Ethical behaviour set the standards in which a company or an organization will effectively run its activities. In every firm, organization or institution, there are employees and leaders. Both the employees and the leaders are expected to observe ethical behaviour for smooth running of the organizations in order for them to achieve its goals, mission and visions. However, it is noted with much concern that leaders of any organization play a major role in influencing the ethical behaviour to the minors who work under their authorities.
First and foremost, leaders influence ethical by acting as role model in observing the rule and regulation of the organization. If leaders obey the rules and regulations that are sets, the other junior employees are bound to follow the same foot steps by obeying and respecting the set regulations of the business. Thus through observation of legal strategies, there is development of business ethics and corporate social responsibilities.
Secondly, leaders will also influence the ethical behaviour through integrity strategy. Leaders are supposed to apply their integrity when passing rules and regulation which acts as guideline of ethical behaviour. Through integrity, they should be able to put the rightful judgement and penalties which are driven towards corrections of ill- behaviour, hence avoid policies and penalties of torture. Thus, I leader is made to be ethical by having the leadership qualities which encompasses obedience of regulations and consideration of stake shareholders as well as the employees under his leadership.
The firm’s mission contains statements which communicates the essence of the particular organization to the stake shareholders and the public. This enables the employees to work towards maintaining of that mission without going out of the way. It further includes what the organization is and what it is supposed to be doing. If the company mission is well drafted, then the people working in such organization are properly guided by it. This is done by having an elaboration of the mission through vision and guiding principles.
The policy manuals and the codes of conducts are the main documentary materials which contains simple statements of values. The policy manual gives the employees an overview of rule and regulation, which each and every individual working under the particular organization should observe. The policies contained in policy manual are therefore used a measure whether someone has done an act which is ethical or unethical. In cases unethical act is conceived, the policy manual further guides the leaders on the procedures that he has to follow to impose a corrective measure to evil behaviour.
The codes of conducts contains the list of statement of do and don’t do while the employees are conducting any transaction of the business and among themselves. This helps in encouraging the employees to practice the virtues and deceasing from the vices. The senior management communicate their commitment to the ethical principles of the firm by acknowledging lack of ethical behaviour of their tasks and taking control of the direction.
Bribes and payoffs are two commonly challenging parts in the business of today. The two acts of receiving and giving bribes and payoffs are unethical practices in any business with a mission to achieve. It is therefore necessary that in all level of an organization management, the two should be strictly discouraged. This can done by scrutinizing and screening of the employees in the management level by testing their moral standards especially the virtues of faithfulness and honest as well as trustworthiness.
These characters will very much determine their integrity and if they remain to be trust worthy the others will be discouraged in any these acts. Secondly, it is important that the organization rules and regulation should put in places fierce punishments and penalties to individuals involved in any sort of corruption such a these.
This will discourage the parties involved and stop them to see bribes and payoffs as an advantage. When they contemplate on the enormous price tag it carries, it is likely that nobody who will dear to do it. Thirdly, the salaries should be set to standard in accordance with the costs of the living standards at any particular time. The employer should provide easy way for the employees to obtain money in form of loans and other findings
Ethical standards are different from cultures. Ethical standards deal with things or acts which are of values and normal accepted by the firm’s management. Cultures are the normal practices which go on in an organization. These practices may be either based on values or on vices. If the culture nurtures values and good intents of the company, then, these cultures perhaps may resemble the ethical standards. Otherwise, if the cultures are detrimental by nurturing the vices such as bribing irresponsibility, and non- accountability of duties, then, there is no way this kind of culture can be termed as the set ethical standard.
