From the time we rise in the morning until we pillow our head at night we have made hundreds of choices throughout a single day. Every time we make a choice we face a possible blessing or regret. Our choices are most surely determined by situational surroundings. How will this benefit me? How will this benefit others? How will this make me feel? Is this a moral or an immoral decision? Will I be judged by my decision? Does this decision cause fear for myself? How will my peers view my decision? Will my decision to bring condemnation? Can I negate the choices on someone else? The mind is an incredible thing, all of these thoughts running through our minds.
Different emotions are felt for each question. The average individual makes a choice based strictly on these emotional feelings. In most cases, we will go with a non-conflicting answer to please all and not cause themselves to be viewed in a negative light.
Until an individual overcomes this emotional desire to please, they will never be a leader they will always remain a follower.
There is a statement in the Bible that says “The truth will set you free.” No one is ever made better by negating the truth especially the individual who does so. Let’s look at this in a very simple form. The role of a parent is to be honest with children no matter the child’s emotional despondency to the truth. If we allow the child’s emotional desire to negate the truth we have set the child on a course for destruction.
We have told the child their emotions are more important than the truth. We have all seen examples of this. Children who act out their emotions to get what they desire. Think about all the negative principles we are teaching a child. Principals will fight their entire life. Anxiety the child will face his or her entire life realizing that their emotions do not matter as much to others as they did the parents or themselves. We have given them a life of conflict instead of community. We have installed a philosophy that as long as you are happy all is good, this is an untruth. Unless this is corrected this child will have a difficult life accepting truth over emotion.
The choice for truth is always the correct answer. It is not always the easiest answer. It is not always a popular answer. It is not always the most accepted answer. However, it is always the right answer.
The choices that are always the hardest for an individual are those that directly affect the individual due to a lack of self-discipline. Most go with the easy out not spending but mere seconds contemplating the outcome. Is not choices that paves the path of our lives? Do success and regret rest solely on the choices one makes? Not only on long-term choices but also daily decisions. It is important that at an early age we understand the magnitude of our choices how they decide the path that our life will take. Simple decisions like who our friends are, the desire to take school seriously, the ability to be courteous and mannerly in public, all of these decisions, every one of this choice is like a magnet pulling us in one direction or another.
What direction do you wish to go to? It’s important that you know as to make the choices to lead you to that place. How do we choose to be successful? What do those choices look like? Many of them have already discussed in prior chapters.
Every day should be a rung on the ladder to the life you desire to lead. Simple things like getting up 1 hour earlier to read a book about your career. Working out 30 minutes longer to gain the strength level you desire. Skipping that bowl of ice cream you have every night to lose a pound or two.
Many times we familiarize our choices as doing. Often it is not to start doing something, but to stop doing something to abandon poor choices we have made or are making. Declaring that the things that slow down the climb on the ladder of success can no longer be kept. Imagine bad habits as weights slowing you down. Where could you be on this ladder if you could break the cycle of bad decisions? We as humans have this habit of kicking the can until we run out of the street. We are always going to do better tomorrow, yet tomorrow never comes. We are going through life subconsciously lying to ourselves in the name of good intentions. One day we will be left with nothing more than regret for not making dreams a reality. Self-discipline is the key to making the right choices. This is a great eye-opener. The difference between the great and the mediocre is the choice to apply self-discipline, to desire a change of one’s will more than the fear of pain. In every case, self-disciplined must be applied. We allow our emotions to rule the day. The problem with this is 9 out of 10 times your emotions will not choose the right answer but the less painful answer. At some point, we have to stop allowing your emotions and feelings to decide who we are. Another major problem incorrectly guiding our life is unnecessary peer pressure. We allow friends, family, and peers to tell us who we are. Do we really need someone to tell us who we are? Do we need someone to tell us what we should do for a career? Do we need someone to tell us where we should live? The answer is an astounding No! Although we do it every day. Why? Lack of self-confidence. Letting our emotions decide, letting others decide, and in the end we are left with a void wondering where our life went. We allowed others to live it, we gave it away. We allowed emotional fears to decide for us. Make a choice today! It is your life and you will make choices based on individual goals, desires, and the dying desire in your gut.
