1. Creative leadership is the ability to come up with innovative solutions in the face of a changing situation (Clemson & Thomas, 2012). Focusing on Anthropocene as a topic of discussion in this paper, the people in my community had developed a habit of cutting down trees for various uses. This brought a big challenge to the community such that animals started dying and vegetables dried due to lack of rains. This situation was worrying and as a creative leader, I had to come up with solutions to the problem. Some of the families who depended on fishing and farming as their source of income were also affected by the situation.
The major problem that should be dealt with in this situation is deforestation because it’s the major cause of all the problems being faced by the community. In this case, I would be focusing on measures which would ensure that animals do not lack food and water through advising people to engage in these activities on the alternative ways. Also, I would focus on helping the community at large because without rains many activities cannot take place. I would advise people to look for ways of harvesting water which can help them in future. This water can also be used in farming instead of waiting for rains. Deforestation is one of the dominant influence of climate and environment, therefore, people should avoid it to prevent environmental harm. According to Charles (2014), a creative leader is the one who comes up with innovative ways of changing a situation without necessarily affecting one’s life.
2. I have learnt that to be a creative leader one should have a self-leadership skill. Self-leadership is the ability to understand yourself, what you are doing and where you are going coupled with the ability to control your emotions and behaviours towards there (Chen, 2012). A creative leader should be able to control his or her emotions and behaviours when talking to a group of people to avoid hurting them and also achieve goals. For example, in this case, a creative leader should approach these people with positive attitudes and explain to them the dangers of cutting down trees. Moreover, a Creative leader should be innovative. In this case, a creative leader should tell people other alternative ways or activities they should engage in for their incomes without harming the environment.
Taking from what I have known about a creative leader, I can, therefore, make a good one. I have learnt that a creative leader should be innovative and my innovativeness was reviewed in this case when I tried to explain to the people cutting down trees on what other activities they should engage and still earn income. For those used woods to make furniture, I advised them that even metals can still make good beds and seats. I also advised them that if at all they have to cut those trees they should replace them by planting others. I also learnt that creative leader should be disciplined and set a good example to others. In this case, I started planting trees to show the community its importance and encouraged them to do the same. According to Mirva & Satu (2013), a creative leader should always set a good example for the others.
3. One of the skills of a creative leader which makes me not to be one is self-leadership skill because it entails being able to control your emotions and I, therefore, tend to be carried away by my altitudes. Self-leadership skill is important for a creative leader because it increases the effectiveness of work (Jeanne & Isaacs 2016). In this case, talking to people to stop what they do for a living and switch to something else can be a challenge. This, therefore, entails a lot of courage in order to convince them that what they are doing is not good because some would be asking questions which might offend you. Having this skill, it would be easier to control my emotions and explain to them in a friendly manner the importance of avoiding deforestation no matter how harsh they seem to be.
Moreover, I have learnt that for one to be a creative leader he or she should have good communication skills. Good communication skills are important because it aids in the effective flow of information (Lisa & Anne, 2011). A creative leader without this skill may have a challenge in achieving his or her because effective communication creates a good relationship between the person giving the information and the recipient. In this case, communicating well with these people cutting down trees would enable them to stop the behaviours. I am optimistic that I would in future become a creative leader. In this case, my role model is Justin Trudeau a 23rd and a current prime minister of Canada since 2015. This politician has always portrayed self-leadership in his leadership and this has made him to be one of the most famous and performing leaders in Canada.
4. From this class, I have learnt that a creative leader is the one who is able to come up with possible solutions in a situation where it requires change. For a person to become a creative leader, there are some of the skills which he or she should possess. One of these skills includes self-leadership skill. Self-leadership is the ability to understand own strengths and weaknesses and able to control emotions to achieve a certain goal (Aisha & Anila, 2017). Since a leader meets all kind of people, he or she should have this skill because some people might portray some behaviours which are not pleasing. Moreover, a creative leader should innovative. Innovation is coming up with unique ways of doing things different from what people are used to. In this case, as a creative leader, I should advise people on alternative materials for making their furniture apart from using trees.
Also, I have learnt a creative leader should have good communication skills. Good communication skills help in the efficient flow of information and assists in achieving goals. Proper communication skills create a good relationship between people. For a creative leader to institute a change he or she should be a leading change (Carrie, 2017). He or she should be a good example for the others for that change to be effective. Also, a creative leader should be disciplined and avoid some behaviours which might affect other people and lead to failures.
