Last seen alive by her maid Louise Bourget at 11:30 (approx.) Probable course of events: X (murderer) was witness of scene between Simon and Jackie in observation saloon and noted where pistol went under settee. After the saloon went vacant X got hold of the pistol. The following have alibis: Jacqueline De Bellefort, Simon Doyle, James Fanthorp, Cornelia Robson and nobody else. Other possibilities: Robbery as a motive.
Conclusions: We can group the following people on board in two classes, those who had a possible motive and those who are free of suspicion.

Group 2Mrs. AllertonTim AllertonCornelia RobsonMiss BowersMrs. OtterbourneJames FanthorpDr. Bessner A few days later the pistol was recovered from the river. It had been thrown overboard and found wrapped in Mrs. Marie Van Schuyler’s velvet stole. Soon after, Louise Bourget, Linnet’s maid, was found dead! She was found stabbed and was holding a piece of a foreign bank note. This set the case to higher degree of difficulty.
Hercule Poirot continued the inquiries. The pearls had been returned to the cabin. Poirot decided to investigate. When he got there he realized that the pearls that were returned were counterfeit! As real as they looked and felt, they were fake. Now, the case was even trickier. The inquiries continued until one day Tim Allerton confessed to being the kleptomaniac who stole Linnet Doyle’s pearls, and the one who replaced them. He would not mention who manufactured the phony pearls.
A day afterward, Mrs.
Otterbourne came to Hercule Poirot and Colonel Race to tell them she knew who committed the murder of Louise Bourget. They sat down in a room and they began to talk. At the moment right when Mrs. Otterbourne was about to reveal who the murderer was, she was shot! The case was getting harder and harder by the day. It came to a point in the investigation where after all the inquiries and happenings that the brilliant detective Hercule Poirot had come to a conclusion, and knew it was right. He was waiting for the right moment to reveal it. Then, he did and it was stated like this: “When Simon was shot at, he wasn’t hit.
Mr. Fanthorp saw him with a red stained handkerchief to his leg. Simon told him to go get Dr. Bessner, while Jackie was being taken to Mrs. Bower’s cabin. There he was left alone, and two minutes was all he needed to commit the crime. Although, it seemed impossible it was very possible. Next, he picked up the pistol from under the settee, ran like a hare to his wife’s cabin, shot her through the head, put the bottle containing red ink on her wash stand (used to put on handkerchief), ran back, grabbed Mrs. Marie Van Schuyler’s velvet stole to muffle the pistol, and wrapped it and shot himself in the leg.
Lastly, he threw the pistol out the window into the Nile! But, there were two halves to the murder- Jackie was the other half. She did not kick the pistol under the settee for no apparent reason. They thought everything out together from the very beginning. The whole thing was going fine until the plan went wrong. Louise Bourget was watchful and saw Simon running. Louise promised to keep her mouth shut for a great deal of money but, when counting the bills Jackie stabbed her. The plan went wrong again, Mrs. Otterbourne saw Jackie go in and out of Louise Bourget’s cabin. Jackie’s cabin was right next to Dr. Bessner’s. We had found during the search through all the cabins, that Dr. Bessner had a revolver located in his. Jackie overheard our conversation with Mrs. Otterbourne, got the revolver, and right when Mrs. Otterbourne was going to reveal who committed the crime, she shot her! There you have it!”
Hercule Poirot has solved another great mystery once again. This crime was long thought out by the two. Their motive was to take control of Linnet’s fortune. If Linnet died Simon would gain control, so Simon and Jackie attempted murder. Simon did not even like Linnet, he was only in love with Jackie. Together with all the money they could do what ever they wanted together. The next day, the ship had stopped to drop off the three dead bodies (Linnet Doyle, Louise Bourget, and Mrs. Otterbourne) and the two bitter criminals (Simon Doyle and Jacqueline De Bellefort).
The theme of this novel is that detectives and law enforcement will catch you no matter how well thought out a crime is and that you will suffer the consequences for what you have done. Therefore, do not commit crimes because you will be caught and your life will be ruined.
