An ecosystem is basically a specific environment as a whole. To include what are called biotic (which are living) and abiotic (which are non living) things. (Simon, Dickey, & Reece, 2019, 2016, 2013) Ecosystems are then further broken down into biomes. (Simon, Dickey, & Reece, 2019, 2016, 2013) This may seem like a complex idea but if you think of it in terms of geography, it makes it a little easier to grasp. If you picture an ecosystem as a map of the United States, for example, the biomes could be the individual states within that massive territory.
Climate plays a large role in how biomes are grouped. (Simon, Dickey, & Reece, 2019, 2016, 2013) There are two main categories of biomes; marine and terrestrial, which is basically land and sea. (Simon, Dickey, & Reece, 2019, 2016, 2013) Once again, these categories are broken down into further categories. We could think of these as the cities within the states. One of these biomes, in Africa, is known as the savanna. (Simon, Dickey, & Reece, 2019, 2016, 2013)
Within this diverse biome elephants can be found and this is the way it should remain.
In order for that to happen, more must be done in to ensure that these creatures are protected. They are currently endangered because people like to hunt them for their tusks in order to make jewelry. (IAC Publishing, LLC, 2019)
A wide variety of wildlife is part of what makes our planet so beautiful and this biodiversity must somehow be preserved. Humans hunting elephants, among other things, is only a portion of the problem.
When you take a look at all the reasons biodiversity is declining; habitats being put at risk, the introduction of invasive species, and even pollution. (Simon, Dickey, & Reece, 2019, 2016, 2013) Sadly, we humans seem to be at the center of it all. All of these things can certainly have an effect on the increase or decrease of not only the elephant population, but other groups of animals as well. This can also have a negative effect on us humans and our planet. As we are all connected to one another in various ways.
In the exponential growth model, one can see that elephants are most likely hunted at a quicker rate than they can reproduce. (Simon, Dickey, & Reece, 2019, 2016, 2013) This is why hunting elephants must be strictly regulated or completely abolished. Therefore, my proposal is to make regulations more strict and punishments more harsh for those who are caught engaging unlawfully in this activity. In the logistic population growth model, we must consider that because elephants are threatened this could directly effect something as simple as mating. (Simon, Dickey, & Reece, 2019, 2016, 2013) Simply because it could effect the male to female ratio if one sex over the other happened to be predominantly targeted in a specific area.
Elephants are not the only animals at risk. There are well over 16,000 species at risk of becoming extinct. (Endangered Species International , 2011) This proposal then should really be acknowledged on a larger scale. Other community populations are at risk and should be protected as well. Our actions have far reaching consequences. It’s time we examine those actions and work toward making changes for the better.
