Particular emphasis is placed on the changes that have taken place in these types of systems over the past few years and what the trends are for the future. Among these trends, it is possible to identify different technical advances and new features that are coming together or will be soon. For example, a new feature or advancement that is being incorporated is mobile commerce and the mobile business that can influence not only the information system to a large extent, but also the strategies and management activities of current companies.
An information system is a set of computerized components that are used to collect, create and store data. It is also used to process data in information and distribute it to desired destinations. Information systems have grown over time. They started with manual systems that included the use of paper to keep everything in order in organizations.
Over the years they have evolved considerably towards computerized systems that are easier to use and effective than manual systems. Information systems for business management (ISFM) have been and are a key factor in business development. In its continuous evolution, it has gone from being just a work tool to a competitive and strategic element, also generating new business models based on its development.
The role of most information systems is that they have been primarily used for electronic data processing (EDP), for purposes such as transaction processing, record keeping and accounting.
EDP is often referred to as the use of computers to record, classify, manipulate and summarize data. In the 1960s, another function was added to the use of computers: data processing in useful information reports. The concept of information management systems (MIS) was born. This new role focused on developing commercial applications that provided management’s end users with predefined management reports that would provide managers with the information they needed to make decisions. Information management systems: providing information in the form of reports and predefined screens to support corporate decision-making. Examples: sales analysis, production performance and cost performance reporting systems. In the 1970s, these predefined management reports were not sufficient to meet many of the management’s decision-making requirements. To meet these needs, the concept of decision support systems (DSS) was born. The new role of information systems was to provide management end-users with ad hoc and interactive support for their decision-making processes. Decision support systems: providing ad hoc interactive support for decision-making processes of managers and other professionals. Examples: product prices, profitability forecasts and risk analysis systems. In the 1980s, the introduction of microcomputers in the workplace marked the beginning of a new era, which had a profound effect on organizations. The rapid development of the processing power of the microcomputer (for example the Intel Pentium microprocessor), the application software packages (for example Microsoft Office) and the telecommunications networks have given rise to the phenomenon of computer science for the end user. End users can now use their IT resources to meet their business needs instead of waiting for indirect support from a centralized department of business information services. Furthermore, there has been progress in the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to corporate information systems. With less need for human intervention, knowledge workers could be released to handle more complex tasks.
This study should report and be of great importance to organizations that are still running on manual systems. They will see the need to keep pace with information system infrastructure trends and how it will make the execution of tasks easy and efficient.
