Kenya through the national government and in association with the county government should bring about development programmes in the Arid and semi arid Lands (ASALs) eg in Turkana and Marsabit among others. This developments can be in the form of improvement of existing water point areas, placing measures that encourage the reuse of waste water, coming up with modern methods of soil conservation to prevent soil erosion and diversifying cultivation such as investing in drought tolerant crops eg water melons.
The government through parliament and other environmental bodies eg NEMA can pass laws concerning the establishment and rehabilitation of riparian lands.
This is to prevent unauthorized encroachment of such which if violated can lead to catastrophic events eg floods.
The government through the relevant ministries can invest in research and development on possible catastrophic temperature behaviors. This will provide an avenue of professionalism and qualitative way of combating climate change.
The government can also improve the retention capacity landscape eg by enlarging dams and deepening river beds and indulging in reforestation techniques in water catchment areas.
This will help in reducing floods and droughts occurrences in a natural friendly manner.
The government can also invest in training and research in the health sector in order to improve in climate sensitive disease surveillance and control. A good example is the outbreak and control of Chikungunya in the coastal strip.
Residents who live along the coastal strip can engage in mangrove replantation in order to retain ocean coastlines. The mangrove act as an important ingredient in combating climate change since they have a complicated root system to cope with salt water immersions and wave action.
The government can also reduce the dependence of a single source of energy. For instance the main source of Kenya’s energy is water through hydroelectric power. In cases of adverse drought conditions the country will be adversely affected if no alternative sources of energy are invested into.
In the spirit of urban and infrastructural development the government can also adopt modern building codes to future climate conditions and extreme weather conditions. A good example is the constructing buildings with flexible metal structures that can withstand natural occurrences such as earth quakes which to some extent are as a result of climate change.
In conclusion all these adaptations are meant to help Kenya to prepare and prevent natural catastrophes such as droughts and floods that are as a result of climate changes.
