In the article “We’re Only Human and None of Us Are Made to Run like Machines” Patricia Dalton , a psychologist in Washington , contends how mental illnesses are caused by improper use of technology and overwork, and how technology is changing the way people live. Even though this radical change has been beneficial in a variety of ways, it has had quite a detrimental effect on life in many different ways, showing how this change is more of an inevitability than a choice.
According to Dalton, this damaging impact can mostly be seen in human bodies ‘ fundamental biological functions. Dalton’s lack of technology facts and their beneficial impact, on the one hand, had diminished the argument. On the other hand, Dalton demonstrated strength in the use of logos, in the gradual transition, in the simple and clear and understandable syntax, and in the essay’s layout and organization.
The author Patricia Dalton has some knowledge and experience in a few areas, mainly with regard to clinical psychology, as it is her major.
Dalton studied at Dayton University and Catholic University, where she received her B. A. as well as PhD from these universities in theology. Adding to that her twenty years experience with psychology. Overall, Dalton’s article regarding Mental Health is legible due to her academic knowledge in that field; she’s patently well informed about mental health issues and the psychological terms surrounding it.
To begin with, there was a noticeable weakness in Dalton’s reasoning that could make the audience question the integrity of the writer, which is the dearth of use of technology facts and their long term effects.
Moreover, this lack of facts does not help support the argument of Dalton, which ultimately leads to Dalton’s writing appearing less plausible. However, Dalton shows how credible the reasoning is by using by rhetorical appeals, such as ethos by saying, “I’m well aware of the argument that these rates must to be exaggerated, but as a clinical psychologist, there is no doubt in my mind in that there has been a real increase in the number in of mood and anxiety disorders during the 20-plus years that I have been in practice.” (Patricia, 2005, para. 1). As an experienced psychologist, Dalton states her argument with the most knowledge she has.
It was clear that Dalton’s tone was fretting about how the technology affects the workers and the direction to which they are heading.
Additionally, Dalton explores and informs people about the risks of overwork and how employed people are at risk of mental disorder, arguing that technology is a main factor. Besides, not spreading awareness of mental illnesses that can be provoked by technology and helping patients to cope with it or deter it, may increase the number of patients with anxiety disorder. Rather, spreading public awareness of mundane things like the relevance of sleep can lead to the gradual decrease of the negative effects of technology. Dalton also mentions how exhaustion affects people in sleep, appetite, and sex. In relation, Dalton provides some alternative suppositions by displaying the employees that they regulate their own lives, rather than being driven, to be the drivers of their lives in the modern age. “Are we destined to be the driven in our modern world , or can we become the drivers?” (Dalton, 2005)- Dalton asserts that the essay was not published to undermine technology, it was rather written to show that although technology is useful, it can be more advantageous if used properly.
Moreover, the selected layout of the article by Dalton, including the above-mentioned sequence of events, makes it possible to follow the points made as Dalton uses smooth transitions between paragraphs that precipitated it to flow eloquently and delicately switches between simple and sophisticated language. Furthermore, while the syntax used across the article is mostly straightforward and understandable-which is useful for reaching a broader audience-Dalton makes an effort to guarantee that the language is not excessively simplified in a manner that could undermine the audience. By doing so, Dalton recognizes that the the intellect of the audience in her effort to educate the audience on the the the subject, their intellect in their attempt to educate the audience on the the subject, compliments the reader, and thus they are more likely to accept the assertions of Dalton. Moreover, as far as the the structure of the article, Dalton commences by describing the events that cause mental illness, then Dalton went on to describe to all the points to support the claim that technology is is a prime reason why mental illnesses are now more prevalent than ever. But even so, Dalton strongly reinforces the point by stating that the workers are the responsible of controlling their lives by saying “Are we destined to be the driven in our modern world, or can we become the drivers? What we often forget is that we can make deliberate decisions to improve the quality of our lives.” (Patricia, 2005, para. 19). The organization of the article and statements is another crucial strength Dalton had. Dalton’s organization of the essay made it easier to present the arguments reasonably and seamlessly, without venturing off or perplexing the reader, while at the same the time affirming her viewpoint by opening and closing the article with her statement, making her argument more poignant and therefore more persuading for the audience.
