Emotion is a strong feeling derived from a situation, mood, relationship, and attachment with the environment or the belongings in the surrounding of an individual. The feeling is present in every individual but the method of expressing it is different for different person. The study will discuss about the emotion management of a leader in the defence force. The post of the person is Senior NCO. In general any person belonging to a leadership post has to maintain a serious and dignifies role to keep a hold over the sub-ordinates (Goleman, Boyatzis & McKee, 2013).
The study will conduct the discussion on the behaviour and emotion management of this particular role and will emphasis on the behaviour maintained by the post with the sub-ordinates. There are various types of leadership but the leadership by a NCO in defence system is completely dependent on strict maintenance of personality and attitude. The thesis will deal with the Senior NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer) of Irish defence force. The defence system already has a severe restriction for self-maintenance and personality management among themselves. The role of a leader has to be very balanced and strict to maintain harmony and well management among the subordinates.
The term first appeared in the paper of EI. Goleman which is now considered as mixed model. It was defined as an array of skills and features that drives the performance of a leader. It consists behavioural dispositions and self-achieved abilities that is measured through self-report. It is basically a capability of any individual to understand and identify their own emotions and also others emotion and recognize them as different feeling and label them accordingly (Hutchinson & Hurley, 2013). It is shown in studies that people with high EI has greater mental state or health, leadership skills, performs better in the work place. In general terms it is defined as an ability to monitor one’s own and others emotions, identify the difference between the different types of emotions and label them accordingly (Siegling,Nielsen & Petrides, 2014).
Emotional intelligence is an important skill in every leadership. It states that if an individual is well aware of the situation that they are going through then they will understand better the same situation for anyone else. However the study will try to show how the military force uses the skills to uplift their maintenance system and create a better working environment (Ramchunder & Martins, 2014). It is very important for a military leader to understand the emotional situation of any other person in the team or group and handle that with total sincerity. This is only possible if the Officer has a good hold on the EI of that individual. It will include motivation, empathy, social skills that will help the subordinates and the other workers to achieve the desired target of the organization.
It can be said that a NCO leader who does not have the power to manage their emotion they can face a havoc in their leadership role. Emotional intelligence is highly influenced by personal qualities like perseverance, self-control, emotion management, skill of adjusting and getting along with others(Bartone, Kelly & Matthews, 2013). There are five components that rule the emotion intelligence in every individual. The NCO leaders form the backbone of the armed services. They are considered as the primary link between the commissioned officers and enlisted personnel. However, if the military leaders is unable to create a proper image in front of the subordinates then the entire management system will be hanpered.
The leaders who are having low emotional intelligence has a tendency to consider every ones emotions and sacrifice the work according to others emotional values, thus creating and inefficient work environment. The work motivation is reduced to emotional attachment and priority. This creates an unprofessional and inefficient work place. If the leaders is following such strategy then it is normal that the sub-ordinates will also do the same. This will make the defence force less efficient and demotivate them from their individual role. A leaders should always be strong and maintain a dignity by themselves. If the leaders are unable to identify their emotion properly and handle them will sincerity then it is very obvious that the subordinates will also take advantage of that situation. The emotional intelligent leaders knows how to practise self-respect. If a leader is not respecting themselves then the subordinates might take advantage of the situation.
The Irish defence force has a strict restriction for their rules and regulations. In the defence force the President is the Supreme Commander. The state has a long standing policy of neutrality and non-belligerence in armed conflicts (Horowitz & Stam, 2014). The military capabilities are relatively modest. The leader has to be stricter and maintain a strong personality in front of the sub-ordinates. Thus the leaders has to maintain a strict personality and dignity in front of the subordinates (Coetzee & Harry, 2014). The thesis will examine the leader in the Emotional Intelligence field and identify whether the present models are related to the Defence framework.
The thesis has a primary object of getting a better understanding of the EI in the leadership role and how it has helped the leaders to create a better organization environment. The importance of this study is to make a clear understanding of this concept and get a better idea about its important in the Defence Force (García-Sancho, Salguero & Fernández-Berrocal, 2014). The study focuses on the importance of the role of the leaders in an organization and how it motivates the sub-ordinates to work accordingly. The study has direct reference to the leadership of a high ranking military officer and how their role and behaviour has an impact in their work life and influence over their subordinates. The solution of the research will be explored through proper understanding of EI in individual life and how it enhances the skills in defence force along with interviews, NCO leadership trainings, and leadership concepts. It typically aims to create a better understanding of the role in the military force and how it can be beneficial to the entire organization. The study will focus to create a better working in the organization with proper usage of EI and thus helping the leaders to understand the importance of EI (Murphy, 2014). The study will typically target to utilize the EI quality to make a sustainable utilization of emotion management and EI in the workplace to create a better environment.
The aim of the study is to identify and understand the importance of EI in leadership of Irish defence force and create a better understanding of EI and how it helps the organization.
The objectives of the study are:
Research questions:
The thesis is structured into five sections or chapters. The second chapter gives the literature review about leadership, its implication in work life, EI. It will give a clear understanding of the entire theory about EI and paying attention to the factors of leadership development. The third section will give an idea about the methodology used in the study. The fourth section will describe about the findings from the information and data collected through interviews and focus groups. The fifth section will give a brief summary of the research topic and will give conclusions and recommendations that will help the defence force in the future. This section actually gives findings about the research and gives the result that can be implemented in the required area for the betterment and development of that particular area. The same will happen for this study, the conclusion and recommendations will help the Defence Force to implement the strategies in their leadership skills thus improving the leadership condition and management system.
The limitation of the study is that it is a very uncommon topic that has very less discussion in the general life. The study has very less research work or writings on this topic. During the research work the availability of the journals and articles will be very less. It will be really difficult to search for the experiences of the military men as they will not have time to give direct interviews. The study will be completely based on the records and journals that has the statements of the military men from the past. It will be difficult to understand if the present feelings and thinking of the military men has changed or is same. The study will be only about the emotional intelligence maintained by the people in the defence force. It will not include that how the people holding this post should implement the strategy of emotional intelligence in their daily life. The study will be limited only with the maintenance and not about the self grooming of the officers who should abide by this behaviour to maintain a hold in the group and manage the subordinates accordingly Thus, the study will be difficult to conduct as their will be very less co-operation from the defence force as they will have very less time for interview and feedback and secondly the study is only about the maintenance and not grooming of thsi quality in the officers.
