As a part of a community-strengthening project, I have the responsibility to help the people from the community through the community building program. This paper will discuss the ethical practice in helping the profession. Training courses to help women to acquire skills is part of the community strengthening program. An indigenous worker of another organization approached me to conduct a program that will help the women from the indigenous community to re-enter in the paid workforce. I have the responsibility to organize the program and arranging the fund and planning of the program. I am not involved with the day to day activities of the program. As a part of this program, I have to manage a critical situation related to the safety of the children of the trainee women. I have to take care of these children, and on the other hand, my action can interrupt the right and autonomy of the community. I have to manage the dilemma through an ethical decision making model and the standpoint of the center and the risk management issues of these children.
Ethics is a system of moral principles. Ethics is concerned with identifying the right way of people’s actions (Parrott, 2014). The right conduct will deliver the highest good for the society and other human beings. To live a happy and satisfying life, what should be done is identified by Ethics. Ethics provide an answer regarding human morality by analysing concept like good, right, evil, virtue, and vice, wrong, and justice (Komi?, Maruši? & Maruši?, 2015).
The ethical dilemma is a problem in the procedure of decision making. The individual has two possible options, which are not acceptable from the moral point of view, and the person has to choose between these two options, which creates an ethical dilemma (Anderson & Anderson, 2014). Solving ethical dilemma is difficult as it is a complicated challenge. Focusing on the ethical dilemma is vital for the practicing profession. The person in the moral dilemma has to analyse two options and choose the right choice and deliver the highest benefit to society and other human beings. Taking the decision by evaluating the ethical point of view, helps me to promote the dignity, welfare of all people, social justice (Shapiro & Stefkovich, 2016). As a human being, I get assistance from the result of morality analysis.
In the provided case study named “Community Education,” the identified ethical dilemma will be discussed here. As a part of the community strengthening program, I have the responsibility to resolve obstacles and make an ethically right decision. To ensure the safety and care of trainee women’s children, I approached the leader of the group. But that was not satisfying as the group leader stated that these children were being cared for adequately by the most senior child of the group. The ethical dilemma present in this case study is identified. There are two options, among them, I have to choose one option. The first option is, as a part of the center, I have the responsibility to take care of those children and provide safety. It will help trainee women to concentrate on the training program. Another option is, the initiative taken by me can hamper the right and autonomy of the indigenous community. Should I ensure the safety of these children or priorities the rights and autonomy of the indigenous community? Another ethical dilemma is present in the case study. Implementing the western tradition of children’s care can be a good option for these children from the indigenous community. But this action can hamper the autonomy and the right of these people. They can judge this initiative as a way of colonizing and oppressive practices. In my opinion, the first identified ethical dilemma, which is the conflict of the safety of the children between the right and autonomy of the indigenous people, is more important for this case study. The ethical dilemma is based on a more practical issue like the safety of the children and the promotion of the right and autonomy of the community (Schwartz, 2016).
An ethical decision making model is the framework, which is used to identify principals and assure the principals are followed (Banks, 2016). By using this framework, people can take an ethical decisions from a moral dilemma. This inclusive model is based on four interlinked dimensions, which are accountability, cultural sensitivity, consultation, and critical reflection (McAuliffe, 2014). Certain factors are such as defining the ethical dilemma, mapping legitimacy, gathering information, considering alternative approaches, and action and engaging in critical analysis and evaluation are connected with this model (McAuliffe, 2014). The potential value of this model is, it helps people to make an ethical decision, which is moral by nature, by analysing the ethical dilemma.
In this part, the ethical decision making model will be applied in the case study. At first, the nature of ethical dilemmas will be discussed. The moral dilemma is the situation in which the individual has to choose between two options. These two options are not able to resolve the issue in an ethically approved approach (Fetherstonhaugh et al., 2017). The defining dilemma step helped me to identify two possibilities. I have two options to resolve the dilemma. I have the responsibility to provide safety to those children. On the other hand, to fulfill the duty, I have to take a specific decision which can hamper the autonomy and right of the indigenous people of the community. I have two options. I have to choose one option to resolve the issue by making ethical evaluations. The mapping legitimacy helped me to identify who will be affected by moral decisions (Chase, 2015). This step helped me to understand the necessity of discussing this issue with other people who have precise knowledge about these indigenous people. Whether involving these people in the decision making process will be helpful for me or not can be identified by this step. In this case, I discussed the issue with the leader of the group to understand the safety issue of the children. The next important step is gathering information step. This step helped me to the decision making the process by gathering information from appropriate guidelines and protocols (Eltaiba, 2019). To help the decision making the procedure, I tried to collect information. I have talked with the person who is from the community and know the culture of the community. The next step is alternative approaches, which helped me to evaluate every possible action. This step has helped me to choose the option and appropriately act according to the option. In this case, while assessing alternative approaches, I identified that there are two probable actions among which I have to choose one, which is the most appropriate. The next step is critical analysis and evaluation. In this step, I have to engage with the critical analysis and assessment of the ethical dilemma. This initiative will be beneficial in the future as it will help me to develop a secure decision making process and practices (O’Donnell et al., 2018). In this case, the critical analysis and evaluation helped me to understand the decision making procedure (Baker & Warburton, 2015). In the future, to resolve any ethical dilemma with an appropriate method and steps. In the future, to practice ethically, this part will help me.
The case study will be analyzed through the 4 ‘lenses’ model, which contains cultural sensitivity, consultation, accountability, and critical reflection. To follow the Accountability steps, I have to consider the professional, legal, and organizational obligation and develop an ethical decision, which will be wholly justified and articulated (McAuliffe, 2014). In this case study, I had to evaluate the responsibilities to build a moral decision. To follow the Critical reflection, I have to make decisions, which can be assessed by others, to develop in the future. In this case study, I have to take the decision, and while taking the decision, other people have the opportunity to recheck my decision. According to cultural sensitivity, I must make a culturally perfect decision by evaluating the differing value positions (Schwartz, 2016). While taking the decision, I had to take a culturally appropriate decision which will not create an impact on the culture of the community. In the consultation part, I had to consult the issue with the leader of the group. I was interested in collecting the leader’s accountability and cultural sensitivity (Kocet & Herlihy, 2014). That initiative was not successful. After applying this model, it can be said that to resolve the ethical dilemma implication of this model can be helpful to develop the appropriate decision.
Another ethical dilemma in this case study is the implication of the western culture of children care in the community can be a good option or the importance of the right and autonomy of this community. To ensure safety and care, I can follow the western children’s care in the community, and that can be helpful for the children. But taking that initiative can hamper the autonomy and right of the community. They can judge my action as a part of interference. The limitation of this approach is, the second ethical dilemma is less critical than the first moral dilemma. The implication of the inclusive model in the second ethical dilemma is severe. It will be challenging to complete all the steps of the model in the second dilemma (Banks, 2015).
Thus, in the end, it can be stated that to manage the ethical dilemma in practice, a person should use the inclusion model. The implication of the ethical decision model in the ethical decision making procedure will develop moral choices by evaluating the morality issue and other perspectives.
