reflecting the progress in the career development process. The self-fulliment of the psychological balance can help to provide the matters related to high level of job satisfaction. With high level of psychological success, it is possible for the workers to get the motivation that is needed for the process of the success development. The psychological success can also be measured with the help of the elements of the subjective success.
Discrimination in the Workplace
The application of both the above mentioned theories within the workplace has one of the best ways to deal with the workplace balance that has the ability to deal with most of the challenges that are caused due to discrimination among women in the workplace. According to Herrbach and Mignonac (2012), in most of the workplaces, it is common for the female candidates being judged by their dress and also appreances.
There is also extra pressure on women to look attractive in the workplace in order to make improvement in the career. Due to lack of leadership capability, they has to face challenge while making important decisions and also reaching to the top post of an organisation.
According to Park et al. (2016), during the time of pregnancy a woman face even more challenge due to the fact that in most of the organisation there is no provision for special paid leave packages during the time of delivery of the baby. Due to lack of physical capabilities also common for women to not able to withstand the stress of working long hours
The research work of Carter (2016), has mentioned that more than 70% of the women in the workplace are the victim of general discrimination that can lead to one of the most common causes of issues in the workplace and can also lead to the lowering of the productivity in the company.
Marfelt and Muhr (2014), have added in the context that due to the fact that most of the women face gender discrimination at the beginning of the career, it can be one of the most De-motivating factors, that can lead to poor gender discrimination. Sexual harassment and Eve Teasing a few of the common women issues that are faced within an organisation, where safety environment for women are not built. In Spite of the implementing strict legal actions against gender discrimination and also harassment of women, there are many companies which do not follow this technique. Many people within an organisation also have lesser respect towards women as they feel that women are not capable of making and effective manager and also lack the ability to take effective decisions during the time of challenges.
The application of boundary less and protean theory has allowed a young woman job seeking candidate to establish herself against all odds of gender discrimination to have the motivation in order to overcome the challenges. The elements of the boundary less theory can allow the women to adjust in all kind of workplace situations. On the other hand the application of protean theory can have wide range of application in a young woman’s job career that can allow them to identify the challenges and also help them in the matters related to working in different workplace condition.
The methodology for this research work includes Collection of data that is well you went to workplace discrimination. The investigators have mainly focused on collecting primary data, which is based on conducting interview on women who have faced harassment in the workplace due to gender discrimination.
Semi structured interview is framed in order to collect data with the help of qualitative method that is designed with the help of predetermined set of open questions. This can also allow the interviewer to form thematic analysis of the information that is being gathered with the help of conducting interview. The interviewer can also focus on specific topics of the interview in order to collect accurate data.
Keeping a record of the conversation during the time of interview is also important as it will help the researcher to get the information for later purpose. The technique of recorded verbatim is applied in the context to ensure that the conversation of interview can be listened later in order to focus on the primary areas of the subject.
In order to properly conduct this research and collect accurate data the researchers have selected 10 women’s of young age who has been the victim of gender discrimination during the early Period of the carriers.
The researchers have also collected secondary data from the previously conducted investigation related to challenges of women in the workplace during the early period of their careers. The theories that are obtained from the previous research work have helped to compare the condition of women in the workplace and also suggests them the ways to overcome.
Qualitative method of data analysis is used in this research work, in order to better evaluate the present conditions of women using various relevant themes of the topic. The data that is obtained from the themes has helped to derive suitable conclusion about the condition of women in the workplace.
The aim of the current research work is to evaluate the challenges that are faced by young women job seekers in the workplace, due to the consequence of the job seekers. The data that is collected from the interview of young working women is analyzed using relevant themes related to the workplaces challenges that are encountered by women.
Theme 1: Challenges of Women in the Workplace
From the response that is provided by the interviewee in the given case it is clear that the challenge of being mother and taking care of young children has been the major challenge during initial Period of the career. The woman has to change the working timing due to the fact that she also has to take care of the children during most of the time of the day. In the context of this challenge it is important that a woman get proper support from the family site, which can help them to have proper work life balance. It is the duty of the employer to provide the option of rearranging working schedule according to the choice of the woman. It is also essential in this context to ensure that proper support is received from the management of an organisation in order to improve the performance of the woman. It is also evident from the fact that most of the women have to face the ethical dilemma of choosing the correct decisions regarding the fact that they have to maintain a balance for the work life balance in the context of most of the cases.
From the findings of Newman (2014), it is clear that every working mother need to provided special privilege due to the fact that it is important for them to have the ability to look after the needs of the baby and also have the opportunity work in the atmosphere that will help them to have better productivity and also have the capacity to deal with most of the consequence of the working in the environment for improving the skills and productivity.
From the interview, it is clear that with high level of working efficiency, it is possible for every woman to have the determination to overcome all the challenges in the workplace. For effective working capability of the women can have serious improvement in the working capability.
Dominating nature of the male members in the society and also in the workplace of various organisations has been the major challenge for female working candidates. Due to the stereotype mentality of the society regarding women and their poor ability to make decisions under critical condition has made practical life of women in the workplace extremely difficult. Phillips (2016), have mentioned evidence of the cases where female candidates even with similar decision making capability or not awarded with timely promotions. With the help of the stereotypic mentality, the men in the society have imposed use mental pressure on women candidates, which forces them to perform beyond their working capability. It is also important to consider the fact that most of the women in the workplace do not display the courage to take initiative in the decision making process and also get them proper recognition.
From the data of the interview, it is also evident about the fact that the looks and appreance of the women also plays a major role in deciding the job status of the women. For example it has been seen that attractive looking women get special benefits from the mail employees, which is another level of discrimination within the female workers of an organisation. It is one of the unethical duties of the company managers to discriminate the women based on their beauty and attractiveness. From the data that is obtained from the interview it is clear that unattractive women are the victims of neglect and harassment in the workplace and also has to deal with the challenge of working in unhealthy atmospheric conditions.
According to Dalton et al. (2014), it is common for the men to have some psychological attraction over the attractive looking women and also provide them with special and extra benefit and also provide them with special and extra benefit that is not within their deserving capability. With the help of most of the most of the working capability, it is possible to deal with the challenges that are faced by the women in the workplaces.
From the interview transcript “Being a woman especially a black woman you have to stand out a bit more than a white male” it is clear that the black and unattractive looking women have to face more challenge in the workplace due to fact that men are most of the times in favour of the attractive looking women.
However, as the interviewee also said that “Yes… my husband and I both have a good …….To be fair I would readily look for another job to give him that freedom too I suppose” it was clear that with the help of the support of the few of the male members it is possible to have the most effective ways to deal with the challenges in the workplace.
Theme 2: Ways to deal with Workforce Challenges for Women
From the interview it is clear that in order to have better prospect in the carrier it is important for every woman to overcome the gender discrimination challenges that can be achieved by having high level of confidence and efficient decision making capability. As in the opinion of Adams et al. (2014), it is important for every individual women to have full support of family members and also colleagues in order to deal with discrimination issues. Having a cleared intention about the objectives regarding the career is also an important aspect. Getting the right kind of motivation from the employer is also an important part in dealing with the challenges of workplace.
Every organisation which employees women candidates needs to have special privilege policies and also ensure that strict action are being taken against anyone, who violates the respect level of women. This can allow every woman to make better prospect of the career using the boundaryless and protean theory development. Every woman also needs to evaluate the importance of their career in the society and also understand the need of working flexibility in order to maintain perfect work life balance. Dealing with the stress and pressure of performance also needs to be evaluated properly in order to work in a healthy and safe environment.
Conclusion and Limitations:
It is important for every job seeking candidates to acquire proper skills and knowledge that is needed for better performance in the workplace. Discrimination of women in the workplace has been one of the major challenges of young individuals. The discrimination in the workplace denies the woman to get all kind of facilities and advantages in the workplace and also the chance to have a better career prospect. From the thematic analysis in the discussion part it is clear that most of the woman are neglected and denied from getting equal career opportunity and also the chance to enhance their knowledge power. The an attractive woman also has another disadvantage, due to the fact that most of the men employers have the habit to provide extra working benefit to the attractive looking female candidates. In the perspective, it can be said that it is important to note about the higher level of confidence among the workers are important part to deal with all the working class of people that can help them to deal with the challenges of the workplace and also ensure that they are not de-motivated due to the fact that most of the ethical dilemmas they face in the working career to make a proper decisions. The society also plays a crucial role in this case to provide encouragement to the women and help them to make better contribution for the development of the society.
The main limitations in this study are the lack of proper data from the primary sources. As most of the women are not comfortable to share information related to their experience in the workplace, the researchers had to depend on limited amount of information to deal with all the consequence of the women in the workplace and also ensure proper guidance is provided to the women.
I strongly believe to the fact that is society to progress effectively it is important for both men and women to participate equally in the workplace and economic development. Discrimination in the workplace against women in the modern days is one of the major social issues and I believe it is important for the society to undergo change in order to provide support to these women. I would strongly recommend every woman to have full courage and confidence in order to make decisions related to that area at the very initial stage which will ensure that they are able to build a strong future. I must also mention from the research work and the data that is collected from the interview it is clearly evident that strong support from family and high motivating factors can help every woman to overcome the challenges in the workplace that is caused due to discrimination
