An article or any write-up is helpful is throwing light in a new topic or discusses about a subject that have been already discussed before. However, it is important that the article should be presented well so that the readers would not find any issue while reading. In addition to this, it should be presented in such a manner so that it could be used by future researchers.
The critique of the article, ‘Leadership communication in project management’ will help in understanding the aspects that are necessary to incorporate while carrying out the research on a particular topic. The critique will evaluate the abstract, the introduction, the literature review, the research methodology, the data analysis and the conclusion and the recommendations. The critique will point out the negative and positive points of the research work. The readers will find it helpful, as it will point out the factors that are necessary in the research work. The positive points will help the readers in understanding the importance of the aspects that makes a research paper strong. The negative points will points the factors that have not been incorporated in the research work and that should not be missed to make the paper complete.
Abstract can be defined as a brief summary of the entire research paper (Pickard 2013). It is presented in the beginning of the research paper so that the readers get an idea about the research paper and the factors that would be discussed in the paper (Eichler 2013). An abstract should be written in such a manner so that the readers would be able to get an entire idea about the research before even starting to read the research paper (Baskerville and Wood-Harper 2016).
The abstract of the article has been written properly. The abstract is short, simple, and talked about the important things that are there in the article (Jackson 2014). It started with the purpose of the research, which the readers will first look for. The author did not miss out in explaining of the important topics that would be used in the research (Sparkes and Smith 2013). In a line, the author explains the core idea of the subject on which the research is based on. The methods of the research are being mentioned in the abstract. A reader will also have an idea about the types of research methods that could be applied in this type of research. The readers will get to know about the research work just by reading the abstract of the research work. The results of the research have also being mentioned in the abstract along with the further decryption of the implications of the research work. The author did not limit the research work to the limitations the research work but also talked about the usage of the research work in the real world and the way it will help the managers (Cortina, Aguinis and DeShon 2017). The conclusion and recommendation is also mentioned in the abstract. The authors precisely talked about the conclusion of research work as well bit also talked about the recommendations that would help the managers (Travers 2014).
The author has mentioned all the aspects of the research in the abstract (Lyon, Mšllering and Saunders 2015). Starting from the purpose and in one line the person has given an idea about the literature review. The authors has constructed the abstracts in such a manner so that the readers would not have any doubt regarding the subject of the research (Shrout and Fiske 2014). The abstract can be said to the toughest part of the research work, as the author has to present the entire idea in a small paragraph with limited word count (McCusker and Gunaydin 2015). Thus, if the author has been able to pull out the abstract well, half job is done as far as the research is concerned.
As the word suggests, introduction help the author to introduce thee readers with the topic of the research work. The subject is mentioned in detail (Johnson 2014). The author has to make the readers understand the importance of the research work through the introduction. The readers would get the interest about the paper with the help of the introduction. The status of the topic is also mentioned in the research paper (Bucy and Holbert 2014). Once the status of the topic is mentioned in the introduction, the readers will understand the reasons behind carrying out the research work. In other words, the readers should be convinced that there is problem and the research paper will help in solving the problem of the research work (Ivankova 2014). The readers should get the answer to the question ‘will the research would throw some light in the existing problem?’ while they are reading the introduction (Baronov 2015).
In the present article, the introduction part is short. The length of the introduction does not matter of it explains all the aspects that should be there in the introductions (Earley 2014). The author started well by explaining about leadership and the way the history of leadership has developed over the period (Creswell 2013). The author then moved on with explaining the factors that would be reviewed in the paper. However, some of the important aspects are lacking in the introduction. As it has been explained that problem and reason for carrying out the research work should be mentioned in the introduction but this part is missing in the introduction of the article (Pickard 2013). The author should have separately mentioned the problem, the aim of the research and the objective behind carrying out the research work. It would have been easier for the readers to get a precise idea regarding the resin behind carrying out the research work (Eichler 2013). Even though the author talks that should be reviewed in the paper, however, the exact problems are not stated in the paper. A research paper can be called complete when then readers would not face any difficulty in locating the things that is important for a research paper (Baskerville and Wood-Harper 2016). On the contrary, the readers will not only face problem in getting the exact reasons being carrying out the research but will also not have full information about the research paper (Jackson 2014). If they are not being able to grow interest on the topic, the reader may not look any further to know the importance of the research paper.
The literature review can be said to be the base of the research paper (Sparkes and Smith 2013). Once the base is created the research then carried out further research on the topic. The literature review helps in creating a rapport with the audience (Cortina, Aguinis and DeShon 2017). The audience will be able to get an idea about the past research work that have been done on the topic (Travers 2014). They will be able to get an idea on the work on which the research is based on. On the other hand, the literature review helps in presenting the secondary research. As a result, it is important that the literature review should be mentioned in detail.
In the present article, the author has mentioned the literature review in detail so that the readers would not have any issues in understanding the aspects of the research work (Lyon, Mšllering and Saunders 2015). Even though, he has not mentioned separately he is reviewing the literature but he has discussed the topics that are important for the research work in detail (Shrout and Fiske 2014). The authors started with describing leadership the importance of leadership. The author has discussed the things that have been mentioned by other authors regarding leadership. He mentioned the names of the people who have introduced different types of leadership and the challenges of the leadership. The authors then moved in with discussing the importance of leadership for projects manager and the way it will help them in handling the junior employees. The types of leadership that should be adapted by the construction managers is also mentioned in the literary review. The types of leadership styles are mentioned in detail. The literature review will be highly useful for the future researchers as they will get all the information about the leadership styles in this article. After explaining the leadership styles, the author then moved on with discussing the skills and roles of the project managers. The line, ‘In this paper the difference between leadership as a communication skill and communication as a leadership skill is defined as follows’ throws light on the fact that the authors is clear about the things that he is going in the paper. He wants the readers to understand the difference of the topics in detail. He clearly portrays the effect on one on the other. The authors then moved on with discussing the communications skills of the project managers, the leadership communication in project management and the communication skills and leadership. The author has left no stone unturned in explaining the topics in detail.
In the following research paper, the main aim of the paper to analyse the importance of the characteristics that a construction project manager should possess in order to ensure successful communication. A qualitative research methodology has been used in this paper, where a selected group of quantity surveyors, construction managers, engineers, architects and project managers are taken into consideration. The research method is based on a positivism approach. It helps in providing the research with possibilities of exploring the factors affecting the subject of the research with regards to the data collection and interpretation of the data through gained observation. Positive approach in the following research paper has used a deductive approach, based on the theories that have been stated earlier by the researchers in regards to the topic (Baskerville and Wood-Harper 2016). It helps in checking the possibilities associated with the provided data.
Communication skills and leadership consists of various layers that would help in expanding skills of the leader and portray an effective communication pattern. The communication skills of the managers become quite complicated in nature with respect to its responsibilities associated. The leadership communication skills that have been described in this research paper has been stated in the form of three forms, namely core communication, managerial communication and corporate communication (Panneerselvam 2014). All the effective communication of the manager depends upon the core communication skills of the individual. It is quite important for the leader of the organization to master the skills of the core communication capabilities. The managerial communication abilities are build on the basis of the core capabilities. Thirdly corporate communication involves the expansion to be undertaken from the managerial skills that would relate to a much complicated responsibility for the manager (Henwood 2014).
The research methodology of the paper is based on this criteria to be tested by the project manager. In order to ascertain the communicative approaches of the individual, these skills are quite broadly classified in nature. The categories in which the communication layers have been classified in quite broad, it gets too difficult for the researcher to differentiate the characteristics of the individual between core communication, managerial communication and corporate communication (Glesne 2015). Hence, it could be stated that the research methodology used in this research paper is quite effective in nature, yet, it could have been classified further in a much detailed approach.
A sample size that has been taken into consideration in this research paper was 302. 302 questionnaires were sent out to different individuals who have been quantity surveyors, construction managers, engineers, project managers and engineers. It has been seen that the total response rate was 32%. It is significant in respect of the reliability of the response rate that 72% of the responses received were from project managers. However, the responses from the project managers did not distort the response data. The questionnaire aimed to determine the characteristics of the construction project manger that one must possess to communicate effectively with their team members. It is important to determine the leadership style of a project manager, because it influences the successful execution of the project, the cooperation between the team members and the cooperation between the team and the project manager. Based on this criteria the data analysis of the respondents were taken into consideration in this research paper.
This aspect has been quite valuable in comprehending the leadership style that must be needed by the project manager. The researcher has induced a table that consists of the characteristics of the project manager. The table consists of 9 columns. Column 1 shows the characteristics of a construction project manager. Columns 2 to 7 present the responses in percentages; column 8 depicts the average of the respondents’ answers to the question regarding the characteristics of construction project manager and column 9 the ranking in decreasing order. The ‘none’ responses were not taken into account in calculating the average. The characteristic that has been listed in analysing the extracted data from the questionnaires collected has been considered extremely important for the construction project manager. This would help in the execution of the project successfully. The project manager must possess all these communication qualities in order to develop trust, collaboration and unity in teamwork (DePoy and Gitlin 2015). They would successfully share the vision and mission of the project being executed.
Data analysis criteria in this research paper have been quite appropriate in analysing the skills of communication of the project manager. The qualitative approach has been quite effective in inducing the existence of the qualities among the individuals that would be efficient enough to formulate the communicative and leadership styles of the project managers.
Critique for Conclusion
The last part of the article, the conclusion and then recommendations part should be done properly and precisely as it sums up the findings of the research and the implications of the findings in the research paper (McCusker and Gunaydin 2015). The authors do not give any new information in the last part but gives an overall idea on the things that have been deduced after carrying out the research work (Johnson 2014).
The conclusion and the recommendations part have been mentioned properly in the research paper. The researcher has divided the findings in parts properly so that the readers would not face any issues in identifying the areas where the researcher has thrown light on. The author has summed up the characteristics of the project managers that would be helpful in making the employees work in a new project (Bucy and Holbert 2014). The papers could be used by the project managers in the real world. Moving on, the author has summed up the types of leadership styles that will be helpful in managing the employees. The researcher has mentioned the types of leadership styles like the Fiedler leadership style, the visionary leadership style, the applications of Theory Y of McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y style and the Situational leadership style. After discussing the types of the leadership styles, the author has mentioned the applications of the leadership styles in different aspects of workplace and the way it will help in bringing out the best from the employees of an organization. The managers will know the situation were the correct leadership style could be applied. The authors then related the leadership styles with then characteristics of the project managers that will be helpful in proper execution of any project work. The author ended the research paper by recommending the styles of leadership that will be helpful in handing the employees of the organization. The researcher did not forget to mention the implications of the research paper in the real world. However, the author did not mention the word, recommendation separately in the final chapter. If the author mentioned the recommendation separately, it would be helpful for the readers in locating the work (Ivankova 2014). However, if the readers give a detailed study on the last paragraph of the conclusion and the recommendation chapters, it would have been easily understandable the things that the author wants it imply and the recommendations that he makes based on the findings of the research work (Baronov 2015).
Conclusion
After carrying out the critique of the article, it can be concluded that the author has presented the article in a proper manner so that it could be readily understandable by the readers. The parts that have been done excellently are the abstracts, the literature review and conclusion and recommendations. On the contrary, the introduction, the methodology and the data analysis part could have been improved.
The abstract will help the readers is get an overall idea about the paper. The author has mentioned every aspect that have been covered in the research paper. The literature review has been done is good detail. The conclusion and the recommendation part has done proper justice to the research work. The author has summed up the aspects well and explained the things. The person has given recommendations based on the findings of the research work. The word, recommendation is not being mentioned but if the readers give a thorough study of the last chapter, it would be easily understandable by any readers.
The introduction part lacked some of the vital information. The problems of the research are not being stated properly. The aims and the objectives of carrying out the research work is also not there. The authors started well and talked about the research work but the problems are not mentioned properly. The data analysis and the research methodology parts have been clubbed. The analysis and the methods that have been used in the research work have been mentioned but it would have been better if the authors had separated parts. It would have been easier for the readers to understand the parts well.
