Discuss about the Innovation in Globally Distributed Teams.
The success of any type of organisation lies on the hand of a teamwork between the co-workers. Acting as a team in a work place needs different types of ingredients. This essay discusses about the essential factors responsible for a success by the use of teamwork along with discussing about the effectiveness of a team, the performance of a team, the communication that works between the team members. The essay also contains the liking of the teamwork with the ethics. Teamwork is essential in an organisation for the purpose of achieving success or to meet a certain objective. Teamwork aims at compiling the various ideas of the people present in the team (Ricca 2012). According to one of the author named Jon Katzenbach “a team is a small number of people having complementary skills are committed for the purpose of attaining a certain purpose, or a set of goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable”. Teamwork is essential for anytime of organisation so as to face the challenging business environments. According to another author named Alcorn teamwork can be defined as “work done by several associates, with each doing a part but all subordinating personal prominence to the efficiency of the whole”. The team manager makes use of the different skills and the talents of the different members of the group so as to attain success in a project (Dyer and Dyer 2013). There are various types of conflicts in a team like the conflict in the project, conflicts in the relation between the team members and the conflicts in the values of the team members.
Team work basically refers to the dedication of a group of people working together to perform a certain work by application of different concepts and ideas of different people in a group. The team or a group of are galvanised together for attaining success in certain work. Teamwork is basically aimed at attaining success by bringing out the best from each individual. In a team different members have different complimentary skills and they are aimed at attaining a certain objective. By teamwork the performance is more enhanced than individual performance (Riener and Wiederhold 2012). There are many type of tasks in which an individual cannot attain success but by working as a team on that same task can be much more easy and the probability of success for that work also increases. Teamwork requires good leadership and use of the skills and ideas of different group members. Every individual in a team should be helpful to the other members of the team. The accomplishment of a work is much faster and efficient by working as a team rather than working individually. By working together, the workload of every employee or the members of the group decreases if they share the responsibilities and the ideas amongst themselves. There are many types of conflicts that can rise between the team members like disagreement on a certain idea. Conflicts can be good for a team as healthy debates between the members of the group leads to development of respect for the thoughts and the ideas of different group members (West 2012). Each member in a group are assigned with different tasks thereby reducing the workload of individual group members. The tasks are assigned to the group members according to their specialisation. The managers of the team should look into the matter if the group members are interested in the project or not as the interest of the members plays a vital role in deciding the efficiency or speed of the output responsible for the completion of a certain project. Every member of a group can learn from the other member as all the members in a group have different skills and capabilities. This skills and knowledge’s can be used by a member for the purpose of advancing their knowledge. A good team indicates the presence of cooperation amongst the team members. By cooperating in a project the new members of the team can always learn from the old or an experienced member of the team. By working together each individual in a team has an opportunity to acquire the skills of the other employees (Galegher Kraut and Egido 2014). In a team the members can challenge the ideas of one another ultimately which will lead to a compromised solution that can prove to be beneficial and a leading contribution for the successful completion of the project. By arguing on a certain topic the members reach a conclusion that consists of ideas of all members in a team. By this the team can also avoid the mistakes and by avoiding mistakes the team can retain its reputation or can increase the reputation. With increased knowledge the members of the team become more confident towards their work, along with improved attitude and job satisfaction (Farh Seo and Tesluk 2012).
Communication should exist between all the members of a group irrespective of the role that they play in a team. One of the vital reasons which leads to the success of a team is that there should always remain a good communication link between each members of a team. There should always remain a relation of trust amongst the members of a group. Every individual in a team must take an initiative for developing trust amongst themselves (Nancarrow 2012). The team members should interact with each other more openly rather then what they would have done in everyday life. Honesty is an important factor which should remain at all ends of a team. This is an important factor as hiding of the truth plays a vital role in damaging the integrity of the team. By sharing of the feelings and information’s amongst themselves the team members can develop a very good relation of trust. Communication is a very important factor responsible for the success of the project. Many studies show that people working as a group can achieve success more easily then working individually but, if there is no communication among the members of the group then it is almost similar to working individually (Belbin 2012). For example, a group of three members working on a project without any communication can be seen as useless as if the project was not touched at all. Better communication in a team leads to completion of a project more quickly. With better communication the team members become more efficient and accurate in their work. Effective communication helps in understanding the roles and responsibilities of each team member. Besides all this communication provides a room for understanding amongst the team members (Bens 2017). Lack of communication can lead to wastage of time and energy in doing busy works a works that are not required. This happens as the team members are not able to understand the need of doing those works that are to be done. Lack of communication can also lead to misunderstanding amongst the team member which often leads to conflicts and lack of trust among the group members. With increased communication the team members feel more motivated and they feel more fresh and motivated towards the work (Shockley-Zalabak 2014). The communication can be increased by various ways like organising regular meetings among the group members where every member is allowed to present their views, by including every members of the group in a project, discussions should be clear and concise, showing respect to each members of the group, talking according to the situation and many more (Gajendran and Joshi 2012).
Ethical communication in a team refers to the moral aspects of the interactions in a team. Communication ethics in a team states that a behaviour of an individual of a team or the total team is governed by the morals that initially effects the communication. Organisations having ethical communications amongst its members are more effective than any other organisation who are having an unethical communication practice (Hsu 2012). Therefore, we can state that teams having ethical communication practice are more effective and are more successful leading their organisations a step ahead in the ladder of success. Communication ethics is a part of the National Communication Association or NCA and Some of the principles according to NCA that are present in team communication are:
By looking into the principles of the ethical communication we can conclude that there are two type of theme for ethical communication in a team. Some of the principles are obvious whereas some of them are not as obvious in representing the themes of ethical communication. Talking about ethics is much more easy than applying it in the team (Tenzer Pudelko and Harzing 2014). Effective critical thinking skills, recognising the diversity in the perspective and understanding their importance, respecting the well-being of an individual and other members of a team, taking the responsibility individually and the actions of the team and finally the reflection of the choices of the team that the team makes are the essential requirements of ethical communication. Avoidance of making fun of other team mates also falls under the ethical behaviour. One should not spread negative image or rumours about any other member of the team (Wickramasinghe and Widyaratne 2012). Ethical communication is an essential need for all teams. This type of communication helps a lot in building a relation of trust amongst the group members along with boosting up the team performance.
The contribution of teamwork plays a vital role in the success of an organisation. Teamwork helps in bringing the employees of an organisation much closer. The solving of problems, creation of new ideas, different methods of motivation, sharing of different prospective of different individuals in a team has been greatly increased by teamwork’s which initially leads to the success of an organisation.
Building up of a proper team is very much complex and faces a lot of difficulties during the process of formation. For the formation of a proper and an efficient team there is need of proper communication. Proper communication not only helps in making a proper team but also helps in extracting out the best performance from the team members. Proper understanding should exist between each team members and it’s the duty of individual team member to understand what their fellow team mates are up to. Every team member should be made clear of their roles they are going to play and should also know their responsibilities. Different methods of communication should be used instead of only using verbal communication to avoid misunderstandings and confusions. Every member of the team should be allowed to speak freely. Ethical and effective communication helps a lot in avoiding conflicts and fights among the members of the team.
