Country and Place, Identity, Culture and People are very important values for Indigenous Australians. In my opinion, the video clip ‘First Australians’ expresses Indigenous values more effectively than the tv clip ‘Freda’s Painting’.
To begin with, ‘First Australians’ uses language features to express Indigenous Australian values of country and place, people and identity. This video clip uses noun groups, verb groups, and adverbial groups to show the dreaming, clan groups and pride in belonging. For example, it uses the noun groups ‘great beings’, ‘ancient civilizations’ and ‘rivers and mountain ranges’.
It also uses adverbial groups such as ‘before the dreaming’, ‘with their own language’ and ‘from within the Earth’. As you can see, ‘First Australian’ uses language features very effectively.
Secondly, ‘Freda’s Painting’ uses language features to express country and place, identity and culture. It uses noun groups and verb groups to show respect and responsibility for the land, education and art. Specifically, it uses noun groups such as ‘a really good artist’, ‘the land’ and ‘your country’.
It also uses verb groups such as ‘paint’, ‘belong’ and ‘come to ask’. Overall, ‘Freda’s Painting’ uses language features less effectively to represent Indigenous values.
Next, ‘First Australians’ uses audio-visual features to express country and place, people, identity and culture. It uses image choice, camera, colour, editing and music to show the dreaming, clan groups, language and celebration of culture. For instance, it uses various camera techniques such as close-ups of Aboriginal people, bird’s eye views of landscapes and tracking shots of landscapes.
It also uses colour such as brown, ochre and orange. To sum up, ‘First Australians’ uses audio-visual features effectively to show Indigenous Values.
Finally, ‘Freda’s Painting’ uses audio-visual features to express Indigenous Australian values of country and place, culture and people. It uses image choices, camera and editing to show art, special places and elders. In particular, it uses image choices of dot paintings, elders and young people painting in the desert. It also used editing techniques such as a dissolve transition between a dot painting and a bird’s eye view of the landscape. All in all, ‘Freda’s Painting’ uses audio-visual features less effectively to represent Indigenous values.
In conclusion, I believe ‘First Australians’ expresses Indigenous values more effectively than ‘Freda’s Painting’. ‘First Australians’ does this through a variety of language features and audio-visual features. Thank you for listening.
