History of Civil Rights Movement Free Essay Example

One historical event I wish I could have been a part of would the civil rights movement. The civil rights movement was a time period of change in the United States. This movement went on from the 1950s-1960s. It was time period for change and equality for African Americans. African Americans have always been treated poorly and the civil rights movement was a way to eliminate the poor treatment. Although the Civil War abolished slavery, African Americans were still being treated poorly and they were discriminated.

To end the discrimination they gathered people that wanted change and they fought for equality for nearly two decades.

To begin with, throughout the civil rights movement we saw actions that may have seem small but they were very meaningful. Such as the event that occurred December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus for a white male. During this time period African Americans had a designated area on bus, but Rosa Parks refused to give her seat up just because a white male could not find a place to sit.

Rosa Parks was eventually arrested because of the action she decided to take, but this action is referenced as a change in today’s society. As people found out about her arrest they rioted and named Rosa Parks as “mother of modern civil rights movement.”

I wish I would have been on the bus that Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus. It would have been amazing to see her courage and determination keep the seat she had elected.

Maybe I could have joined in the people that rioted due to the unfair arrest of Rosa Parks. I could have experienced the beginning part of the ongoing civil rights movement.

Another event that occurred during the civil rights movement was the March on Washington. This event occurred on August 28, 1963 in Washington D.C. More than 200,000 people reunited in order to spread the message of equality for all people regardless of their skin tone. The March on Washington is now known as the most memorable event in regards to the civil rights movement. The acme of the March on Washington was the outstanding speech presented by Martin Luther King Jr. known was the “ I Have a Dream Speech.” This speech represented what the people were fighting for throughout all the civil rights movement.

I wish I could have been in Washington D.C marching along with the people fighting for equality. Discrimination is a factor that has divided the United States for multiple decades. Being part of the most memorable event of the civil rights movement would be a dream come true. To be their peacefully fighting for the equal treatment for all people not taking in consideration their skin tone. Also attending the March on Washington would mean that I could hear Martin Luther King Jr. deliver the life changing speech “I Have a Dream.” Being able to hear that powerful speech delivered by one of the figures of the civil rights movement would be a wish come true.

In conclusion, I wish I could have witnessed the civil rights movement. The civil rights movement was an event that strived for change in the United States. If I had witnessed the civil rights I could have seen historical figures such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. fight for what they knew was right. African Americans have always been lowered in the United States society, but the civil rights movement was created in order to remove the borders that limited the representation of African Americans. Actions that seemed small such as refusing to give up as seat or delivering a speech may have seemed small at the time but in todays society they are known as the first steps that lead to the change in the United States.
