Current trends in nursing practice can be evaluated by gaining feedback from the peers. Self-evaluation that is comparing the previous data with the current standing helps in understanding trend in nursing. For example gaining feedback from the patients and the peers about the management of fall in the elderly patients in a hospital can be a good way of evaluation (Walliman 2017). Risk registers can also be helpful in evaluation. Furthermore, internet researches, blogs and the professional workshops can also be used for evaluating the trend.
Research question: Does the maintenance of hand hygiene reduces the risk of hospital acquired infections in the hospital wards?
Credible sources of data can includes scientific journals, articles, peer-reviewed journals academic research journals and other already reviewed sources and approved by others working in this field. The data obtained from any government sites are also credible and can be used for the researches. Other aspects of identifying credible sources is to check whether the intended audiences are appropriate, whether the citations are correct ,whether the content is based on facts and opinion, or presence of any biases, or the authors are well known in the field or there are any supporting document (Australian government 2018).
It is necessary to know the date of publication. Secondly it is required to understand the content the content of the material. The data can be accessed from a databases such as Google scholar, PubMed, CINAHL.
The best method information gathering in the field of nursing are surveys and questionnaires. It helps in obtaining the quantitative facts and the data. Not all the methods of information gathering are useful in all kinds of researches, hence it is necessary to understand the kind of researches that we are going to conduct (Holloway and Galvin 2016). For example, in order to find out the nurses perception about mental health illness, it is necessary to take personal interviews or prepare questionnaire other than conducting focus group discussions. Again to find out the effect of the substance abuse among the university students it is natural that the victims might feel uncomfortable to discuss their experiences in focus groups.
Establishing the roles and the responsibilities- In order to work as a team it is important to understand the role of each member of the research team. The duties of the principle investigator involves ensuring that all the procedures are followed uniformly , following the local and the state legislation, communicating with the other departments related to the study, looking after the ethical approval of the research team and delegating the other responsibilities.
Establishing the question to answer- It is necessary to understand the goals of the project. In a research project normally a research question is being answered.
Acquiring the preliminary information- The background information of the given topic should be researched for before the initiation of the project (Australian government 2018).
Implementing the method of choice-after the preliminary information has been gathered, a group will be researching for finding out the best methods of information gathering or what kind of research will it be.
Summarisation of the evidences – It is necessary to evaluate the collected information and then analyse them in order to come to a conclusion.
In order to establish the relevance of the information, at first it is necessary to evaluate the collected information. It is necessary to understand that the source is reliable or not. We need to decide that the information provided in the source is worth trusting and credible. Evaluation of the information involves checking of the motives of the author. Another way of evaluation is to check whether there are any biases or the author having any authority on the topic. Secondly it is necessary to understand that the where the information is relevant to the nursing research (Australian government 2018). Any objective that is not relevant to the goal should be removed. Another way to find out relevance of the information collected is to find out that the whether the newly added content is adding any value to the research.
Once the research has been completed, it is necessary to analyse the information for making any interpretation. Five types of analysis are present – Descriptive • Exploratory • Inferential • Predictive • Casual • Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT). Different kind of analysis is being done at different stages of the research project. In the process of analysing the information, initially it is important to summarise the information in order to ease the interpretation. Use of visual aids can be considered as one of the most efficient method of summarising the information. Graphs, tables, charts helps in simplifying the data. The next step involves the statistical analysis of the data, which can be done with the help of a statistician (Australian government 2018).
Mean, median and mode are some of the common types of statistical calculations that is being done. Standard deviation is often used to determine the vastness of the data. The standard deviation for the data set indicates whether a point is near or far to the mean or the average.
Finally the last process in the research analysis is the documentation process. Development of the naming system in files with date and the name of the project is recommended. Lastly, all the data has to be stored safely. One of the ways to store information is compact discs, DVDs, USB (Australian government 2018). All the hardcopies should be stored in close and secured cabinets.
Gathering information in nursing profession mainly deals with evaluation and selection of methods that can be effectively used for the gathering of authentic and relevant information and this can be done via gathering information from the evidence-based research or via undertaking systematic approach. After gathering the information it is the duty of the nurse to find the relevance of the information in relation to the objective or the work requirement. Gathering and the use of information also deals with organisation of the information in a particular direction so that those organised way of representation help the nurse in future. An organised pattern of information helps in prompt action in future instances during emergency (DiCenso, Guyatt and Ciliska 2014).
In order to compare and contrast the information, I will first gather the information from relevant yet authentic nursing practice book which states the nursing guidelines in patient care under particular domain. This information is mostly authentic. After gathering of the information, I will tally the information with the prevalent evidence based practice. According to DiCenso, Guyatt and Ciliska (2014) evidence-based practice is the main domain in the nursing research as it helps to understand the process of the approach that is best suited under particular patient requirement.
Rules of evidence based practice in nursing initiates with the implementation of the research findings in order to discover whether the information highlighted in the research is accurate. After that it is the duty of the nurse to look for instances in order to make sure that the research proposed plan of action will work. However, the first evidence that is used to support information should not be limited that signifies that evidence should not only permissible under low sample size. This is because, in that case, such approach will not be applicable over a diverse population. Moreover, it is the rule of evidence based practice that the chosen approach is guided by statistical analysis, proper observation and the same observation is highlighted in numerous other studies. It is the duty of the nurse to be honest about the extracted evidence based information in order to practice in accordance with the professional standards (Australian Government 2018).
There are different types of analysis in order to analyse the information in order to make proper interpretation and one of this analysis is SWOT. Here S stands for strength, W stands for weakness, O stands for Opportunity and T stands for threat. PEST analysis is another type of analysis where P stands for political, E stands for Economic, S stands for social and T stands for Technology (Australian Government 2018).
In order to document the information I generally prefer electronic documentation of the data. This is because; electronic medical records are the latest technological advancement in the domain of medical science which helps in remote access of data. So documentation of the patient information in the electronic database help the doctor to quickly access patient data and communicate the necessary therapy plan to the nursing professionals. This helps to save quality time (Gottesman et al. 2013).
To assess ways in which different aspects of information may be used, the prioritization of the information must be done based on the information need. This prioritization of the information must be guided by the rules of evidence followed by accessing the strength, relevance, reliability and currency of information under the context of strength, reliability, currency, comparing, contrasting, challenging, and finally reflecting (Australian Government 2018).
The potential area where I feel change is mandatory is in the technology area of the nursing research and this mainly includes electronic medical records. The reason behind this is documentation of the information in the electronic medical record requires rigours clerical job amidst normal nursing role. It is under this constant work pressure that the nurses frequently encounter error in data documentation. This error in the data documentation leads to fatal health outcome along with overall increase in the healthcare cost. However, electronic medical record is indispensable in the domain of present day healthcare for data documentation. So change will mostly involve proper training of the nursing professionals towards effectively handling the process of the data documentation through electronic medical records. This proper training will help the nurses to side-pass the challenges they encounter with data-documentation. Such training must be procured by IT professionals. Moreover, this training will help the nurses to handle the technical glitch in the domain of securing confidentiality related to electronic medical record and thereby helping in a comprehensive implementation of the electronic data documentation (Kuo, Liu and Ma 2013).
In order to storing of the information, DVDs and USBs are used. However, there is an issue of confidentiality and privacy that arise with the use of storing of the information in electronic mode. Storing information in the electronic medium, opens the door for easy and the remote access of the data. Moreover, under this present scenario of data hacking, such confidential patient information can be hacked leading to the bridging of the privacy issue. In order to overcome such circumstances, it is the duty of the healthcare administrators to erect a 24X7 information technology team to handle the data safety of the patients. In that case such privacy and confidentiality issue can be handled properly (Bayer, Santelli and Klitzman 2015).
Main objective: Learning the skills of conducting survey among the patients via using both open and close ended questionnaire. I will also learn how to document the result of this survey electronically
Outcome: The main outcome of learning the skill of conducting the survey is, it will help me to gain feedback from my clients and thereby helping to refine my scope of practice accordingly.
The actions recommended: The main action recommended for this task is take detailed training under an experienced yet registered nursing professional. A professional nursing professional will help me to understand the how to conduct the survey in an organised way
Other recommended action: I will also attain training in effective communication skills as this will help me to interact with my client properly and thereby increasing the overall positive outcome of the survey.
