Characteristics of the project
This project of Design and Analysis of Grinding Attachment was the Machine tool Design project that I executed in the fourth year bachelor’s degree. The grinding operation in a lathe machine is solely performed to obtain excellent surface finishing once the turning operation is completed. This is eventually done to learn about the needed dimensions of portion, which are to be used in the assemblies. Hence, to execute these two important and significant operations on a lathe machine, the designing of grinding attachment is done. The analysis part of this project is done to verify the project. This particular project discusses regarding an attempt to decrease the total time for both loading as well as unloading of any work piece with the preferred surface finish. The project gives a proper description regarding the wheel selection for grinding. The grinding attachment of lathe machine also takes into account the lack of flexibility within the design. This design is then subsequently analyzed on inventor software and thus compared with several theoretical calculations.

My area of work
I was an important member in the project team for designing and analyzing grinding attachment of a lathe machine. I ensured the fact that this project becomes successful. I had significantly worked under the perfect supervision of my team leader and head of the department. In the beginning, I had several doubts about the project. However, my team members and team leader helped me to clear all my doubts and thus I was able to understand the complete project perfectly. This project has even helped me in understanding the entire concepts of grinding attachment as well as lathe machine. My major area of work was to design the grinding attachment of the lathe machine.
My responsibilities throughout the project
I had several significant responsibilities throughout the project. I was given the core responsibility to create the design of the grinding attachment. Since this was my fourth year Machine tool design project, I made sure that the design is made perfectly. Next, I checked the various processes, which are to be executed in the project work. I subsequently customized, examined and assessed the products. I even made the list of the raw materials, required in this project. I kept a record of the data that were taken while calculating. I even analyzed and interpreted the taken data to design and analyse the project. I also arranged for project team meetings that were hold in the end of every week for understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the project.
Comprehending the Theory of the Project
The design indications of any grinding attachment mainly comprise of several mechanical knowledge and functionalities for several equipments. The major equipments of this project involve a motor, a grinding wheel, shafts, mounting plates, belt, bearings and pulleys.
For achieving the objective, this project comprised of some of the significant facts that would have been guaranteeing the accuracy of 20 microns. Three important facts were identified. They were absorption of vibration, attachment rigidity and cylindricity of work piece. For the vibration absorption, the static deflection was 0.0126m. There is a relation between damping ratios and transmissibility. Several materials were taken into consideration. The damping ratio in for the rubber was 0.05. Hence, we selected rubber as the isolator.

The second fact was the rigidity of attachment. When the motor is working in higher speed, it was extremely important to clamp that motor. The mathematical calculations of the project were done by software analysis. The stress analysis result is given in the following table.

The cylindricity of the workpiece is assured for maintaining the circular cross section area. The major factor that solely affected the cylindricity was the forces due to the grinding would not bring perfect results. Hence, deflection of shaft was required.
Engineering knowledge and skills applied in the project
I had utilized various mechanical engineering skills like 3D CAD and analytical thinking in this project. I had even utilized other skills like automated model programming and assembling project deliverables. The other skills that I had used in the Machine tool design were conversion of basic design information as well as requirements into working drawings and designing. Moreover, I knew how to create blueprints for the design purpose of the project. I also drafted the standards and GD&T or Geometric. Dimension and Tolerancing.
Issues
There were several mechanical problems or faults within the project of design and analysis of grinding attachment of a lathe machine. The first and the foremost problem, which I encountered in the project was while designing the wheel. I knew it very well that if the wheel of this grinding attachment would not work perfectly, it is needless to say that the total machine would be working and thus the user would not be able to utilize this machine. The second important problem that we faced was the incorrect list of raw materials. One of my team mates took the responsibility to make the list of the raw materials. However, he was unable to do so and thus our project was getting delayed. The third significant issue that occurred in the project was while the machine motor was designed. The total productivity of the machine depends on this motor. Thus there should not be any mistake in the motor designing.
Solutions
I was extremely happy and satisfied as I was able to solve all the problems of the project with my skills and knowledge of engineering and power of critical thinking. The first issue was with the wheel. I gave a suggestion to my team leader to use soft wheels instead of hard. The hard wheels, although effective, increments the complexities; whereas the soft wheels, although less effective, decrease the overall complexities. The next issue was with the equipments selection. I checked and was able to find out the mistakes. I finally made the new list of materials and thus the project was not delayed anymore. Finally, for the last issue, all of the team members were under tight spot to design the motor perfectly. However, I came forward and took the responsibility to design it. I utilized my engineering knowledge and skills for solving the issue. I designed the motor perfectly and was appreciated by my team leader.
Plan to produce creative and innovative work
We made a plan to produce creative and innovative work by segregating our duties and responsibilities. At first, we had vague ideas about the project, however, soon our doubts were cleared and we were able to understand the project perfectly. Since, this was the final year project; we all were extra conscious about it. We attended various workshops and team meetings to produce better work and finally we were happy to do so with utmost perfection.
The complete project was executed in a specific sequence of all types of collaborative actions amongst the team members and the team leader. Our major goal was to design and analyze the project perfectly so that it could be utilized by the rest of the world. Our head of the department controlled everything and each and every activity was reported to him by our project leader.
Project Overview
This project of Design and Analysis of Grinding Attachment was the fourth year Machine tool design project. I understood the several features and aspects of real time application by this particular project. We were all total four members in the project including our project leader. Our HOD or head of the department was responsible for the total control and funding of the project. We researched about our project study and then were given several responsibilities. We even faced various issues but at the end were able to solve them perfectly. The project became a major success due to our engineering skills and knowledge.
My contribution to work
My major contribution to the work was creating the design of the grinding attachment. This designing part was the most important part of the project and I was happy that I completed the design perfectly. My next contribution to this project was to make the list of raw materials needed in the project. I even solved the three issues faced here and arranged for team meetings and gatherings for the betterment of our project.
