As per Raju Mudhar, Toronto Star- Entertainment has become an all-you can eat buffet due to the Netflix effect. Binge watching is the new trend in the current generation where they are involved in watching their favorite shows in one go. On-demand screening channels like Netflix release entire season of an original show and causes video-on-demand stampede. A huge percentage of Netflix subscribers watched all back to back episodes in a day. When all the episodes are released simultaneously it causes a nation-wide marathon especially among the younger viewing section (McDonald and Smith-Rowsey 2016, p. 30). This report examines the both positive and negative behavioral patterns of adolescents. In popular context Binge viewing and Netflix has become popular among young generation. Both Generation X and Generation Y exhibit significant viewing patterns. They are practicing new television viewing style with a variety of digital tools. As per the research made by PWC sixty three percent of the households in the United States are using video streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime etc. These changing patterns are exactly seen in the young generation. With a long-tail stock of TV shows and a commercial free viewing. Netflix is currently changing viewer’s expectations and providing them with a new genre of watching TV shows (Davis 2016, p. 7). The current technology shift has a widespread impact on the television program production decisions, advertisement, distribution deal and etc. It has a disruptive effect on the traditional viewing practices. The Netflix effect causes a weeklong impact on a season viewing pattern. Video on demand allows an individual to become a part of the cultural conversation. The conversational exchanges among the young viewers will allow them to see their favorite seasons online.
It is important to consider both the affordance and constraints of TV binge on the young generation. When it comes to television platforms the new generation is becoming used to the new technology. The young generation is ready to pay extra for subscription but want to watch their favorite shows without any hindrance. The negative implications related to this type of consumption are concerned with the moral panics about the young population. It has a negative impact on the young people as they are getting more used to violence, fictional melodrama, sex etc. they are becoming a victim to the technology and becoming a couch potato causing health risk. For an adult instead of spending their evening in an activity, they are spending most of the time in watching these shows. The report provides an insight into the impact of viewing the on-demand show on the young generation (Trouleau, Ashkan, Ding and Eriksson 2016, p. 1217).
The growing number of adult gamers created an era where the young audience is exposed to the various media tools like on demand streaming services like Netflix. These new technologies have a long lasting impact on the viewers behaving pattern. The fast moving social media is causing a medical-ization of the society causing unrest among the young generation. The young generation is getting more exposed to the violence. There are certain unintended effects of the media effects on the individual. Most importantly there is an increasing gap between the societies due to media. One of the key impacts is creating a long lasting impact on the health of the individual (Cook 2016, p 10). They are spending most of their time in watching their favorite shows causing difficulty in managing health. Binge watching has become a new trend in the society where the young population is deviating towards different viewing patterns. There is a consistent competition among the peer regarding who has watched how many episodes. This continuous marathon is creating disparities in accepting. The shows are been watched without any break causing a difference in the viewing pattern. Technological advancement has been a matter of concern in case where the young generation is more inclined towards the watching pattern. The primary focus is to understand both the positive as well as negative impact of technology and how one can reduce all the ill-impacts in order to understand the changing pattern in technology (Pierce-Grove 2016, p 22(1)).
This new culture has given birth to the fragmented viewing pattern. The young generation viewing pattern is moving away from the traditional broadcasting technology. A business model and the sustainable content has become a matter of great impact. The on-demand binge channels led an impact on the DVD business. The online revenues are uncertain hence causing a difference in feeding the audience in an appropriate way. This has substantially affected the overall revenue that is earned through the offline methods (Wheeler 2015, p. 8).
As per the research the Audiences have for all time wanted to interfere in the arbitrated cultural flow. This cultural flow has led to a gap in communication technologies. The current media environment is a shift from the symbol of surge to the structure of records. This flow is still unknown as per the current scenario. The young generation is ready to re-inscribe into this structure of records and arbitrated life with the help of networked individual. This system has co-constructively assembled and communicated digital flow. Today’s generation is in the midst of the re-calibration connecting viewers and industry. The flow is increasing creating a channeled through the network individual (Wagner 2016, p. 2). The coming out of new distribution channels and new modes of distribution is a challenge for the current social practice and norms. As a medium of technology this has resulted in a new-technology support on Bit Torrent and file-sharing of content through Information and technology. Union of different technology pattern has refurbished television’s place in the ‘popular imagination’ in the current global competitive scenario. All this has allowed a change in the distribution pattern. Streaming does not require any type of information regarding the technology. It completely depends on the way in which the information attained is used by the people. It is important according to the current scenario that focuses particularly on the behavioral pattern (Steele, James, Burrows, Mantell, and Bromham 2015, p. 3(1)). The huge gap in meeting the disparities has become a tool that is been used to meet the requirement at every place. All this has shifted the focus of the audience in a significant way. Moreover the pattern is changing influencing the current scenario (Snyder 2016, p. 5).
Different scholar does have a different view regarding the digital information. Few consider it as advantageous due to networkable, compressible, dense, and manipulable nature. The importance of Networkable has improved due to a change in the pattern where it has become easy to distribute through a network simultaneously without compiling the data. Compression is the procedure of dropping idleness or “noise” of information. This actually diminishes the quantity of bandwidth desirable to launch. The data flow in an appropriate way in packets of irregular networked infrastructure. The Density is defined as an amount of information that is stored in a given space. It is strange to understand that how a Smartphone can carry so much of information in the form of compressed storage capacity (Chapman et al 2014, p. 9(7)). Streaming as a technical procedure is only possible when the data is allowed to compress and to decompress. The buffer timing is to simultaneously being consumed in order to reduce the waiting time. The Digital information is a considerably changeable and flexible form which comprises of uniting things like sound and text. This allows the users to be flexible and manipulable while consuming the data in an effective way (Winland 2015, p. 2). Streaming lays in-between oral and literate reference not depending upon an individual mode of delivery itself. These possessions and individuality of digital media has helped in differentiating digital streaming media from analog media. Another positive point is related to additional affordances of digital media. This has allowed the users to stream the data as per their convenience. The digital media is completely automated allow in easy transmission of information. The overall impact of binge watching in young generation is gaining importance. It is due to the fact that nowadays people are more considerate about the activities that provide them with maximum mental peace (Owen 2017). Computerization in digital media allows in easy flow of information without any human intervention. This is due to the fact that these binge channels are acting as a supportive system for gaining long term knowledge. The Netflix recommendation system provides with mechanical filters by using inputs that generates suggestions that strengthen flow within streaming (Pittman and Sheehan 2015, 20(10)). This directly connects an individual with adaptive agents that can be modified automatically. This has produced throughout software and programs without any human intervention. The technological affordance of digital data is important to manage the information saved. The data stored can be filtered and used that consumer can do in a meaningful way. Streaming creates this procedure of recovery emerge consequently faultless so as to manage towards possession of content. The momentum, ubiquity, and aptitude allows in retrieving the data in a seamless way. The flow of information from ubiquitous automatic databases goes away from the materiality (Gomillion, Gabriel Kawakami and Young 2016 p. 5). This continuous marathon is creating disparities in accepting. The shows are been watched without any break causing a difference in the viewing pattern. In case of the use of the on-demand streaming services the pattern are very flexible. Nobody is able to predict the future patterns due to flexibility. Viewing few episodes in a row causes a disruption in the viewing behavior. Instead of watching one can use that time in doing something creative it is due to the fact that the viewing patterns are changing at a fast pace causing disparities in gaining information. May be in future there will be different viewing pattern. These viewing patterns are caused due to change in technology. It is thus important to analyze the current viewing pattern to make an inference about the future viewing patter. One can easily see a change from the last decade. The adaptability of technology and various other components are subject to change (Pena 2015).
The “Internet revolution,” builds an effective social networking uprising and provides people with more communication authority. The internet technology therefore helps in gathering information in a significant way as per the individual needs. Only relation seen between the contact point and media industries is removed wholly from the household. The various workgroup focuses on the individual network (Jenner 2015). The mobile revolution sets to be as primarily technological tool provides a portable access to friends and information at determination. This allows the possibility of a “constant occurrence and enveloping consciousness in the network as physical division by time and space. The overall purpose is to manage the discourse through empowerment and acknowledgement by a linear progression from community to a Networked individual Streaming media and technology allows an individual to focus on community other than quite provisional alliance of networked individuals that are engaged with diverse media industry re-articulations of flow. The Streaming media has become a revolution by channelizing the potential of the network through space for this increasing re-articulation of industry.
The young generation is becoming more dependent on the online services that are causing difficulty in viewing pattern. The recent revolution in binge watching has created a challenge for the TV shows (Fulkerson et al 2004, p. 870). Instead of waiting eagerly for each episode now the generation is more conveniently using the Netflix and other on-demand online channels to watch favorite shows. This is however creating an opportunity to view their favorite show with convenience. The newer mode of watching shows has revolutionized the overall pattern. A significant shift in the viewing pattern is seemed to be convenient not only for the young as well as middle aged generation. It is completely based on the convenience. Through these on-demand channels one can easily watch the favorite shows without waiting them to be broadcasted over television. This is just a part of change in the pattern of watching television however it is important from the point of view of watching the favorite shows for which an individual has been waiting from a long time. Both Generation X and Generation Y exhibit significant viewing patterns. They are practicing new television viewing style with a variety of digital tools (Cook 2014).
Binge watching often causes pretty isolating activity. A study shows that most of the bingers like to watch the show alone. They do not require any company to watch their favorite shows. This often describes a character of isolation and motivates an individual to skip group outing etc. At an initial level the new TV show is exiting for the individual later he finds difficulty in managing consistency. In such an n unpredictable atmosphere it has become a common activity. The excitement breaks after sometime due to difference in the approach leading to decrease in excitement. Binge watching decreases viewing pleasure. An individual do not het time to forget what he has been seeing on the television leading to monotony (Moore 2015). Binge watching is sometimes immersive and causes an escape from the reality. An individual feels disconnected from the world causing a change in his social behavior pattern. Viewing few episodes in a row causes a disruption in the viewing behavior. Instead of watching one can use that time in doing something creative. If an individual do not have something to do then one can sit and see all the episodes of own I Met Your Mother, The Good Wife, and Lost etc. Most of the time of an individual is consumed in watching the series. As an alternative of waiting keenly for each episode now the generation is more conveniently using the Netflix and other on-demand online channels to watch favorite shows. This is however creating an opportunity to view their favorite show with convenience. One needs to understand both the positive and negative impacts of binge watching. This has become a new trend involving attention of every individual. In a short time period one has developed an effective process to deviate time in meeting the needs pertaining to watching shows over the on-demand channels. The flow of information from ubiquitous automatic databases goes away from the materiality. This continuous marathon is creating disparities in accepting (Crisp 2015, p. 74).
There has been a significant space in the needs to overcome the gap between the traditional and new technique. There is a hope of horizon to meet the needs pertaining to an improvement in the quality. It is due to the changing behavior of the individual that the dependency on the newer channels is increasing creating a higher potential for the newer technology. There is a decline in the traditional form of watching television series. The main reason behind it is due to change in meeting the regular needs regarding information and technology. All media devices were once new for the audience. Looking for the changes in the current viewing format is seen as an era of change in improving the way of viewing TV. Favorite shows are now available in an easy way causing an improvement in the technology. It is due this fact that the overall process has been improving at a fast pace creating changes in viewer’s pattern. It is important to consider both the affordance and constraints of TV binge on the young generation (Victor 2016).
An easy accessibility can lead to over consumption. On video on-demand (VOD) services is considered as “binge watching” which is affecting individual watching behavior largely. The binging behavior has lead to various challenges where an individual behavioral pattern is given preference in matching with the consumption habit. It is necessary to predict the behavioral pattern where an individual is busy in watching the shows without any disturbances. The binge watchers do not follow a particular pattern. They are however considering watching the whole episode without any further delay. The on-demand viewers are highly addictive to what they are seeing. They are keen to finish the season in one go. Most of the media bodies now know that what audience is actually looking for. If they are interested in watching binge it should strive to show them in binge. It is just to seek their attention to gain long term sustainability. Binge watching is often correlated with the depression, loneliness etc. One often watches these show as he is alone. The behavioral patterns of viewers are addictive in nature. The change in the viewing pattern is affecting the individual largely causing a gap in gasping information (Karmakar and Kruger 2016). The overall change in the watching behavior has created a gap in gaining information in a significant way. Binge watching often causes restlessness of mind. It can be seen that the individuals are highly affected due to binge watching. The recent survey conducted on behalf of Netflix states the above mentioned facts. It defined the binge viewing amid two to six episodes of a show in one sitting (Patel 2015). The changing behavioral patterns are harmful for the young generation. There are certain unintended effects of the media effects on the individual. It is however important for every individual to manage the activities in an effective way by handling it properly. A large proportion of the society is affected by the binge watching and it has become a matter of great concern. People are more considerate regarding watching these shows (Stone 2017).
The recent trend in the on-demand viewing is affecting the overall pattern causing a change in the viewing patter. It is due to the rising change in the society and the individual behavior it is possible to arrange the activities in an effective way by understanding the behavior. Most importantly this changing pattern has been contributing in achieving success. There is a consistent competition among the peer regarding who has watched how many episodes. This continuous marathon is creating disparities in accepting. Netflix is saving a lot of time of the audience and the picture quality they are giving is mark worthy. The purpose of the study is to gain importance according to the current scenario by involving more audience into the activity (Sternberg 2016).
The ‘New’ media technology is a noteworthy part for the whole generation in meeting the necessary goals. This particularly condition put forward the condition of any intermediate in managing the activities in an appropriate way. The old technologies have undergone a significant social and cultural procedure of alteration. This industries and authoritarian arrangement modified as per the technological innovations. All media devices were once new for the audience. The primary goal is to map out a number of the antecedent of streaming media to construct an additional robust considerate network (Sternberg 2016). In such a competitive scenario where audience cannot wait for the next season Netflix has arrived as a healer for those who are obsessed with watching shows continuously. It is due to the reason that the sudden upheaval in the technology and changing demographic pattern accompanied in changing viewing pattern. This is necessarily a breakthrough in the watching behavior of their young generation compete ting against each other for their favorite shows (Morris 2016). A study shows that 61 percent of TV streamers frequently connect in binge watching. The recent survey conducted on behalf of Netflix states the above mentioned facts. It defined the binge viewing amid two to six episodes of a show in one sitting. It was further founded that a bulk section had positive feelings about their level of consumption. As per the experts binge-watching is not a healthy habit for both brain and body. The study shows that the Adults who watch more than three hours of TV a day has more chances of premature death contrasting to those who watched less. The report found researchers in a new study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association has published the reasons behind the health issues. Sitting for long hours increases the risk of health issues including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. The studies show that for managing make supporting, stretching, and captivating mini breaks (Landa 2015).
Whereas binge-viewing is fun and experience pleasing ways has caused danger of flattering. The passionate addictions engage young generation in an unproductive activity. In case if one intend to watch only three episodes of a show he end up watching six. This reason has caused a problem in overdoing it. The performance of an individual has affected addictive behavior in an individual (Hiller 2016). The negative impact of Netflix has a long term impact on the health. It is often recommends that one need breaks connecting episode plus not snacking while watching. This can lead to mindless overeating. One of the key impacts is creating a long lasting impact on the health of the individual. They are spending most of their time in watching their favorite shows causing difficulty in managing health. It is generally seen that one requires an effective use of binge watching in order to meet the requisite needs (Schlomo 2016).
Conclusion:
The revolution in the watching behavior has significantly impacted the whole industry. The changes and the impact can be seen in the current generation. The changes in the behavioral pattern and binge watching have both positive and negative impact. . These changing patterns are exactly seen in the young generation. With a long-tail stock of TV shows and a commercial free viewing. The young generation is the one impacted by the effects of the binge watching.
