Discuss about the Impact of green IT for organization.
Sustainable development is one of the widely debated issues across the world. However, there is an increasing pressure on the organizations for adopting practices, which are environment friendly. As most of the organizations utilize some forms of information technology performing daily transactions. Hence, it becomes important to analyze the factors affecting the process of adopting intensity regarding green IT practices as well as subsequent impact on the performance of the organization in developing country. Present study deals with reviewing literature regarding impact of green IT for organization. In addition, current practices report and comparison of literature and current practices are discussed in the present study.
Lee and Min (2015) stated that green computing is referred as the practices of using the computing resource that are efficiently during maintenance or increasing overall IT services. It requires integration of green computing practices like power management, virtualization as well as enhancement of cooling technology. In addition, recycling, optimizing IT infrastructure and electronic waste disposal in order to encounter sustainability needs (Yang et al. 2061). While there is an expectation the green or sustainable IT needs lower costs as well as influence of the organization on the environment. Hence, it is required to enhance the role played by the organizations for deploying IT in the organizations. ‘
Prasad and Green (2015) stated that green IT practices can motivate the practice including minimization of the use of hazardous materials. It helps to minimize the utilization of hazardous materials and maximize energy efficiency at lifetime of products. Green computing is significant for every class of the system that has range from the handheld systems to the large-scale data centers. There are several corporate department processes green computing initiatives help minimizing environmental impact on IT operations (Luan et al. 2016). Thus, it is important to process the IT practices efficiently in the organizations so that the organizations obtain competitive benefits in the market.
Advantages:
There are several governmental agencies continued implementing the standards as well as regulations that can encourage green IT for the organizations. Several governmental agencies have an important role that can be helpful to deploy green IT in the organization. Current IT systems are relied on the complicated mix of people, hardware as well as networks like green computing initiatives that can cover the areas. The solution requires addressing end user satisfaction, restricting management as well as regulatory compliance (Kirchoff et al. 2016). In addition, it is important to maintain that manufacturing process of personal computer accounts 70% of natural resources utilized in lifecycle of personal computer. Hence, the biggest contribution for green computing generally prolongs equipments for lifetime. Green computing is considered as the term utilized in order to denote efficient utilization of resources in computing. The organizations adopting a policy can ensure the process that sets up operations as
Green Information Technology also known as Green IT is the technique of computing along with ensuring that the process is environment friendly. It aims in reducing the evidence of carbon that has been emitted by the business. The emission of carbon is occurred while reducing the cost invested in the resources. The continuous development of technology has been affecting the environment (Rostamzadeh, Govindan and Esmaeili, 2015). Green IT is introduced to avoid these situations. Green IT reduces the use of harmful resources; it also helps in maximizing efficiency of energy during the lifetime of the products manufactured. Usage of Green IT has various positive effects on the environment (Wu, Rangan and Zhang, 2016). This report discusses regarding the organizations that has implemented Green IT in their business. It further discusses the outcomes of implementation of Green IT in the organizations. The key issues involved with green IT practices are energy efficiency in computing as well as promoting environment friendly technology. The practice of designing, manufacturing, utilizing as well as disposing the computers, servers along with relate subsystems.
The strategies for green IT practice can reduce consumption of energy, buying green energy and minimizing paper as well as consumables that are used. In addition, the practice of green IT can minimize travel requirements for the customers or employees. Massive exploration of information technology as well as range of new equipments is developed. Green computing is referred as the practice of using energy efficiently. In addition, green IT causes negligible degradation to the environmental resources as well as parameters that maintains feasibility. However, it is balanced in the process as well as maintaining the parameters that can cause negligible degradation to the environmental resources as well as parameters that can maintain feasibility. The process is calculated using the strategy and get advantages in the process. It is balanced as well as sustainable approach towards achieving healthy as well as clean environment resources along with the parameters. On the other hand, green computing is referred as the art of using computing resources in effective as well as eco-friendly way. The practice is drawn serious attention in several sectors. The manufacturing industries can contribute directly to the pollution. However, the IT industries have an important impact on the process of consuming power as well as inefficient use of hardware devices.
According to Becherer and Helms, (2014), most the companies, going green means reduction in use of papers for various purposes. This can bring up some disadvantages for the company. For example, employees might lose their computers or laptops that are used in the workplace. This leads to lost in information and all the records that have been saved in the laptop. This can also take place when the laptop faces any IT related problems. The laptop might breakdown and the data might get lost (Samant, 2015). This lost data is not recoverable most of the times. Any means of damage to the laptop of any employee can prove to be disastrous for the company. There must be some backup so that in case of any problem the data can be recovered.
Disadvantages:
As described by Juric, (2016) going green can take some time; it is not a fast process. The decision making of going green might take place overnight but the implementation can never happen so soon. It takes a huge amount of time green changes the complete lifestyle of the company. The employees need to be trained regarding its benefits and how to take advantage of this implementation. The employees need time to come up with this change in lifestyle.
This report discusses the organizations that have implemented green IT and contributed towards environment sustainability. The organizations such as Nike, Unilever, Johnson and Johnson, Seventh Generation, IBM, Panasonic, EBay and many more have implemented green IT in order to reduce the use of resources that are harmful for the environment and the reduction of wastes produced by the factories that manufacture the products. Various technologies use efficient ways which help in reducing then energy used at workplace. This as a result reduces the monthly bill. Some organizations use LED lights instead of fluorescent bulbs for their exit symbol. Some organizations also use HVAC filters in order to save energy as well as prolong the lifespan of their system. Accorging to Zhang, Wu and Shen, (2015) building ethical leadership in the business plans can help in establishing important relationships among communities. It also helps in strengthening local bonds. Some companies have introduced a policy called pay-what-you-can. This policy lets people pay for the needy people. Customers are allowed to pay the amount they want. Reaching to those who need help in the local community improves the image of the company. They ensure the world is a better place for everyone.
According to Mehta and Chugan (2015) by implementing Green IT, companies are able to produce innovative as well as environment friendly products. This increases sales and this in turn increases profit and hikes the revenue of the company. Patagonia’s footprint chronicle is a very good example of using environmental ethics in their business in order to examine the business habits. This provides the customers with transparency. Customers are interested in knowing where their money is being utilized. They are satisfies when they get to know that their money is being invested in environmental uses. As defined by Albort-Morant, Leal-Millán and Cepeda-Carrión, (2016) a company’s sustainability goals help in achieving operations that are efficient in nature. T also helps in being innovative in their work; it improves the quality of lives and also enriches the local community of the company. Rewards can be established for the employees that who promote lifestyle choices that are sustainable. These include biking to workplace instead of hiring a cab.
Panasonic has been continuously receiving high grades from the experts because of the quality of products they provide to their customers. Panasonic also aims for sustainable environment. The company also takes care that they produce environment friendly products. They have implemented the green movement in their business by applying different ways compared to other companies. They have collaborated with various companies in order to design a demonstration of a Sustainable Smart Town; this town would be located in Japan.
Seventh Generation makes use of sustainable practices along with this they create special space for the green products manufactured by them. They manufacture cleaning products. Cleaning products are commonly washed down drains. Instead of implementing various principles to save ground water, the wastes generated after washing the cleaning products, the ground water is polluted. The toxic and strong chemicals pollute the water in the water table. Every technology has its impacts on organizations. Some of them are advantages and some of them are disadvantages. The advantages and disadvantages are described below. According to Wu, Rangan and Zhang, (2016) implementation of Green IT reduces the cost invested in the resources used for manufacturing products. This in turn reduces the amount of resources used. The implementation of Green IT makes the overall process cost effective. This also increases the efficiency of the operations of the business. More principles used by organizations in order to reduce cost are by switching off lights after all the office work is done and by printing on both the sides of paper while printing anything. This reduces the cost invested in electricity bills and ink used in the printing machines. According to Mehta and Chugan (2015) organizations tailor their brands in order to fit within the sustainable ideals. This is a very smart way to attract eco-friendly customers, very conscious regarding the environment. These customers are ready to contribute in environment friendly movements. The green approach to its business improves the company’s reputation as well as brand image. Customers love companies that care about the environment and have a clear brand image. This brings about more success for the company. IBM is one of the first companies that have adapted eco friendly business as well as sustainability. Incorporating social responsibility in their business has always been its aim since 1960s. The data centers of the company have received various awards from the European Commission. These awards were provided for their success in energy efficiency. Presently IBM is putting efforts in producing smart buildings; these building would reduce the demand of resources used. It also works on management of water resources.
As per Azadi, Shabani and Khodakarami, (2015) it is quite costly is a company wants to go green initially. For example if a company wants to switch to solar power, it would need the installation of solar panels. This installation might cost excessively much. The cost reduction in various aspects such as energy is not enough in most of the cases. The investment made in going green is much more higher compared to the cost reduction. Sometimes the switching to use green resources in order to produce environment friendly products makes the products very costly. These products are not easily affordable by common people. For example, Starbucks use organic coffee beans in order to produce better quality of coffee. This coffee is healthy as well as environment friendly. They use air-conditioned rooms that are environment friendly. These implications rise the cost of their products automatically. This makes the products unaffordable for common people.
Green IT has been implemented by various organizations. The organizations are listed below-
Ford Motor Company is one of the biggest companies that manufacture automobiles. Automobile manufacturing companies are known for polluting the environment. They emit residues that are harmful for environment as well as people living around these factories. Ford Motor Company has changed this perception among people by implementing a certain policy for years (Bose, R. and Luo, X., 2011). The company uses environment friendly fabrics in their vehicles. More than 50% of the Escape and Focus vehicles are manufactured in such a way that they can be recycled. Company ensures that the vehicles manufactured by them utilize less amount of fuel. The company contains a special section, which consists of used furniture that is not in use any more. In addition, people those who need furniture can purchase them and use them. It also includes some other appliances such as kitchen appliances, decorative items. These appliances are allowed to be sold in the local community because they are hard to ship outside. The company has partnership with United Stated Postal Service (USPS). This partnership ensures the company green supply when any product needs to be shipped.
Unilever has invested more in green investments. The company has made sustainability a part of its identity in the corporate world. The company follows a plan called sustainable living plan, this plan sets a specific target for supply chain, sourcing and production. It also reduces the usage of water, electricity and many more natural resources. The CEO of the company has been awarded with Champion of the Earth Award in the year 2015. Thus, award was given because of his efforts in reaching the goal of the organization towards green movement.
The increasing demands by regulatory agencies, customers as well as society have an important role for betterment of environmental management as well as enterprises. They have been dictating time as well as resources in order to protect environment as well as implementation of distinctive strategies that helps mitigating the impact of IT operations so that consumption of energy as well as waste production can be decreased (Deng and Ji 2015). Through emphasizing on central part of the framework, it is important to develop the process that assists to manage the things that is helpful for the organization to develop the process (Jainudin et al. 2017). On the other hand, the enterprises can manage the process. The green IT practices into the enterprises analyzes the issues as well as conditions and consequences in different groups as well as levels that are presented.
The important scientific as well as technological development has occurred that the connection between economic as well as ecology. Thus, the definition of lines as well as conception is contributed to the widespread status across the world. The organizations including environmental practices in the strategies as well as daily operations have been developed (Thomas et al. 2016). The organizations have aim to minimize consumption of energy as well as emissions of carbon footprints. On the other hand, it for green approach has an important role that has at minimizing energy consumption. On the other hand, green IT can be a defined concept for accepted practices (Rozar et al. 2015). On the other hand, a holistic approaches as well as environmental impact of the organizations. Hence, support for environmental sustainable practices need to be carried out in the organizations. In the perspective of socio-technological issues, it is important to minimize environmental impact as well as highlighting strategies that has sustainable development and economic thinking. It is important to point out that negative impact of IT need to focus on the perspective and achieve other activities in the enterprise.
