Florence Nightingale A Notable Woman Who Changed Healthcare for Centuries Free Essay Example

There are many notable women in the past and present. When stepping back and analyzing the thousands of women, I choose someone whom I did not even know but has helped me tremendously. When you work in healthcare, I believe everyone knows the most notable woman in our field. Florence Nightingale paved the way for better healthcare and the beginning of protecting all from germs.

Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy on May 12, 1820, to a wealthy British family. Her mother, Frances Nightingale, hailed from a household of merchants and took satisfaction in socializing with people of important societal position.

Even Though her mother’s fascination with societal rising, Florence herself was uneasy in collective settings. She desired to avert from being the base of interest on every occasion possible (“Florence Nightingale”).

Determined and stubborn, Florence frequently disputed with her mother, whom she perceived as excessively regulating. Yet, like a lot of daughters, she was eager to satisfy her mother. ‘I think I am got something more good-natured and complying’ (History.com Editors, 2009).

At five years old Florence lived on her father’s one estate in Hampshire, Embley. Florence’s father, William Shore Nightingale, also had inherited another estate in Lea Hurst, Derbyshire. In Hampshire Florence received conventional instruction where she learned German. French, and Italian (History.com Editors, 2009).

When growing up Florence took care of many sick and ill people in the town near her home. At 16 years old, she realized she would like to be a nurse and that this was her purpose in life.

Her parents did not agree with her and forbid from being a nurse. Woman in her statue was supposed to marry, have children, and run their home, and not pursue what was viewed as a menial job by the upperclassmen. In 1844 at the age of 17 years, Florence went behind her parents back and enrolled as a nursing student at the Lutheran Hospital of Pastor Fleidner in Kaiserwerth, Germany (History.com Editors, 2009). Florence nursed the injured soldiers throughout the Crimean War. Florence was known as the ‘Lady with the Lamp’ since she did night rounds. Nursing soldiers throughout the combat, Nightingale performed to increase nourishment and conditions in the wards. Several wounded soldiers were perishing from ailments unconnected to their wounds, such as typhoid, cholera, and dysentery. Nightingale adjusted on the wards and began the practice of phoning the Sanitary Commission. Her work led to a decline in the mortality rates of hurt soldiers from 42% to 2% (Karimi & Masoudi Alavi, 2015). Nightingale thought the fatalities were the consequence of inadequate nutrition, insufficient supplies, and the troopers being overused. After accumulating proof that steered to unsanitary environments as a key reason of death, Nightingale acted to enhance the sanitation in the army and civilian hospitals for the duration of peacetime (“Florence Nightingale”)

Nightingale devoted the remainder of her profession in work, on the formation and advancement of nursing as a profession, she created the way for nursing in its present way. In 1883, Nightingale was awarded the Royal Red Cross by Queen Victoria. In 1907, she was the first woman to be given the Order of Merit. In 1908, she was awarded the Honorary Freedom of the City of London. Now International Nurses Day is celebrated on her birthday (“Florence Nightingale”).

Florence inspired all nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, and fellow medical workers like me. She paved the way for sanitation and the yearning to help the ill. She made nursing one of the greatest professions and gave a woman the yearning to break free and help others. I chose Florence because, in my point of view, she is one of the most notable women to this day. She saved many lives and continues throughout the world with her skills and knowledge. Her sanitation efforts help keep the ill getting better and nurses to not get sick. Florence grew up wealthy but still wanted to go out of the normal and be someone. Florence saved many lives and continues to be recognized by all in the medical field. Florence was and still is one of the best nurses this world had ever encountered. Nutrition and sanitation for the sick would not be what it is today with our Florence Nightingale.
