The history of Hampi is related with the historical Kishkindha, which is known for the ‘Vanara’ or Monkey Kingdom, whose reference is also there in the epic Ramayana. Hampi was the settlement of main areas of the Vijayanagara Empire since 1336 to 1565. The empire reigned supreme under Krishnadevaraya, the Emperor. The Vijayanagara empire stretched over at least three states – Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh. After this, these areas were persecuted by the Deccan Muslim Confederacy due to the decisive location of Hampi with the Tungabhadra River on one side and hills on the other three sides.
Hampi still contains the fabulous ruins of this dubbed “Forgotten Empire” – all spread out across an area of 26 km. The sight of this incredible fortress is absolutely breathtaking, and charms the visitors who have entered Hampi’s great atmosphere.The temples of Hampi, its monolithic sculptures and monuments, attract the traveler because of their excellent workmanship. The Hindu style of architecture found at Hampi reflects the splendor of the Vijaynagar Empire.
The rugged landscape adds to the historic ambience of this site. The Vithala Temple Complex with its 56 musical pillars is one of the most splendid monuments and one of the finest tourist attractions in Hampi. To the east of the hall is located the famous Stone Chariot with stone wheels that actually move. Facing the shrine stands the great mandapa on a richly sculpted basement. Its roof is pillared with granite, around 15 feet in height, each again consisting of a central pillar enclosed by detached shafts, all cut from one single block of rock.
Places to see:
Vithala Temple:
The temples beautiful sculptures exhibits the richness of Vijayanagar Art. The outer pillars are known as the ‘Musical Pillars’ as they echoes when tapped, although this practice is now discouraged to avoid further damage. The temple also displays an beautifully carved stone chariot in the temple courtyard containing an image of Garuda. Vittala temple is about 2 kms away to the east of Hampi bazaar. Relatively well preserved, the ruins of the temple are now a World Heritage.
Virupaksha Temple:
This is the main centre of pilgrimage in Hampi. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The place is also home to the shrines of Pampa and Bhuvaneswari.
Lotus Mahal:
Lotus Mahal shaped like a lotus flower from top, this two-story structure has beautiful arc ways set in geometric regularity. It was an air-cooled summer palace of the queen.
Noblemen’s Palace:
This place was recently discovered and they suspect this was for aristocrats and high-ranking officials.

Road:
The main bus station in Hampi is located in the Hampi Bazaar area. We would provide you all India tourist permit vehicles for the local transportations and also for the intercity drives too.
Rail:
Hospet is the nearest rail head (13 kms). Hospet is linked by rail to Bangalore, Bijapur,Hubli and Guntakal.
