The subsequent report will be a brief explanation of the Evidence based Nursing that is a revolutionary new concept in the medical profession. With the changes in trends the concept has various benefits for the entire industry. The study will describe about various nursing theories, its benefits, limitations and challenges faced in the implementation of nursing procedures. Also, the essay will be sharing some of the best practices that could be adopted to connect the evidences into real practices (George, 2010).
As the name suggests, nursing means the personalized medical care of an individual, which is different from the regular care. The term is commonly used in the medical field and includes the expertise of the medical field. Evidence-Based Nursing EBN refers to the medical based decisions and judicious medical care on the basis of research and history. It is the integration of clinical expertise, patient’s condition and the research result.
EBN still on the stage of evolution, but the history for evidence based nursing started from earlier. Florence Nightingale, published her first papers in 1859 & 1860, spreading her words about the importance of nursing in the medical field. The practice has been continuously advancing and changed along with the nursing disciple. Later in 1990’s, EBN was included as an essential subject for undergraduates and post-graduate nursing courses. It has become very crucial for the practitioner nurses to proactively take part and have the research knowledge regarding the technological advances (Malloch & O’Grady, 2010).
EBN has a major contribution in the development of various nursing theories and practices. With time, various theories has been developed by the major contribution of various experts in the field which includes doctors, surgons, nurses, ward boys, pharma, research in medication, medical professors, radiologists etc. through their experience and medical research. One of which will be discussed here.
Faye Glenn Abdellah, inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2000. Her theory is considered as the customer need based theory. According to her, nursing is a mixture of personal art and science that molds the personal skills to help the people and cope up with their health needs. Her theory focuses on the personal needs and steps to identify the patient’s problems and same steps were used to develop the nursing treatment. The focus on needs involves, knowledge of the patient, collect the data of medical history, relate the history with the similar ones, technical knowledge about the same, application of the techniques, monitor the progress and make the necessary changes. However, the application of individual skills is a task that involves equal attention. Proper communication, personal care and attention, proper use of resources, being empathetic, giving directions and application of knowledge and skills are essential qualities of effective nurses (Malloch & O’Grady, 2010).
Every new development in medical field comes with its own pros and cons. Positive is always followed by negative in every field.
One of the major benefits of practicing the Evidence Based Nursing is the highly efficient nursing staff. The quality of nursing have showed a tremendous trend in the increase of medical facilities. Patient recovery can be done in a much faster manner due to the improved safety measures. Past few decades shows positive results by the implemention of EBM in providing high standard services. Its success shows a continuous redesigning of the models to update the practices.
Inspite of having so many benefits, the evidence based practice is still not completely reliable and followed 100% in medical practices, as every situation is different from the other, reactions and nature of individual patient varies. Therefore, EBN might not be successful every time. Medical profession is advancing day by day; therefore, nursing should be based on the standard practices. EBN involves good costs as more the skilled staff the more will be cost of maintenance. The replacement of standard practice can result in the higher accountability (Saver & Kalafut 2001).
EBN requires a pool of data library and the ability of an individual to apply the knowledge at the right time and place. The accuracy of the research document, its validity and appropriateness, application all these combined factors are the recipe for success. Missing of any one of the ingredient will be a barrier in the path of EBN practices leading to an outdated method.
Education plays a major role in moving the evidences into practice. Through the various training programs, when the theoretical professional studies get combined with the practical knowledge and sessions, the importance and applications of EBN practices are realized by the professionals during their training programs. There are several stages in the implementation of evidence-based practice, namely, knowledge creation, which is the initiation of the research practices. Second phase is sharing the study in a proper format and get the approval for its publication. In the third phase, before publication, the subject matter expert’s in the industry cross check the valuable discussion work to be done. In the next stage, it is assured that there is availability of the pool of library for the study for others. Lastly, the organization adoption and implementation of such research is done to make the others benefit fron the whole work which is the basic idea for all the evidence collection (American Nurses Association, 2001).
Not only the students of medical practioners, but the current people related to the same profile should also be eager to know the latest changes and update their skills with time with the pool of knowledge. Organizations should make sure there is efficient implementation. In this regard, a library can be facilitated to the employees, workshops and seminars are also good medium for knowledge sharing and collecting the personal evidences during the course of research work (Suttle et al., 2015).
Medical practices are not only related to the doctors, surgeons, physicians; however, it also includes other related people like nurses, ward boys and pharma etc.
Doctors and surgeons play a major role; however, the roles of nurses who stays with the patient most of the time pre or post treatment and major operations is the most crucial one. The recovery of the patient depends upon the personal care taken by the nursing staff. The micro policy is adopted by most of the hospitals in which the utmost attention is paid on the nurses and their valuable contribution in the healthcare sector (Wills & McEwen, 2002).
Such initiatives are not only included in the hospitals but various training courses and programs can also be developed to train the efficient nurses. The basic idea is to educate them various evidence based models, practices, framework, education and research. The modules are pre-designed in such a manner to imply the EBN model in medical field (Jalbert, 2014).
Research and evidence based practice are like the two sides of the same coin. Evidence based practices demands for the wide range of journals, papers and articles etc. The content of these publications will be totally dependent on the key findings and the implications of various incidences in the medical practices. These incidences will be summarized by development and validation of the documents, generation of hypothesis, application of various analysis, developing new research questions and development of nursing guidelines into the cumulative index to nursing, comments and detailed case study of any particular incidence. The subject matter will share their views and implications of their clinical practice. All these will be deeply studied and the conclusion will give the incidences showing good and bad aspects of various practiced followed at various incidence. The health literature is based on the research work and evidence collection will set a guide and a benchmark for future reference including both educational purposes as well as for implication in practicality (Malloch & O’Grady, 2010).
