Exposition: Julian takes his mother on the bus to a reducing class at the Y. his mother has to lose twenty pounds on account of her blood pressure. His mother struggles trough out the story with black people and memories.
Rising action: The bus stops and a well-dressed African American man enters and sits down.
, The bus stops again, and a black woman boards with her young son. Julian and the black woman both pull the signal cord at the same time to get off the bus. Julian realizes with horror that his mother will try to give Carver a nickel as she does with all little children.
Climax: Carver’s mother takes offense. Like, really takes offense. She smacks Julian’s mother her fist and purse, knocking her down. Julian doesn’t expect the violent act, but he still thinks it’s all for the best—she learned a lesson, and now she’s set up for a big redemptive moment that will change her life forever.
Falling action: Julian’s mother was sitting on the sidewalk. Julian being angry and telling her he warned not to give the little boy a penny. He stood over her for a minute and looked her in the face.Julian said: “You got exactly what you deserved,” he said. “Now get up.”
Resolution: Julian’s mother collapses, asks for her dead husband and her childhood nanny, and Julian runs off in tears, screaming for help.
