Human Trafficking in United States Abstract This essay will concentrate on the two types of trafficking and how America has over looked the problem all of these years. Those two types of tracking are labor and sex trafficking. The laws that have changed concerning human trafficking have changed in the last few years. A young frighten lonely girl has run away from home. What wait for her out in the big bad world is abuse, torture, and intimidation? A man will observe her and when he talks to her he will seem very compassionate.
This poor unsuspecting child has no idea that this kind understanding man is in charge of the largest human trafficking type in the United States. The type of human trafficking is called “sex trafficking”. This girl is one of many that will be forced into the sex trade. Thousands of girls are trafficked every year. Human trafficking is the modern day slavery and the officially authorized procedures that are being taken to neutralize the loss of anymore defenseless women and children.
Human Trafficking in United States
Sex Trafficking The first type of human trafficking is called sex trafficking. Most people don’t even consider the thought Americans exploiting adolescent girls in their home town. Many women and young females are captured, coerced or deceived into a world of abuse and sexual assault. When we hear the words “sex trafficking,” as Americans we immediately think of women and children overseas who are being forced into the sex trade or who are brought into the United States for the purpose of sexual exploitation (Furndt, 2011).
It is critical to understand that even independent of being in the sex trade, women and girls are vulnerable to sexual exploitation through forced sexual acts. In other words, there are cases of women in domestic labor, personal service, restaurant, hotel, agricultural, and other segments of the work force where women have been sexually assaulted as part of the trafficking experiences (Logan, Walker, and Hunt, 2009). A paper that was written by International Human Rights Law Institute in 2005 says the trafficking of women and children for the purposed of sexual exploitation is an everyday reality.
Most of these girls are run a ways that feel that they have no place to go. So when a person approaches with proposition to help with a place to stay and food they seize the offer. These men would say anything. Fabricate a fairy tell life so this helpless child will come with them. We see and hear of prostitutes on the streets but it never enters our mind to question “How did they get there”? Or “How old is she”? Most pubescent girls are the ages of 12 and 14 when they forced into this twisted line of work. They are intimidated, and threatened into not running away.
We all just look the other way or call these girls on the street names for the life style they have chosen. This was not what they dreamed of being when they grew up. Things have to change for these women and children. Labor Trafficking The second type of human trafficking is called labor trafficking. I agree with Rebecca Clarren when she said “We like to think of slavery in America as something consigned to history books, a dark chapter set in Southern cotton plantations”. This is not true at all. Labor trafficking is going on in many places of the world today.
The majority of trafficking victims are people that are working in everyday jobs in the United States. They could be our waiter or waitress, the lady that cleans and presses your clothes or the janitor in your local business. Labor trafficking consists of men, women and children that are that are deceived and coerced into this slave business. Labor trafficking is for a more appropriate expression this is a modern day slave trade is known as organized crime. People are used as slaves, long hours with little to no pay. Human trafficking is a fast-growing criminal industry. Government response
The escalating numbers of American-born children are sold for sex and labor increased. This has prompted the government agencies to enact a toughened human trafficking law. The laws in the United States on Human Trafficking have improved. As of seven years ago, various states made human trafficking, a crime on the state level. In 2000 Congress Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) created a special visa that enables victims of sex and labor trafficking to remain temporarily in the United States if they agree to assist in the investigation or prosecution of their traffickers (Clarren, 2007).
A non-profit anti-trafficking organization called Polaris Project resides in Washington DC has investigated the Human Trafficking problem for years. They estimate that in the Human Trafficking industry illegal party was making around $642,000 a year by selling sex of women and young girls. Human trafficking is one of the worst crimes of the United States. So many men, women and children are abused and nobody pays any attention to it. It is a comfort to know that sex and labor trafficking has caught the attention of the government in the United States.
If took many years for the government to respond to the growing predicament human trafficking has done to the United States. They are working on laws to prevent these types of crimes. In conclusion the two types of Human Trafficking are Sex Trafficking and Labor Trafficking. Sex trafficking has been a major problem for the United States for many years. Women and young girls are coerced into prostitution. Labor trafficking is modern day slaver. People are paid very little if anything at all.
