In this case, it can be seen that Helen is a work-oriented lady. It was not impossible to complete her work if she could cooperate with Mr. Conway as she required more details from him to complete her bidding proposal. First, she must be aware enough when is her proposal due as it is not a matter of just one person but it’s a matter of whole bid. “Integrity, honesty, and fairness are widely used values for evaluating activities that could become ethical issues” (63).
An honest employee knows about the deadlines and all the possible ways to get things done before the due time. Now, as Helen misunderstood the date of submitting the proposal and Mr. Conway is offering her for dinner on Saturday night while he also offered her that he will provide him the previous samples which contain the detailed technical information that could help her to complete her bidding proposal, she would accept the offer. Here, the “conflict of interest” can be observed as Helen was not agreed to meet Mr.
Conway because of his previous casual discussions. The conflict of interest exists when an individual chooses his/her own interest over the interest of organization or the other group of people (70). In order to avoid this, Helen must separate her private interests from the business dealings. She must meet Mr. Conway and should take the necessary details to complete her work before the due date. Moreover, she must be careful next time in order to avoid such blunder.
Secondly, she could request Mr. Conway to drop the important files at her home or she may pick the important data from his house. If the data was in soft form, she could request him to send via email.
George is one of the competent Account Managers in a toy-manufacturing company. His company recently launched a toy that became very popular in the market and his company got a lot of orders to deliver that toy as soon as possible. It was hard for a company to meet the demand in such hurry so they made down the list of the buyers and allocate them dates when they will get their orders. Meanwhile, a new buyer came and placed his order for that super-hit toy and requested George to fulfill his order as soon as possible, moreover, he also requested a few other toys. George knows that this buyer had never ordered in his company before and used to buy the stuff from his competitors. He was happy that this he got a chance to make a new customer. He agreed with him to deliver him a toy in suitable quantity. Meanwhile, his Sales Manager denied for producing more items as it was already difficult for the company to fulfill such high demand. The dilemma was that George has already many other orders from the existing customers and it is very difficult for him to complete the order in a short time. George was left with three options. First, he may excuse from the existing buyers to give them complete demand. Second, he may excuse the new buyer to not provide him with toys this time. Third, he can request the existing customers to extend the date of delivering the order because it is necessary for him to satisfy new customers. “Business relations are a subset of human relations governed by their own rules that in market society involves competition, profit maximization, and personal advancement within the organization” (64). George must be honest and he must tell the truth to the existing customers. He could request his few old customers to get their orders to deliver in two or three turns instead of getting the whole order in one turn. In this way, George would be able to satisfy all demands at the same time. Otherwise, he would excuse from the new customer to extend the delivery date of his order.
