DD’s largest major factor total operating expenses is their payroll is nearly 270,000 employees with an average of $9.76 per hour (pay scale, 2 019). DD’s paid out between $3-$4.5 billion dollars in 2018 payroll. DD’s favorite ingredients on coffee is Arabica beans followed by Enriched Unbleached Wheat flour to make America’s favorite donuts. DD uses nearly 74 million kilograms of coffee beans per year and 14 million kilograms of flour a year. More than 3million customers visit DD every day. According to (Ycharts2019), the cost of Arabica coffee beans as of September 2019 was $2.84 per kg and for Enriched Unbleached Wheat flour as of September 2019 was $0.90 per kg. These prices have dropped since September 2016 for the highest price the market has ever seen for the beans at $4.06 and flour at $5.08.

Dunkin Donuts is the longest and most famous coffee/donuts company from 1950 to present and quick service restaurant. It’s also the largest product of baked goods. DD own 39.8% of the market (Statista,2016), DD’s main competitor is Starbucks with a 38.3%with the remaining shares being split among others including International Dairy Queens. Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks comes to a staggering 78.1%, this market can be considered an oligopolistic market
When we refer to the barriers to entry in the coffee industry, they are relatively low to DD, that’s because of the low entry to the market profit margins will decrease within the industry in the long run. The startup costs for this type of industry are not constraining because the united cost over time will not decrease. In other words, it does not require a lot to start a coffee shop. There are certain concerns and factors that need to be considered when entering this type of market. First when entering as an entrepreneur your main concern might be if the business fails in the first 3 years. Another will be considering the post entry conditions and trying to complete with large companies like Dunkin Donuts. You will need to establish your consumer base and gain reliability of the quality of your product to be different from other competitors. Your initial costs must be sent on advertising in order to gain Market Share because “America Runs On Dunkin.” DD is a big company in this industry. Many small coffee shops will think it twice before entering the market. DD may feel the pressure from there other competitors knowing they were one of the first coffee shop in North America and it may be easy to persuade the costumers in buying a different brand. DD should keep on doing what they are doing up to know. Constantly evolving, reevaluating and assessing its product offering and prices in order to keep their success in the marketplace.
Recommendation
Dunkin Donuts should continue the product promotion strategy, taking advantage of holidays and events to offer coupons. By doing so the brand maintains a high sustainable price and reduce cost, while still offering their customers chances to redeem some value for their purchases. This is a strategy that gives the customers a chance to feel like they can redeem loyalty point if they ever feel the need to. At the sometimes they are giving the sell market influence as more customers are appealed to products that offer some form of promotion and more value for their money.
