Merck developed the leading pharmaceuticals company Vioxx and they have been serving the country for more than 80 countries. Vioxx is mainly producing drugs for reducing any pain or any injury caused by an infection and the fever-inducing properties (Brophy, 2016). From the research studies, it has been found out that the drugs of the company have side effects that mostly caused cardiovascular diseases after consuming the drugs for few times or consuming the high doses of those drugs (Sobel, Madigan & Wang, 2017). There has been found the increased rate of heart attacks, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases. This study includes the proper analysis of the problem that has been raised in Vioxx and the reason for its withdrawal from the market. This study also involves the recommendation solution for the decision-making problems in Vioxx.
Vioxx had been withdrawn from the market due to the side effects of the drugs produced by them. The pain relief drugs have increased the rate of the cardiovascular diseases among the users of their products. There are various clinics, who have criticized the pain relief drugs produced by Vioxx (Ross & Krumholz, 2018). When the pain relief drugs are withdrawal from the market at that time, Merck again decided to launch a drug in the market, which is for responding to the arthritis disease. This shows that the decision-making process was not right at the right time and the outcome of the decision of Merck was not at all profitable and beneficial for the company (Petersen & Singhal, 2017). This outcome was quietly predictable by the market analysis. The decision-making issues are responsible for the withdrawal of the company from the market. The proper diagnosis is required before the introduction of any drugs to the market. The side effects are needed to be noted before the launching of the drugs (Jasper, Leenders & O’Shannassy, 2017). The decisions need to be taken by effectively analyzing the data and there has been lack of the proper diagnosis of the data related to the side effects that can occur due to the intake of high doses of the pain relief drugs. The result was predictable as Scolnick had warned the development team of Vioxx to detect the side effects of the pain relief drugs while producing any drugs as it was known to him that the side effects can arise from such composition of the drugs (Soliman et al., 2017). Thus, it is clear that the precautions can be taken beforehand as the outcome was predictable that is by properly doing an analysis of the data in depth during the trial as many trials during the first impression of any new interpretation cause several problems.
The reason behind the rise of such side effects is that the 2pain relief drug stimulates protein in a certain amount that is referred to as the tissue factor and this tissue factor is responsible for the blood clotting. The cardiovascular diseases are generally triggered by the clotting of the blood and the tissue factor production causes the rise in the rate of heart attack, lung diseases, stroke and other. The reason is that there has been a lack of proper functioning in the industry of Vioxx (Davis et al., 2018). This involves the right decision making at the right time in a collaborative manner. Like, the chief executive of Vioxx has declared in an interview that he had already warned the industry of the company regarding the irrelevant rising of the product’s price without bringing any improvements in the medicinal value of the drugs, this also turned out the public, media and the clinics against the industry. The effect of these identified decision-making problems and the absence of proper coordination has made the company withdrawal from the market.
The most basic cause of this problem is the absence of the right decision in the right time as Vioxx should have to think about the initiative of workings on the side effects of the products that require the proper diagnosing of the results of their production (Raghupathi & Raghupathi, 2014). The actions of the member of these pharmaceuticals reflected the absence of the proper collaboration among the members. When Merck decided to plan for taking initiatives towards the solution of this problem by continuing the studies and trials, then only such initiatives made the VIGOR result visible to the media as well as to the financial and the scientific community. This lead to the various arguments regarding the uses and the side effects of the drugs and the reasons for the increase rate of the cardiovascular diseases of their drugs users. Though Merck again took the initiative of proposing the safety measures about the effects of the side effects of the pain relief drugs there were no such profitable outcomes of such initiatives (Schwartz, 2017). There has been the arrival of the problem in the selling of the other drugs of Vioxx in the market and by patiently waiting also Vioxx has to face the withdrawal of their products from the market. There was another initiative taken by Merck for reducing the financial losses they have produced that is by bringing another pain-relieving drug in the market for the treatment of the severe diseases like arthritis. This was also not accepted by their users and this again creates a financial loss for them (Thompson, Ritenbaugh & Nichter, 2017). This provides the chance for many pharmaceuticals to raise their sale of the product in the market. The financial loss was reflected from the announcement of Merck that is their earnings per share had been most affected by this situation. There were several legal measures that have been raised against the executives of this pharmaceutical (Schwartz, 2017). Although, Merck has declared that he will fight against each of the legal measures taken against him and the experts have declared that settlement of the legal measures would cost from $4v to $30 billion. This problem could have been mitigated if the side effects were not well known by the communities.
The decision-making problems raise a huge problem, which even leads to the withdrawal of the company from the market and Vioxx’s user’s health are also affected. This is recommended for the company to properly detect the side effects of any drugs before launching to the market. Also, the developers of the drug need to be conscious of the composition and every upcoming plan need to be clear to every member beforehand only. The lack of collaboration and the wrong decision was the main cause of this problem, though if the news was not spread among the communities then the safety plan and the measures could have been taken for the improvement of the massacre caused by Vioxx.
Therefore, from the above decision, it can be concluded that this company was one of the popular brands for their painkiller drugs. Several clinics blame Vioxx for being responsible for the withdrawn of the drugs from the market. The company required to provide more time and patience for data analysis as if it is properly done then the VIGOR results would not be shocking towards them (McIntyre & Evans, 2014). Though Scolnick warned the development team for carefully analyzing the data, then also this problem has taken place due to the reluctance of the company members. Thus, the collaboration among the members of the pharmaceuticals needs to be changed for making the right decision at the right time. Vioxx need to be conscious of the side effects of the side effects of the products as these side effects can bring severe health problems to the users of their company (Thompson, Ritenbaugh & Nichter, 2017).
